Now for the holy grail: Playmaker

You know what, the truth is; the midfield combo of Fletcher, Carrick and Anderson of 2009 is the strongest i've seen our midfield in years in my eyes. Problem is, they only play together in European nights. Its difficult, where do we find a player who is available, would improve our team and isnt overpriced?

... Modric is clearly the way to go. ...
If you want to reach your destination, it's not a good idea to go down a dead-end street.

No Modric, and seemingly no Sneijder or Nasri = time to move onto to Plan D.

Or just win the PL again with the same midfield that won it last year. Sounds like a decent Plan D to me. Have fun in the Europa League btw ;)

And what if the destination is a shop is at the end of the dead end street? And by the time we get there, the municipality have no decided to extend that street into widest open highway imaginable?

The shop is closed, the municipality were elected on an anti-highway ticket and the battery in your sat-nav is drained flat.

To top it all, your car tyres have been slashed, the RAC have cancelled your membership and the tearful kids on the back seat keep asking "are we there yet?"

Modric, Nasri and Sneijder are all a no-go it seems.

How do people feel about Moutinho, he's steadily worked his way up my muppet midfielder list...

There are cheaper options out there which means we can buy another 2 or 3 players that total 35 million.

sorry but that sounds very much like the rafa benitez transfer policy to me.

sign 3 average players for 30million instead of one quality player for the same amount.

I know, I mean I want us to sign Sneijder as much as anyone but hopefully we continue to search for players if this deal falls through.

It did seem like a lot of clubs were interested in him quite a few seasons back, but not now. Not really sure what happened there.

I really like the look of Banega though. He could slot into that central midfield position well, has good passing and is creative. His tenacity also would ensure he cuts it in the Premiere League.

i hope we are going to search for other players if this deal falls through, another summer without a midfield signing would be unacceptable imo, especially with scholes' retirement. even had scholes continue to play, this is a position that needs some improvement.

but we desperately needed someone who is a world class midfielder for next season..and there are not many players who are in the same class as sneidjer..

just hope we are going to sign him and we probably would not need to spend for a midfielder for quite some years..especially with the promising youngsters that we've got in the trio of pogba, tunnicliffe and morrison.

Since we are throwing around names and cant get the big names, what about Martinez? He seems to be highly talented from what I have seen at the U21 and might could have an immidate impact

Your King Muppet status is about to be revoked
Doesn't stop me wanting to sign players, just not for the reasons that was answering for. We don't need to sign anyone and it's because of that that my wanting to sign players makes me the king.

Come on Ricky. it's not that bad. It will only be deemed unacceptable if we fail to win anything. There is no doubt we could stand some improvement centrally, but we have done pretty well with this midfield for at least 4 seasons.

Imo we do not need anyone desperately, Sneijder would be nice but at the prices being touted i cannot see it personally. I just can't see how playing Rooney up front on his own again to accommodate Sneijder in his best position would improve us that much, we would definitely lose the pace and finishing prowess of Hernandez, and Rooney would not be able to drop deep and dictate as he did to such great effect last year.

just hope we are going to sign him and we probably would not need to spend for a midfielder for quite some years..especially with the promising youngsters that we've got in the trio of pogba, tunnicliffe and morrison.

In my view Sneijder would be a good signing, but personally i would prefer someone with a bit more flair like Nasri or Banega. For me Sneijder just doesn't fit, he would have been ideal 2 seasons ago after Ronnie left but now i don't really think we need him that much and it would appear that Fergie seems to feel the same way. Would be a nice signing but not a crucial one. Sneijder is not a next level player imo i don't believe signing him gives us any more chance of either domestic or European success, for me he doesn't add enough to quantify the excessive outlay.

I would be quite happy to give more time to the Carrick and Anderson pairing, very promising at it's best, and more than good enough against 99% of teams. If anyone thinks signing Sneijder would increase our chances against Barca, they are simply deluding themselves imo.

£40m on Fabregas or Banega then maybe the gap would close a little. But Sneijder i just don't see it im afraid.

