OT EVACUATED | Device signed as having been recovered, could NOT be detected by sniffer dogs

The news this morning is, unsurprisingly, using pot-stirring terms such as fiasco and outrage. Personally, I felt the stewards and police did a really good job. The steward in our stand was doing his best to inform people what was happening - he didn't have a lot of information to begin with, but he kept us posted as news came in. Our stand was one of the last to be evacuated and the mood in the stands was good, Bournemouth fans were happily singing "you don't know what you're doing," while our fans quipped this is the most entertainment we've seen this season.

When the game was finally abandoned, we made our way out and again everything was well handled. There was no running, no overcrowding and people were led away from the stadium in a surprisingly orderly way. There were inevitably a few drunks arguing with the police that they wanted to go in a certain direction, and a few other idiots blaming everything on Muslims, but on the whole I thought everything was well managed.

Well done to the club for making lots of right decisions, too. Calling the game off was the only call to make and refunding all the tickets is a good gesture. Just a shame the last-day drama didn't unfold as it might have done - would City's nerves have told if there were 1-1 at half time and we were 2-0 up? We'll never know.

If you hire a taxi and he gets a speeding fine do you pay it?

You're essentially saying businesses are absolved of all blame if any outsourced services go wrong. Which is just silly.

- The security firm would have been hired by United. It's United's responsibility.
- Clearly the toilets weren't properly checked before letting tens of thousands of people in.

This is entirely United's fault. To be pedantic, the Premier League will blame United and United will blame the security firm, but the blame still goes through us.

This is the most frightening aspect of it all. Surely every dam place, in this era of high alert, is thoroughly checked before letting people in. However, as I said before, the right actions were taken after discovery that is for sure.

If you hire a taxi and he gets a speeding fine do you pay it?

That's ridiculous, you're either being a contrarion on purpose or you've had a leave of your senses

I really do wonder what level some on here would stoop to in order to ignore any criticism and defend the club. I'd really hope we wouldn't see Liverpool levels but I'm not sure.

We can only hope that lessons will be learned from this.

Lessons such as; all fake bombs must be signed for.

Guys, I'm being told that the security firm may have sent over a fax letting United know that they left a fake bomb in the toilets.

As soon as the club get the old Windows 95 computer switched on, we'll know more

If you hire an electrician at home and he blows the power to the whole street is it your fault for hiring him?
At home? Not your fault.

As a business. Yes. You can and would be fined.

Did he have the correct credentials?
Did he have the relevant experience?
Did he have the correct training or supervision?

I have no idea but I do know that this incident is unequivocally United's responsibility and no reasonable right thinking person would say otherwise. Try taking off the red tinted specs, the situation is already embarrassing enough !

Do people really think we completely outsource the issue of security without any internal management or governance?

They're outsourced to carry out functions that we oversee as it's ultimately the clubs responsibility. The idea that we have no involvement in these activities is a bit much.

I assume it must have been a little hidden. For no member of staff to see this in pre-match sweeps and for no fan to see this before the member of staff found it, 20 mins before KO, it must have been quite concealed.

Obviously it's poor from the security firm but United are not blameless. It must have been lazy from whoever checked the toilets.

What a shambles.

Mind you I've been saying to the missus all season that OT has got to be top of any disgruntled jihadist twat's list to have a pop at. Another reason to not bother your arse going.

City fans will be resting easy though - no point in wasting explosives blowing up a load of blue plastic.

Of course it's United's fault. They wouldn't just let an outsourced company work without supervision or management. The system failed although the reaction to this failure in terms of emptying the stadium worked very well. So....every cloud......

I've not planted many bombs but I reckon they need concealing alright :wenger:

Generally they don't look like this...

I am no United fan and obviously watched the event unfolding from hundreds kilometers away but I'm disgusted about the way the media portray it. It is as if they are disappointed that no real threat existed or nobody got hurt. They appear to lack the sensation and outrage an attack as in Paris or Belgium causes and turn it into ridiculing United. Nobody should be proud to have overlooked a suspicious item, I get that. But how the media are playing this story is really low IMO.

I have been impressed how calm everybody was, stewarts and fans alike, and how well the evacuation was executed. It's sad that this doesn't get the recognition it deserves.

