Rennes don't need the money, they have the wealthiest owner around. They do hold all the cards, ideally they'd like one more year of contract but I'm sure Dembélé doesn't want to run out his 2 year contract at €3k/w or whatever measly wages he's on.

If Rennes are so rich, how come they don't spend any money?

Because the player and i.e. his mother think that it's better for his development. Looking at a number of very young players who have moved to elite clubs and didn't make it that's IMHO a perfectly sensible perception. I'd say the same if he choses another club comparable to Dortmund.
His development? What about what United have brought through this season. United would look after his development.

I've written it before, I'll write it again. It doesn't matter what you think about United's development opportunities or Dortmund's development oportunities. It doesn't matter what I think about the two* or what his agent or his current club think.

It only matters what he and his mother think at the end of the day. Right now they think Dortmund. They might stay determined on that. They could change their mind. We'll learn at the very latest on September 1st.

* If I were an agent or had a son in his situation, I'd advise him to join Dortmund or a club with similar conditions at this point, not a club like United, and move on in 2-3 years time.

That wasn't my point; I have no idea about Rennes' finances.

My point was and still is that there are three different scenarios, and Igor had only described two so I added the third. We'll see which of the three scenarios materializes at the very latest on the 1st of September.

Pinault is a smart businessman, he paid for the stadium and academy and covers losses when needed.

Selling a €50m asset for €15m wouldn't be smart business, especially unnecessary when €15m is barely 0.1% of Pinault's net Worth..

Building a stadium and a youth academy are both very long-term investments to support sustained growth. Meddling with a particular transfer is something else entirely. I haven't read any statements from Pinault, so I can't judge his character, but Rennes transfer spending (or the lack of it) doesn't support support the claim that they don't need money.

Dembele's value will barely decrease for the next season, and I doubt that Dembele likes to go to BVB so much that he is willing to stay for another 2 years on Rennes in very low wages, while there might be other clubs who offer to Rennes 30m and to him to essentially increase his wages by 10 times.

I think that Rennes has all the power on this transfer, assuming that there are other interested clubs.

I don't think you're wrong, but I don't see it in such an absolute way. Dembele is still young, he might be willing to wait for a season and at the same time 18 year old footballers aren't really the most stable of assets, so keeping him would still come with certain risks for Rennes (as in: one long term injury coupled with the fact that his contract runs out in 18 and suddenly they'd be happy to get a €15-20m offer next summer).

Anyone coming to this thread as some sort of hope of consolation after the Sanches saga is in the wrong place, just warning you now.

Ànd I'm saying that Unitd shouldn't miss out on him. Of course you would say to join Dortmund.

You perfectly know that it's not true, it's like saying that Marseille or Lille don't need the money. Pinault underwrite he doesn't spend in the team, Rennes won't hold on Dembélé if he wants to move and they won't hold on Dembélé if +25m are put on the table.

They have no pressing need to sell as they have already sold Doucouré in january for €10m. They also refused €12m for Mexer last summer, they're not just autoselling anyone at any price. €30m might do it but we'll see.

They are now at a key timing to show if there is anything behind the project, they have 0 incentive to sell at cut price. Considering what happened last summer I don't think they're in the mood to do Dembélé any special favours.

Edit: I forgot to add this tweet which he retweeted:

He also liked some videos of Dortmund's Yellow Wall so take from that what you will. Perhaps he looks forward to play there once a season in a Bayern jersey. ;)

They have lost a lot of money via very overpaid acquisitions in the early 2000s so the shareholder is traumatized

This one appears to be a done dealio.
As Renato Sanches was to United? :wenger: Nothing surprises me these days, it looks likely he'd want to join us but it's far from certain yet he will. Some day before 1st of September we'll all know.

Him and Sanches would have been great future prospects to have. But hey. We are a trainwreck atm so I'm not surprised we are not moving for him.

You've got quotes from the player in this case saying it's decided. Either way, it appears we are not in the equation and Germany is his next destination. I'd rather he goes to Dortmund than Bayern.

This club is able to invest a lot if the owner wants :)

Obviously, Pinault could invest if he wanted to, with 12bn he is one of the richest football owners in the world but he showed that he wasn't willing to throw money at football since 2000.

Watch him go to Liverpool and have a effect similar to Martial :(

Am told it's now between Liverpool and Borussia Dortmund to sign Ousmane #Dembele from Rennes. Player said to like Jurgen Klopp #lfc

Big legal row brewing between Rennes and Ousmane Dembele's agent, who claims club are trying to sell teenager to Dortmund behind his back
With all due respect I'm not sure how much in the know ed_aarons really is ... :D

He is the Deputy news editor at the guardian. I have now idea how itk he is though.

Watch him go to Liverpool and tear it up whilst we have to watch another season of square pegs in round holes.

LVG is a cnut!

Some rumours that Dortmund may go for Gabigol instead.

Rennes don't have any reason to be low balled in this transfer tbh. Doubt his value decreases next year even if 1 year is left from the 15 million euro on offer. Infact it will probably incease even if he doesn't sign a new contract which he will probably have too for a wage increase.

Not Liverpool, please :(

Firminho, Coutinho, Origi, Sturridge and Dembele, compared to our lot will be depressing.

Would be a fantastic signing for whoever signs him. Hope we put a bid in.

I usually wouldn't refer to SportBILD however they've been the ones who broke the story Dembele to Dortmund first.
They say the deal is expected to be finalized this week which if true would (roughly) coincide with what French media have written some time back: Announcement on 14th of May.
