Best city for students. Manchester's full of them. . .

You'll love it up here.

Students are wankers. Therefore best city for wankers.

I like watching 18 year old young lasses have a good wank, especially when they are wanking me with their mouths wide open.

It's great stuff. :D

City Centre's good. Got a really good cosmopolitan vibe. No scallies/townies, but plenty of students in skate wear, which to be fair iis much better than having the former. Shopping and nightlife is great. Foods pretty decent. Yep it's a cool place to be. . .

However, I even seen a plenty of Japanese tourists with cameras, recently :nervous:

If things go right then I could be coming to Uni up there this year or next (depending of finances). I go back a bit but I havent lived there for about 10 years - whats it like these days, for Students etc.?

Do you know much about the Uni's etc., their reputation or what not. Interested to see how its changed, I sense it when I go back but I suppose I'll have to live there before I fully appreciate it.

It's the best place to go to uni in the country. Of course i'm biased, but if you look at what you've got I can't think of a better place to go. In terms of education then Victoria and UMIST were both the bees knees. Now they've merged it's just going to get bigger and better. It's a red brick establishment and is highly respected around the country, and I can testify to that. There's also Salford which is respectable but out of the way from most of the city's other students. Met is poly. As for the city, well it's the best place in the country for music, sport and the nightlife in general is amazing. There's tons of cheap places to eat from every day as a skanky student. I know people who cooked feck all for almost their whole uni life. I feel so sorry for people who went to campus unis or ones in small towns because they simply missed out on so much. Basically you get everything you want but accomodation isn't stupidly expensive, although I believe that is changing. Manchester's got variety, is a little alternative and you feel it as soon as you arrive. Another thing, Manchester students came out out top of a poll measuring the amount of drink and drugs taken over the course to degree. If that isn't reason enough to move heaven and earth to get a place, I don't know what is.

I second JSVs remarks.

More student pussy in one location than anywhere else in Europe too!

Right, this needs to continue, as I'll go and get some more pics tomorrow.

First, my outside pics!

You park in the Lowrey car park don't you? Pretending that you are off to see some high culture?

Day off? My whole life at the moment is a grand day off!

Don't like heights though, so cranes are well out.

So, anyone got an idea what the thing will look like from inside???

No, I've searched in vain to find the plans. If it was in Salford, there is no problem as Salford CC scan all of their planning applications into PDFs and put them on their website. Sadly, Trafford MBC do not do this. The only way I could get them is if I went to the planning office of TMBC and asked to see them.

Some people have tried renders of it, but not to great success.

You know. It makes sense if they're going to slope the third tier down. Otherwise there will be gap behing the second tier in the corners touching the North Stand, if you get my drift.

I do, but I have a nasty feeling that it will end up similar to the third tier in this council house:

stadium-new5.jpg

It'll just stop where it is. :(

I mean, look at the wasted space! I suppose they could expand into it, but surely it would have been far cheaper to do it when they were adding the lower tier and the stand that replaced the temorary one used in the Commonwealth games.

Yes, but if they left it like that, what about the gap between the back/facade and the new tier?

Work it out. The north, is slightly deeper than the other stands. So if you draw a line from the Strettie to the north, there will be a small portion behind the new corners, that will have a gap. This the part they'll have to extend over to cover up.

and the city third tier. They couldn't have extended it further into the corners, as it would have changed the shape of the exterior.

Really?

As for the depth, you can easily reduce the height of tier three, as well as its depth. But look at the aerial photograph from the satellite, if anything, the Stret and Score have slightly greater depth than the North.

Who is the contractor for the construction? Maybe they have information on their web site.

It's Laing O'Rourke, and I've tried, there is nothing.

I know. But the photograph isn't the sharpest.

The North does come out more than the Strettie, due to the third tier, which isn't 100% on top of the second tier.