I guess this is a big week for a playmaker signing. If we don't make a move this week, we probably won't sign anyone else this summer.

Fabregas, Modric, Nasri & Sneijder all deals look on the verge to Barca, Chelsea, City & United respectively. If all four deals go through could start a massive butterfly effect.

From where do you get the notion that Modric is "on the verge" of signing for Chelsea?

The Chelsea bid was dead in the water right from the start and now it's pretty much sunk without trace.

Sky Sports sources understand Chelsea will make a third offer for Tottenham's Luka Modric next week. :nervous:

Yes, a 3rd offer that has reportedly been coming for the last week and which will reportedly increase their bid to 30m from a previously reported 27m bid.

Does anyone seriously believe that, with just 5 days to go before the season kicks-off, an extra 3m on top of a paltry 27m is going to persuade Levy?

Chelsea are either just wasting their time or else the media reports of a 3rd imminent bid are rubbish. Either way it doesn't matter, because Modric just isn't for sale.

I agree, he isn't for sale, but he has his price.

What Chelsea have to do is offer £40m and he will be wearing blue. Chelsea, like the rest of the world, know he is not worth £40m.

40m would be nowhere near enough to persuade Levy.

The issue has little to do with "what Modric is worth".

So, what you are saying is that Levy is extra thick, as opposed to just thick?

You are saying he wouldn't take £40m for a player that doesn't want to play for him and who openly wants away?

What is it about Spurs fans? Have you all been labotomised by the great ugly bald one?

Modric is a good player, but not worth £40m. Certainly not worth anywhere near that as a wantaway player.

Modric is no Fabregas!

Is anyone else thinking of someone along the lines of Miralem Pjanic? Being overlooked at Lyon in favour of Gourcouff, young and has plenty of potential, acres of it in fact. Wouldn't cost the Earth, either.

He's at Lyon so he wouldn't come cheap, their president can get blood out of a stone.

Correct. I am saying that Levy wouldn't sell Modric for 40m.

You keep banging on about what Modric is or is not "worth", when that is not the issue and never has been. It's not the issue because Spurs don't wish to sell their best player, don't need the money and Levy has, for the club's long-term benefit, been determined to crush so-called player power, in which venture he has now succeeded.

You clearly have shallow grasp of the situation.

Oh gee a Modric thread, exciting.

Do you get some kind of joy out of repeatedly telling people that Modric wont be leaving, Glaston? It seems that's all you do on here - tell us Berbatov will or won't be going, tell us Modric will or won't be going, or tell us all of the signings that will (or more often, and amusingly, won't) happen. I think almost everyone's aware of your stance on it, is it that important to make sure everyone is aware?

That's not very sensible is it? Spurs rely on picking up players not quite at the highest level and selling them on for a profit. Good luck signing players of Modric's ilk in the future.

What happened to Spurs raising 40 odd million selling fringe players? Easier said than done it would seem.

I don't create the various initial posts about Modric, but I do choose to respond to many of them.

Most of these initial posts come from your fellow Man. Utd fans (and most of them endlessly claim that Modric will be gone). So if repetition irks you I suggest you take issue with them.

I'm not sure about the length of his contract but I'm sure if he heard that United were after him, he'd be wanting to leave, especially considering his situation at Lyon. I think them even buying Gourcouff in the first place was a stupid move to be honest.

I have absolutely no grasp of the situation, just like yourself.

All will be revealed by the end of the transfer window and we will both know more.

You pontificate on this Manchester United forum with your apparent expert knowledge of Tottenham Hotspur FC, both on and off the field and you have rarely been wrong.... in your mind.

I hope you are right on this one, otherwise you will not only be devoid of some cash, but short of some credibility.

Does everyone still agree we need a midfielder. Even after today, because its going to be a long season and we don't have cover.

But I really hope we don't get Sneijder. For me it has to be Modric.

Agreed all round. Cleverley is looking good but he is still a kid, he's playing very similar to how Modric plays in the middle and it's producing some sumptuous football, so he'd be my choice. I'd also back him to more of a squad man, willing to take being on the bench more often than the likes of Sneijder IMO.
