Paris terror attacks on Friday 13th

Incredibly naive tweet. Religion is the cause, until people realise this nothing will change. It doesn't matter what religion you are from!

It isn't the cause, the cause is multi faceted and Western foreign policy is a big part of that cause. Certain interpretations of Islamic doctrine, interpretations that to me seem impossible to completely discredit from the text is a sizeable part of it too, if you ask me.

Can we please stop talking about religion for now and just follow the developments? We already have a mega-thread about insulting religions and religious people, please continue the discussion there if you must?

Not as long as you don't pose a political threat to their careers. This is not the time to beg our rulers for even more surveillance.

In the case of France it surely seems like they have been failing their people.

5 explosions at the concert hall and gun battles? So Sky say...looks like it's a shoot out.
Won't be a shoot out as such, if there is an assualt on the siege going on it will most likely be French anti terror units popping flashbangs before moving in. Old theater like this is one of the worst types to assault if it is ongoing.

That said it could also go the other way and be the terrorists deciding they have enough coverage and now its time to blow themselves/hostages up. Taking hostages is not really the modus operandi of who we all think it is, not without planning to do something 'big' with them.

I just find it hard to agree. These religious attacks seem to be carried out by normal people who are not evil. They truly believe in what they are doing and think it's the right thing to do.
Some are likely people who can be easily manipulated to do anything, be it religion or political. Do we get rid of politics as well? Unfortunately their will always be bad people with a lust for power who will carry things like this out. It's a shame for the people who follow their religions and would never hurt a fly and are genuinely good people.

I know now isn't the greatest of times to be criticising the government, but for 7 attacks to have taken place simultaneously and the government/special forces not to have picked up on it is embarrassing.

That's the point. Some people will always find a "reason". As others have said, if religion didn't exist they'd find some other differences to use as a reason.
I was never all that worried about the government 'listening in' on our phones. For reasons like this.
Indeed. Some people are way too paranoid about all that IMO. You're not really that important, mate. If it helps catching shit like this in the build-up I'm all for giving up a little personal freedom. If they want to listen in on the calls to my mum they're more than welcome.

Human nature is the cause. Religion is the justification.

Same here. I don't think we're actually giving up freedom for security. I have nothing to hide, therefore I do not fear our own governments, nor do I believe they would unjustly pursue me as some think.

Would you be willing to take all your curtains & blinds down?

Exactly. I have no problem with it.

France introduced very draconian surveillance legislation in the aftermath of the Charlie Hebdo shootings so if you want to bring up surveillance, well it didn't prevent this.

Religion is the cause?

Humanity is the cause, whether we had religion or not we as human beings would find something to give us cause to fight, to feel like we have meaning and something to make our actions just.

Religion isnt the cause, its just an easy source to blame other than our human nature.

I know what you're saying, but it's down to religion that these extremists/fanatics have no fear of death, and that's what makes modern terrorism so hard to deal with. Political terrorism is bad enough, but it's religion that drives these people - at least the ones doing the dirty work. I'm not so sure the ones in charge have quite such 'noble' aspirations.

They have, but they've failed to use the tools they do have. Get competent people in who can use them, don't turn into one big police state.

Genuinely heartbreaking, this.

Not really the time for finger-pointing but this level of calculated violence should surely be detected beforehand.

hollande is not sick. fell for a satirical website which made a shitty joke.

I apologize and I deleted all my posts relating to it.

CNBC saying that it's more likely to be Al Quaeda or an affiliate then it is to be ISIS.

I wonder why. AQ have been relegated to the background for months compared to ISIS having the front lines and doing a lot worse shit than anybody else.

Would you be willing to take all your curtains & blinds down?

Bad analogy, but I'll play with it. The only thing I wouldn't want my neighbors seeing is what i do with the Mrs at night. The government? They'd only care if I piqued their interest. I'm sure I don't.

Shit, just read through to catch up, the escalation of the death toll is horrifying. Hope to feck those in the theatre can be brought out...

What makes me extra sick is that you just know who comes out of these outrages stronger - the terrorists themselves and the far right.

Hope Hollande's okay as well, the stress must be on another level.

9/11 was even worse. Terrible stuff in Paris
