What did you see in Matic and Herreras performances? I'm curious whether you judge them as ok because you have different expectations of them, or because they did something Pogba didn't? don't mean this in a passive aggressive way- just interested.

I just think they were more involved. Doing the basics you want from your central midfielders. Pogba was just peripheral.

He really needs to stop trying to "protect the ball" by stepping over it. It's asking for trouble. He should have gone off a few weeks ago for a similar incident.

Mainly to do with the fact that he was marked much more tightly than the other two.

Think Pogba's issue is that he doesn't change up his game and keep it simple when the game is tight. That's the issue, Matic and Herrera keep it simple so doesn't look as bad, Pogba wants to do it all himself.

Reminded me of a few of his lacklustre performances in big games under Mourinho. Had one great run in the first half but not much else came off. Could easily have been sent off earlier given the number of reckless challenges he made. For some reason it never seemed to register that he needed to calm down once he had got a yellow card.

Amazing how the best players in the world are playing with the best players in the world.....
As we probably agree, our players mostly aren’t the best in the world. I still think Herrera and Pogba are good enough to compete against anyone in the world, we lack the ”best players” elsewhere and it’s also a question of team structure.

This will typically happen on the very rare occasion a CM gets a dedicated man marker. It doesn't matter how good you are.

Pirlo once told his teammates not to bother passing the ball to him at all against Malta because he was being so tightly man marked

Agree. Also Pirlo himself was marked out of a game by Park twice. It happens. That doesn't make Pirlo a bad player. If anything it shows how much respect the opposition have for you.

Definitely part of the issue. I also think his positioning when we don’t have the ball is pretty terrible. Which is why you rarely see him make interceptions (think he averages less one per game). Which is fine against weak teams but when we’re up against the very best you need all your central midfielders to work as a unit when the opposition have the ball.

These agenda postings

In big ties control is everything. He wasn't playing as a no 10 this game and played in a midfield 3 but he provides no control as a midfielder in a 3 specially in big games with a competitive midfield.

You could pull it off at juventus with vidal and pirlo in the middle giving you all the freedom you like, we can never be favourites in big games with pogba in the middle now without those level of commanding players to cover for his frailties.

Same thing vs Arsenal a while back earning him a red. However it’s still one of his top attributes, he prevents a lot of turnovers, draws many fouls, and ends up turning a lot of players with the same move.

Have been saying it all along, but the cafe just brushes it under the carpet.

I like Herrera but there's not a top team in Europe that he gets into and that's my barometer. Theres not even an argument. Good player but if you play as a 3 especially if Pogs plays further forward, we need more than just 'good'.....

Agreed. There's plenty of times he's just strolling back instead of getting into the right position. I wonder how much of this is tactical though. Being allowed to cheat that little bit defensively is part of how he often finds himself getting the ball in great counter attacking positions. It wouldn't surprise me if Ole indulges it a bit for his ability in the transition.

I was disappointed with Pogba today, though I set the bar higher for him. He wasn’t really bad-player-bad, but he has ssomething to learn about being man-marked by the best. He needs to move around more proactively, let the ball flow faster, and learn how to deal more constructively with his own frustration. For a game runner, at this level, he’s still young and learning.

Herrera got more ball because he is more aggressive when frustrated, unfortunately he can become a bit overheated at times, as happened in the end today.

Ironic how so many United fans were spitting bile at Shelvey for more or less doing the same thing. I don’t think there’s any malice in it but it looks terrible if you get the timing wrong.

Oh certainly but it has paid off for us and Ole and will hopefully be the case for the remaining games.

Behind pogba, you need two damn good midfeild con

But clearly this game he was a lot deeper and playing as a left of three than a 10. He had no influence offensively or defensively which would affect the game.

I don't think there's any malice in it either. He genuinely looks like he's trying to get his body in. It's just a bit of an eccentricity in his technique imo.

But at the end of the day if you put your foot over the ball and make contact you will get sent off as often as not. Needs to stop doing it.

Agree, I'm sorry but top teams aren't gonna worry about Herrera or Matic. Nullified Pogs and those two aren't gonna offer anything other than endeavour and hard work.

Agreed. Just don't think he needs to raise his foot as much to do it. It's asking for trouble.

Was marked out of the game tonight, and was poor when we had to defend or win the ball back. When he gets going he looks unstoppable, but PSG did a good job of containing him all game. Perhaps still our best player on the pitch going forward for us tonight, and that tells you everything. He needs to work on his temperament, though - it's not the first time he's lost his head when refs have not blown the whistle his way. The game will be unfair at times, but rash challenges in retaliation and tantrums on the pitch are not the hallmarks of top players. Don't mention Zidane's headbutt.

His red takes us out of the tie entirely.

It's also going to happen more and more as everyone can see how influential he is. He needs to learn to deal with it.

And we need to share the burden of creativity better.

This is why we need a player like eriksen at the moment than a 19 year old kid like Sancho even though he might be great talent( in my view he is not ready to step up and take us to next level.)

We are a one man team creative wise as even matic sides passing sideways when pressed. I would totally put everything in for him and play him in lingard position and also get a replacement for matic.

I can think of quite a few Herrera through balls which have been converted and Matic has a good pass in him, too.

You could have Modric and Pirlo in that midfield today and we still wouldn't have had an opening if they didn't have anyone to run onto their defence-splitting passes. Sanchez and Mata were both not interested in getting behind PSG's defence, and Rashford was marked out all game.

Don't expect them to get in behind one bit, one needs to be sold and one needs to be played near to oppositions box than on wings.

Could really have done with rashford switching to the wings after two injuries. With lukaku on the other wing and Sanchez as main striker in the middle. Lost all our attacking threat after injuries.

I actually felt ok in midfield. MAtic was winning a lot of balls early. They destroyed us on the flanks once the pace was taken out of our attack.

Man marked out of the game. No real shame in it, we did it to Pirlo before with Park.

Only shame is how 1 player dependant we are. Take out Pogba take out our goals.

They destroyed us on the flanks after we lost the midfield control to win it back high up and intercept on time or delay it, our def mid is very easy to play against.

We can't control the counter attack after matic looses his legs and energy and pogba is always half arsed or just not good enough without the ball.

Our midfield was left exposed because the first line of press wasn't there. That's when PSG could pile forwards.

Ole said that Pogba was our best player despite having 3 players around him throughout the game.

Offered absolutely nothing tonight. Then gets a silly red for his immature behaviour.

I dunno what game he was watching.

I guess he's the only one who created a bit of danger when he skipped past Kimpembe for that pass in the box. I mean, outside of that I barely noticed Pogba this game. Tuchel and Marquinhos did a hell of a job on him. Without Pogba, United just doesn't have the weapons to create a lot of danger.

They did to him what Ander Herrera was doing to Hazard. Sucks when you only have one creative threat