Here are some of my recent rants on trying to find out the plans:

Planning application number is H/60452, but Trafford Council don't put PDFs on their site like other councils do, so I can't find the detailed plans. All TMBC website says is:

Manchester United stadium, Sir Matt Busby Way, Old Trafford; on land bounded by Sir Matt Busby Way, United Road and railway
Construction of additional seating tiers to enable the expansion of stadium capacity to provide an additional 7,900 seats, hospitality and ancilliary facilities in the north east and north west quadrants of the stadium. (Application received 10/09/2004)
Decision: Approved With Conditions 03/03/2005

These were the conditions:

"In reaching its decision the committee discussed and took on board the comments made at the public meeting earlier in the week, as well as the fact that the basis of the legal agreement had been provisionally secured by officers in discussion with the Club. The agreement will now mean that the Club must make a significant financial commitment of £400,000 before the stands are used and £600,000 over the following 10 year period. This money will be invested in improvements to public transport serving the stadium, measures to reduce the impact of matches on local residents and investment in sports facilities in the north of the Borough. The latter is something everyone involved is extremely keen to see established at the earliest possibility.

"The Council is also committed to continuing to work with the club and local residents, both individually and through the Gorse Hill Partnership (Community Action Group), to make sure that this work is carried out with the least amount of disruption and inconvenience to the many people living close to and around the ground" she said.

Atherden, Fuller & Leng were the architects of the North, Score, and Stret expansions, but their website says nothing about the current expansion at all.

http://www.afl-uk.com/

Have United chosen a different architect of this expansion?

Another weird thing is that the blokes at the stadium had "Laing O' Rourke" on their jackets, so I'm supposing that they are the main contractor. Yet their website says nothing either.

This is all being kept rather secret!!!

Birse Construction was the main contractor on the Stret and Score ends, but their website says nothing either!

Believe me, I've tried to find out, and nothing. The only way would be to get down to Trafford Planning Office.

The Structural Engineers are Roscoe Capita of Cheadle!

It was AFL who drew the plans up, I've seen the tender summary on BuildOnline...

Laing O'Rourke are the principal contractors, although large portions are to be totally sub-let to relevant trades on a design and build basis...

I know a guy at AFL so I'll try and get a copy of the plans from him...

They do all the design works for Liverpool too...

THE MOST IMPORTANT thing happening to the club right now, and all the OOter wankers don't give a shite!

This thread should be sticky, and people should be interested in it, but they are not are they, because they are all OOter tossers where the actual place where the football is played doesn't seem to matter.

Cnuts!

Carry on, prattle on about VDS, Park, etc. Whatever might come along.

cnuts!

what i don't get is why thay are saying they can't / won't redevelop the main stand. Yes i know there's the issue with the railway line and the houses behind it, but look at how far back the main stand already goes. In comparison to the East / West stands it's not that much less deep. Ok, they wouldn't be able to replicate the North stand but with all the construction technology about surely they could add a second tier with the available space?

the above photo shows the depth of the current south stand isn't far off the East stand

They will expand in time, but the depth of the South is less than the North by about a third. Yes, of course it can be done, but it wil cost one hell of a lot more than the 18m they paid for the North which was done 10 years ago. I suppose in today's money that would be at least 30m and then there are the railway concerns.

My worry is Glazer and his need to get more money in to repay the debt. I can seriously see him sticking ten stories of prime exec boxes on top of the South stand.

I pray!

Something tells me some people are more worried about the cancerous leach attached to our club, or those fans who have had to jack it in since he arrived on the scene, than a few extra seats!.

Interesting nonetheless, but not the most important thing happening to the club, personally im more concerned by the diehard/long term reds who wont be filling those seats.

What do you think of Glazer, FC United et al, by the way? Will you still go to games if you get the chance?

Two new renders. Shame they are so small.

They're just poorly done renders. We'll have to wait for better ones, to get a proper idea.

You fecking lot really don't deserve this, prattling on about FC United and other crap.........

In fact, all you FC United cnuts can feck off, this has no interest at all to you.

But anyway, here is a photo courtesy of Chris "CAW" Wilkinson from skycrapernews.com

It's going up, slowly! You can clearly see the new stairwell/cantilever support rising between the North and Score ends (half way up) with the steelwork a little bit further behind.

It makes me laugh, you have pages upon pages of FC United an tranfer talk crap, yet this, the most important thing to happen to our stadium in 10 years, and very few of you are interested. And a load of those so called "local" supporters who go past the place at least once a wekk could easily take an interest, even post some pics, do they?

No, they would rather ask us all to boycot the Champions League qualifier after not gaining success in asking UEFA to chuck us out. fecking hell, I don't even live in the country, but at least I've posted some pictures of this, and get pictures to you.
