Now for the holy grail: Playmaker

Darren Fletcher wouldn't have made one little bit of difference vs. Barcelona.

If fully fit and playing the way he was prior to last season then I'm not sure how you can be so certain tbh

Carrick
Fletcher
Anderson
Giggs
Park
Cleverley
Pogba

Its not like we're without midfield options, but.... Scholes, Hargreaves and Gibson on the way out, SURELY........

Last year aside its not like Fergie hasnt got previous in terms of bringing in more than 3 at once......

2009
Antonio Valencia
Michael Owen
Obertan
Diouf
Tosic

2008
Berbatov
Manucho
Possebon
Fabio Da Silva
Raf Da Silva

2007

Henrik Larsson
Danny Welbeck
Frederico Macheda

Unfortunately there isn't any realistic signing available for the midfield. And we cannot afford to spend on all the touted prodigies like Pastore, Banega, Martinez, Ganso, etc.

It seems all very easy for everyone to say I'm wrong and we'll definitely sign someone but at the same time no one wants to actually put their neck out there and state a name :smirk:
No-one can state a name because no-one knows who Fergie has in mind. I shouldn't imagine it's something he goes around discussing with all and sundry, but he will have someone in his sights.

I reckon we're done for the summer. We need someone but Giggs, Carrick, Fletcher & Anderson will get us through this season, and we have some other options there if we desperately need them.

One more season, and we'll bring the kids through if they show that they're ready.

That's an insane gamble. But unfortunately I agree.

Its not that big a gamble. I think we can win the title again with the current squad, and we might just save ourselves a fortune if these kids work out.

That said I do think we'll sign someone if the right deal comes along, but it looks like all of the big European clubs will be in for just about every major midfielder we might be interested in, so it won't come cheap unless we find another gem somewhere.

Central midfield has been a big problem throughout the season and we ended up with 80 points, a relatively low amount that wouldn't have been enough for even a second place finish in the last few years. If the midfield issues are not addressed, it's hard to see a lot of improvement on that points tally so we'll be left hoping that our rivals don't improve either, that they'll be as weak as they've been this season.

So it is a big gamble, a very big one.

I can't believe that people here think that we're not gonna sign a midfielder in this window particularly now that Scholesy has retired and Gibbo is being sold plus Tunnicliffe is also going on loan. I think some people are just being pessimist for the sake of it. There's no way that we're not gonna sign a Central Midfielder in this window.

Expect the worse and then you'll be pleasantly surprised if something positive happens :)

The thing is, Giggsy was quality in the central position and we'd be hard pressed to find a better option within our price range that would be willing to move and not demand huge wages. It may be naive of me, but I'm hoping that something happens with this Nasri business. We'd land on our feet big time if we were able to get him here for the prices being mentioned.

I honestly do think Fergie might go with what we've got whilst Giggs is still around, and we are more than capable of winning the league again with that. Wed probably have to hope that someone else knocked Barca out of the CL, but if that happened then we are capable of beating the rest.

We're a bit light even in terms of numbers: Giggs will turn 38 in a matter of months and can't play every week, Anderson is injury prone and suddenly we'll have to plug the holes with the likes of Park or Cleverley when the latter barely ever played CM before...

It would be a huge gamble. But I can't put it past Fergie.

Exactly, we can think we are fairly covered in the midfield but with Giggs ageing either one of Carrick and Fletcher goes injured suddenly we are left with hardly any natural midfielders. We will have to field Cleverly or Morrison or Pogba. I just don't want it to be end of next season and us complaining that we would have won the league had we signed that midfielder. It would be like Wenger's situation with the goalie.

Its an obvious weakness in our side, I am sure Fergie is aware of it. I hope he goes out there and addresses it.

To me it appears that those saying that we're done for the summer are doing so to lower there own expectation levels, and by saying this they'll perhaps not be as disappointed when we don't bring anybody in. I can kind of see and understand the logic to be honest.

However if we stay as we are in midfield I can guarantee that over the course of next season we will lament the clubs failure to bring in a game changing midfielder and much like the majority of last season we'll expect it to be rectified at the end of next season. 99% of watchers last season at one time or another said we lacked something special in centre mid and to go into the season less equipped than we did last then we are asking for that same problem to come about.

It mustn't be forgotten just how well Paul Scholes started last season, he may not have had the influence towards the end but he was a key player for us early on and we're going to lack that this season.

The only way we'll not bring anybody in is if SAF see's Wayne Rooney playing deeper and pretty much changes the system we've been playing. Or there simply isn't the player available and we all know SAF would rather not sign anybody than make a signing for the sake of it.

Despite our relatively busy summer so far I will go into the season concerned about our midfield if it isn't further added to.

But Modric's position does not conflict with Rooney's (in the new formation). I can see Nasri having a positional conflict with Rooney but Modric can play in that deeper role.

Nearly everyone sees Midfield as our weakest area and rightly so, do you guys really think that SAF will overlook this?

I know I'll be accused of being a muppet now, but I just can't see us not signing a midfielder particularly after we failed to dominate many of the lower club's midfields in the away matches last season.

It's a fecking stupid article though, he wouldn't join us, he loves his boyhood club and wants to go back.

They may as well write a piece about how we should really be chasing Messi.

Agreed. But Fabregas really would be the perfect replacement for Scholes.

Though he doesn't play it often for Arsenal, I'm confident that Nasri could play the deeper CM role. He's put in good performances there for Arsenal and apparently plays there for France sometimes too. It's not just that though, he's a very clever player and is always aware of what is going on around him.

He's no pushover either, and I watched him two seasons ago against Barcelona and thought he looked a man amongst boys, in that Arsenal side. He took that game by the scruff of the neck and worked extremely hard, even when the rest of them looked pyschologically beaten. Personally, I see him as a natural replacement to the current Giggs.

I on the other hand think he is fragile and does no have a high work rate. He isn't the fastest either.

Modric and rodwell and we are done. Sneijders wage demands look to be excessive but nani will still more than likely move to serie a

No shit and whilst we're at it, Ronaldo would be the perfect replacement for Ronaldo, let's chase him too.

Usually the most "perfect" replacements for World Class footballers are the most impossible.

Fabregas isn't as impossible as getting Messi or Ronaldo back.