These days, with 75 thousand in the crowd and with what happened in France, regardless that it has now been found out to be a fake training excercise pretend bomb, it was still the right thing to do. You just never know, it could have been switched, it could have been real. I'm glad it wasn't obviously since the aftermath of something like that would have severed consequences for every Premier League ground next season, but for the sake of a ruddy game of football, I would so prefer the club to err on the side of vigilance and caution, no matter who it pisses off.

Absolutely. Of course it shouldn't have happened, but the immediate reaction was fantastic. On one hand, a positive is a real life drill without knowing it's a drill. On the other, you could argue it potentially makes the planning of something real slightly easier from the bad guy's point of view.

So you don't think that United are responsible for what goes on in their own stadium. I wonder who is ?

There should be no replay. United should forfeit the match as they have failed to fulfill a fixture due to something that was entirely in their control - the device was left by a Company contracted by United and United failed to find the device over a period of several days. Do they not sweep the stadium every day ?

Anyway, the PL should reverse their decision and award 3 points to Bournemouth.

And just think - however bad your Monday morning is, someone somewhere is having the shittiest one ever right now.

Only people who want to use this as another way to have a pop at United will call this embarasssing. Security is paramount and the system failed. Hopefully lesson learnt and all clubs will look at this and review their procedures.

Firstly United aren't a shambles so let's get that straight. I would like to know how it was missed, when someone can just walk in and see it though. The fact you had a security firm not account for their items is just insanity. Were they not picking up the phone or what? Why did it take so long to hear this when it would seem a natural route to go down? Happy that no one hurt and the supporters are fine but then that vid singing about the FA cup is not such a good idea now. Lots of questions to be answered but to make something work, you have to rely on people not being incompetent or having another agenda. So that security firm, the person that spotted it - have questions to answer. Unless we've not been in that toilet the last 3/4 days - how did they notice it? How was it left there? Why did it take so long for us to get that information from them? Why weren't they called to see if they recognize their own device? Where was the bomb exactly? How visible was it? How many people have entered this toilet in the last 4 days etc. Lots of questions that need answering.

A lot would have been learned from the evacuation - you can somewhat 'stage' an evacuation but not one of 75k. If anything it should help if anything like this does happen in the future.

The ironically named Polite Poster popping in with his entirely objective views of United once again.

If the company loaned Old trafford then yes United are responsible. If United were client of the company then no, United aren't responsible but United should have a better control of Old trafford and 4 days without checking thoroughly the stadium is strange.

Not having a go at anyone, just thinking...;

I wonder if the same people who blame the security company, and not United, are also the type to say that we live in a world where "health and safety's gone mad". It seems to me that both opinions are similar; that blame can only fall onto a singular person or entity and is not a shared responsibility.

Could be a personality thing

I was speaking to a copper outside the stadium about 4ish yesterday, and he said they'll only know what it is ONCE they've controlled exploded it...he was saying it could be a Ben 10 lunchbox with a baguette in it, and they'd just explode it and then check afterwards...

They fire a high speed jet of water at it, to feck it it up, and then check through the leftovers to piece together what it was...only then were they SURE that it as a decoy, and in my opinion, that's the right way to do it...

The way they dealt with it, was great I reckon...there was no panic, nobody running about, although I didn't even make it into the ground...

It's safe to assume that the answer to all those questions is yes.

You've long since shown yourself as not worth trying to sensibly discuss anything with.

That's definitely poor to say the least, and the number of checks carried out as standard will definitely be changing now!

I think it's pretty universally agreed that the reaction to finding this device was completely right and top notch. It's WHY it was there, not found before the crowd were already mostly in and who is responsible that people are arguing about.

Do we need to use the same squad as Saturday or can we announce a new one? I'd imagine Van Gaal would want to rest a bunch of players if possible.

Except most people would argue the security firm is to blame and not just an individual, so whatever point your making about people is irrelevant

Well I heard that the Safety Certificate demands a full security seep 24 hours before the game...which obviously either didn't happen, or more likely, wasn't done very well...

Either way, when you look at it, it's cost United a fortune...not only in refunds, etc, but all those pies, hot dogs, etc which I'm assuming went to waste...(or more likely, will be kept at Nuclear temperatures until Tuesday and re-sold)

What's the point in hiring a security firm for their expertise if you are then responsible for the security yourself.

In certain that either the security firm or their insurance will be taking responsibility here.

I understand a member of the public found it? Which begs the question how the hell was it missed. I mean....what was he doing in that toilet that led him to find it that the sweep couldn't! :smirk:
