Phil Jones | Exit Speculation

I've said it already months ago that Jones shouldn't be a Manchester United player next season and i still think that.........he's too injury-prone and let's be honest he hasn't improved much since we've signed him.

New signing or Tuanzebe for Jones.

Actually as an act of desperation since all his bids are getting turned down I can see Wenger go for Jones, sort of like he did with Welbeck.

The reactions will be hilarious.

£16m

Starts well, United fans cry

Out for season with knee injury in October

Shit people are daft.

Playing time = development/improvement
Enough playing time = eventual peak

Injuries curtail playing time. Thus curtails development, improvement and as a given delays/postpones and limits a peak.

Jones was, and is, a hugely talented defender. If he has 24 months of injury free football he will be the best defender in the country. He has every single attribute that you want in a defender.

I want him to stay under our employ. I'd love him to get a great loan and stay healthy because we'd have a stunning footballer on our hands. Sell him in a year if he (still) can't stay fit.

That's the sort of hyperbole I'd expect to read on RAWK about one of their young defenders. It's so ridiculously over the top.

Also when will people stop saying "If he stays fit" ? It's been said for years now. Let go of the fantasy and get back to reality; he'll never stay fit!

Young defenders can be unpredictable. I’ve lost count of how many new Maldinis, Italy have had. Some of which turned out to be quite good while others were simply dire (ex Coco). Injuries tend to add a layer of complexity to the issue. So many top quality young defenders have seen their career hindered or even ruined by injuries, Wes Brown, Santon, the Twins, the list go on and on.

Jones is currently fit and yet he’s our 5th choice behind Smalling, Bailly, Blind (whose a midfielder) and Rojo. That put this ‘hugely talented’ thing to bed. Can he turn things around? Of course he can. David Platt was told that he doesn’t have any future in football and he ended up captaining England and playing for Juventus and Arsenal. SAF preferred Evans to Pique, one is playing for West Brom, the other one is playing for Barcelona.

Stating that, this ‘miracle' won’t occur if the manager doesn’t believe in him. If Mou doesn’t want him here then it’s pointless keeping him here and considering Jones injury record I can’t really blame him for letting him go.

Yup, they are.

That's what people were saying a few years ago for England!

Won't happen in a million years but I'd take a chance.
SOLD !! £30M to you sir, cheap at twice the price. Actually that's probably about how much United have spent on medical bills in his time at OT...

Fergie: Jones can become Utd's greatest ever

http://en.espn.co.uk/football/sport/story/203772.html

Now I'm not just slagging off Fergie for this because I'm snobby we've got José now but he did drop a few massive clangers in his final few years with us (this, Pogba, the Gilbrator horse drama)

doesn't take away his massive contribution he did for us, he done far more good then the few mistakes but the mistakes became more frequent near the end for me.

Loan him to Arsenal for the season, he can get playing time there, prove himself and come back next season. Loaning to a rival can be risky, but as things stand I don't think many would call Arsenal a rival to win the league.

He had very good raw tools when he came to us. I'm not sure there was ever a top player there because I've never been convinced by his defensive acumen. Unlike Smalling, he just didn't look a natural born defender to me. However, when you think back to how he began - decent defending, decent on the ball and those ridiculous galloping runs into the opposition half - you'd have to say he should have at least been a pretty good player.

But last season was the last straw for me with regards to having any faith in him. After consistently missing nearly half a season nearly every season, he managed nearly the entire one. So I'm not fussed about his future. I'd personally rather bring in someone new but wouldnt be unduly bothered if he stayed. I do think we have a habit of hanging on to poor contributors for too long so this might be one such case to make amends.

He could do wonders at Arsenal rather then stinking the place up on the bench (if he even makes the bench there is defenders ahead of him there too)

For the lad himself it would be a good move. Arsene can teach him how to be a more cultured defender and not to be so risky (Wenger's pet project so to speak), he is a good enough defender to not have to resort to that. I doubt he will ever be world class but a Wes Brown type career is something to look back on with pride. Who can ever forget Wesley fecking Brown keeping Thierry Henry in his back pocket in a game at Highbury in 2004 (I think), pace for pace, stride for stride (he didn't get a sniff), or his season in the CL run in 2008 when Gary Neville's body broke down he stepped up.

I know that £30 million is the going rate for everyone nowadays but Phil Jones is a fixer-upper. It'd be like buying a really nice property which has been poorly looked after and needs a shit-load of work done.

£5 million tops.

Fergie wasn't a pundit you know? Anything he said was designed to have a positive effect on his players, not be some sort of accurate critical analysis.

Arsenal can feck off. I would quote them 30m for Jones or get fecked. Maybe they can play Debuchy as CB.

Loan him abroad. I'm sure an upper Spanish side would take him and playing in that environment would do him wonders

Which club told Platt he had no future in football? They must have been crazy.

Manchester United. The man who told him so was Eric Harrison, the genius behind most of the youths throughout Atkinson-SAF realm (from Hughes to Wes Brown) and whom, in my opinion, is the third most important person United had ever had.

Everyone can commit mistakes

Alright I'll forgive him for that. Did he have any input in the decision to banish Beardsley?

I may be alone in this opinion but i have never seen this lad play a game and i thought ''I'm glad we have him with us''. He just bundles into tackles and generally comes off worse. I think he was massively over hyped by SAF, maybe because he was one of his final flings in the transfer world and wanted to end with a statement - but the comparisons/ratings this lad has had are bonkers as far as I am concerned. He played 'well' for Blackburn but mainly as a CDM, we brought him in and played him as a CB/Full back, neither of which he is a worldy at.

He's from round here so I'm not one to knock a local lad, I'd hope he achieves whatever he wants to, but as a player he is massively over-rated and we should lose no sleep if he ventures elsewhere.

Nope

The Beardsley thing is still a mystery for me. I was a kid back then but he was one of my favourite non United players. Maybe the older guys can give us an idea what happened back then

I'll temper that a little as I meant he'd be the best defender for our country, as in English players only.

Jones is quick, good on the ball, great in the air, strong, can pass and tackles well. He has every attribute needed but hasn't progressed because he can't stay fit.

I wish we knew more about his injuries.. As a younger defender he always left a little too much on the pitch, and naturally that resulted in lots of niggly small injuries, but what happened last year?

I always think his qualities are obvious - huge experience of absolute top level football, physical, quick, good on the ball, english.. I know his fans (me included) keep bringing up his age, but he is only 24, and if he's happy here why not keep him? What's to lose? He surely MUST get fit and maintain fitness at some point! Young people have time - the fact he played such a big part in our teams at such a young age I think skews peoples opinion of him.

I think it would be such a shame to lose him.

He is a footballer who does not play football because he is either injured or returning from injury (and then gets injured again).
Why would it be a shame?

I agree with the overall sentiment of what you're saying, but feck me, he didn't need to go so OTT about Jones!

Cmon man, Jones had chance after chance, at some point we have to cut our losses and look for someone who is more reliable.

Well if we've got him in the shop window I don't think this photo on the United website will do him any favours.

He's English. He's still relatively young. He has many of the attributes needed to be a top quality centre back. I'd give him more time. Unless the medical staff don't think his body will allow him an injury free run.

Fabio Capello lavished praise on the teenager, claiming Jones reminded him of “Franco Baresi and Fernando Hierro”.

And Capello compared him to two of the best defenders you'll ever see.

Add in Wenger's love for the kid and you have three of greatest, most decorated football managers in history seeing something special in Jones. It almost like they think they know more about football than the Caf :wenger:
