Need to stay healthy to do well in the future though. Come on Jones find your fitness cure!

That's too many CBs though. Even if we do let Jones leave it still feels one too heavy.
It is. 5 designated CBs should be enough, I would advocate to have Tuanzabe in the squad nxt year in place of Darmian though. Let him have some minues at RB and if possible at his favored CB. See how he develops.

Great, let' settle for another mediocre season next year with c*ap CB's. Take Jones and Smalling out of your list and add another CB then we will be talking. Why would you advocate to keep Jones. Guy is either injured or making gaffs in games. He isnt even very good
Because of the fact that we cannot get a 5th CB any cheaper.
Because he is homegrown.
Because of continuity and that he is a popular member of the squad.
Because of the upside that he has if he stays injury free.
Its wrong to compare Jones to a new topclass CB, he should be compared to what we can have at 5th CB. The money in wages is needed at other places in the squad.

When his contract will expire? Or whatever he should be gone so soon. Him and few more never our standards.

Because of the fact that we cannot get a 5th CB any cheaper- Replace him with Tuanzebe or Fosu-Mensah in the squad
Because he is homegrown- Tuanzebe has that sorted
Because of continuity and that he is a popular member of the squad- Popularity in the squad doesn't win you titles or boost team morale from the sickbed or the bench, you're basically saying he's a highly paid cheerleader.
Because of the upside that he has if he stays injury free- How many times have people said this over the years? Jones fitness record is not going to magically improve with age. There's no upside to a 26 year old with an injury plagued career
Its wrong to compare Jones to a new topclass CB, he should be compared to what we can have at 5th CB. The money in wages is needed at other places in the squad- 5th, 6th or 7th you will always get the same result with Jones and will never get what you're paying for. His contribution doesn't measure up to the needs of a top club. Tuanzebe can comfortbaly take that position and be readily available when called upon.

1. Can do. Just bring back Tuanzebe in January.
2. Tuanzebe is.
3. Continuity of bad performances is not good continuity. I'm sure Tuanzebe would be well liked too, homegrown and young leader type. See no reason why not.
4. Ehm, if he stays injury free? He won't mate, he just won't sadly. I agree that he might be better for us than Rojo if he was kept injury free but he won't be so if we were to keep one of them it would be Rojo, reluctantly. Hence, why both need to leave.
5. Tuanzebe isn't a topclass CB at the moment, but he would certainly be a competent 4th choice CB, let alone 5th choice. If we get one CB then both Jones and Rojo becomes obsolete if we decide to involve Tuanzebe. If we get two CB's, then Smalling, Bailly, Lindelof, Tuanzebe might even be too much. There is literally no reason to keep Jones. I have nothing against Jones either, but I hope you come to your senses

That montage of Phil Jones OG's floating around is hilarious. How many has he had for United? Must be a record for a United player.

It's actually amazing how naturally it comes to him . He scored all types of own goals. Perhaps we should play him upfront instead of Lukaku?

Was going to say, if he could finish like that at the other end it would be a poachers paradise.

Some truly top class finishes in there

You must be on a WUM. You cannot be that stupid. Good to keep him because he is popular and good for continuity. Jesus Christ we are a football club who should be striving to win things. Having players like Jones, Valencia, Young, Darmian Rojo in the squad we will win absolutely nothing. He is not even good enough

Sometimes I wonder about this place. Calling people stupid and names for having the audacity to suggest that a 26-year old English international who has been at the clup for quite awhile now should remain in the squad next year? Grow the feck up and try to argue your point instead.
I stand by that we should keep Jones around next year.
The worst thing we can do is to get rid of too much experience at once. If Tuanzebe stays injury free and performs the rest of the season he deserves to be in the squad next year. Thats it for me though when it comes to promoting youngsters for next season. We already have Dalot who is finding his feet as well. Thats quite enough.
I really hope that we dont make the same mistake squad-wise as we did this year at CM: including two youngsters like McTominay and Pereira (young in experience from the PL at least) and then not play them. Its detrimental to their development and not good for the club either.
One had been enough this year at CM and give that player a serious chance instead.
Tuanzebe will need minutes next year and its logical that he gets those from a player like Jones if he shows that he is good enough.
When it comes to Jones, if he is happy to stay at the club and fight for his place, we will not get a cheaper alternative back in the line at CB. I rather shell out for one real top player as Koulibaly or Aldeweireld and let that be it for the defense next summer.
Rojo and Darmian to leave.
Serious investment is needed at CM and for me a new #9 to replace/compete with Lukaku. That will be expensive and I rather spend the money there.
This is whats call arguing your point. Try it.

He's up there with Anderson when it comes to wasters who have stole a living at this club.

All Jones does is waste wages and steals a spot in the senior squad that could be going to a youngster like Tuanzebe. He should have been sold years ago. Sorry @Johan07 but one of the reasons we're in the mess we are is because we keep around players for far too long. It's a shame he has so many injuries but we're supposed to be a top club, not a charity.

Keep him around for continuity? For feck sake.

We don't want continuity! The last 6 years have been dogshit.

We want and we need huge change, and getting rid of players like Jones who have been blatantly not good enough for years and years is a start of that needed change.

It staggers me we still have Utd fans who want to keep Jones. It's baffling.

The fact that almost everyone who read your post and also thought you were stupid speaks volumes for the standard and content of your post. If you want to push an argument for Jones to remain at the club as a 5th choice because he is popular and you like continuity at the club then it is no wonder with fans like you whilst we have accepted the s*ite we are currently being served up with week and week out.

Club needs a major shake up top to bottom. Manager, DOF half the playing squad needs to go, along with half of the fan base it seems

Shouldn't be anywhere near the squad yet alone the first team.

Yeh.. I wish there's a team stupid enough to buy this "A 26-year old English International" without us has to release him on free. And buy one, they'll also get "a 28-year old Argentinian International" as bonus.

This quote from Alan Shearer comes to mind. "everything is last-ditch with Phil Jones, if I was a centre forward playing against him I would be confident he would make at least one mistake." That says it all as a striker as good as Shearer knows he is probably going to score against him when he makes that mistake.

The biggest myth about him is being good when fit. Jones is a liability when fit and has shown it over and over. All that is happening is that the longer Jones is out of the team the more people forget his bad play. The cycle repeats itself. This guy should be binned for Tuanzebe who has shown enough to be a rotational option.

You are quite right in that respect. Although i can remember which game he clattered a player and hurt the player and himself in the process.

Jones did manage to injure himself and Smalling in training once. The lad must be a bit slow because he constantly gets injured in training, probably from doing those crazy last ditch tackles that contort his body in mysterious ways.

Thanks for informing me as I was unaware of this incident. I think he may go into lunatic mode until he rebounds off/ ploughs through something :(

People who go through mental gymnastics to advocate keeping this absolute trash around need help.

Too right.
If I were Jose, immediately after he scored the last OG, I'd have hooked him and as he walked off, I'd just look at him and shake my head. Jones would know that he wouldn't be playing in the first team ever again.
I'd rather play a U18s defender, than Phil Jones. Jones has a mistake in him, in every single match, which usually gives the opponent a goal. In the last game, he gave away 2 goals.

No club would be foolish enough to buy Jones.
What may happen is that we allow his contract to expire and he may sign with another club, on a pay as you play contract.
But, what is more likely is that we will give him a new contract.

Well said.

The amount of dead wood still at the club is unbelievable. Phil Jones leaving the club will be a big step in the right direction. He is a travesty and it is an absolute embarrassment that he is still at the club. The FA Cup final was the final straw for me, I can’t believe he wasn’t sold after that.

Unfortunately for Jones his just never able to keep himself fit and his not a reliable back up! What good is a back up who's always injured ? thus never allowing himself to sustain any consistency. I'm sure there's a player there somewhere but his had long enough at United. We hold onto certain players who are not good enough for way too long. I'd ship him off in January and bring Tuanzebe back and give him a place in the squad. Don't know why we left Daley blind go and kept Jones ! We need to rebuild our squad and get rid of the deadwood !

I agree. I just don't understand how certain players have been here for 5 years plus when its obvious to all of us they aren't good enough. Look at all the other big clubs ! They don't keep players who perform as poor as ours. If anybody said 5 years ago that in 2018 we'd still be playing Jones smalling young and Valencia you'd have laughed !

Good forwards force defenders into making errors. With Jones, they don't have to.

Extensions for Fellani and Smalling. Keeping Jones after he turned into a piece of glass as well as just a flat out shite player. Keeping Rojo, a disgusting CB who always looks like he's trying to two foot someone or score a screamer from 45 yards out.

We keep dross like Jones around, we should not expect to compete for anything meaningful. If he's still here next season, I'm gonna guess Mourinho is here as well.

Would really not like either as they don't do much positively for the club between the 2 of them
