Now for the holy grail: Playmaker

The moment Manchester City qualified for the Champions League was the moment the Tottenham manager, Harry Redknapp, knew he could no longer compete. "I know some people in the right positions at Manchester City and they have players signed already that will blow your brains out," he remarked. That was two months ago.
That's a point. Where are those players?

Just wondering....i think this is right thread for it from all the 'midfielder threads....

If we DON'T sign a midfielder....is it really the end of the world? Would it be a step backwards? I'm gonna stick my neck out here. I don't think it would be.....

I think it'd literally send some people into tears if we started with Fletch and Carrick in midfield in our first game of the season.

I think we'll struggle a bit without having Scholes to rely on, even if he didn't play a tremendous amount of games last season.

I think we all need to realise that we aren't going to get anymore players.

We've got alot of players moving from the reserves to the main squad. We have already 3 new signings. So why should we buy anyone.

Is the money really there anyway? We've been told this many times and it's never been spent.

I would love Sneijder and Nasri but it would cost a fortune. Don't forget Fergie is doing exactly what Sir matt wanted and that is promoting home grown young youth talented players.

The amount of signings we have brought in is irrelevant when none of them covers the loss of Scholes and Hargreaves. Gibson is also on the way out if we are to believe the reports - which could potentially leave us three midfielder spots open.

Regarding the money, andersred wrote this a month ago:
...That leaves this enormous sum as a huge mystery. So don't ask me what our transfer budget is, all I can say for certain is that United have £477m of bond debt and £180m+ of cash available for something.....

Money seems to be there - hopefully for transfers - as Gill has reiterated in the past.

Midfield is our second biggest need this summer (after goalkeeping, done now). A huge need. I don't think we would have gone and spent 16m on Jones if it meant we couldn't bring in a player to help us in our biggest weakspot, which already got bigger when Scholes retired and Giggs aged another year.

Jones is nice, Young is good. But if we don't bring in a midfield player then we've failed in making the biggest step forward we needed ahead of next season. And I can't believe Fergie would think that weakness would just go away. It's been too obvious.

how could we fit both nasri and sneijder into the team as well as rooneh and chicha? would nasri accept playing from the left? would rooney? they could rotate...i think it coyld work...

We have already agreed to sell Nasri to Real in part exchange for Some Guy.

When is Nani going to Italy? I would like a specific date, so I can put some money on it. I think I can get decent odds. We could split the proceeds.

doubt youd get very good odds now, you should have put a bet on when i first told ylu about it.
before august 31st is the best i can give you i'm afraid.

You're wrong.

1. The reserves are not enough to make up the deficiencies in the team (central midfield). Noone moving up from the reserves is ready to take up the mantle.

Hargreaves & Scholes are gone. SAF has sanctioned the sale of Gibson. Giggs is a year older, Fletcher has a virus, & Anderson (no matter how good he is) has an unreliable knee!

2. The money is there - otherwise we wouldn't be making overtures and enquiries for the likes of Nasri & Sneijder.

3. This was all planned. We've been told that the Ronaldo money is still there. SAF ripping this side apart has been predicted for a few seasons and the money is there.

SAF has in the past promoted youth when he felt they were ready to take up the mantel. Last year we won the league and got to the final of the Champions League without a central midfield of great quality. This is unheard of! SAF knew it and we all knew it from the beginning and we were found out.

In order to bridge that gap we need Central Midfielders who are able to go into the World Class bracket very quickly. Pogba isn't ready. Morrison isn't ready. Tunnicliffe has been loaned out to Peterbrough! Cleverley isn't ready!

It's clear we need central midfielders and it is also clear that we're going to do what we can to get them!

Yeah, I think the 'playmaker' tag is unhelpful in this context though. Everybody plays 4231 now so the big distinction is between CMs (Modric) and AMs (Nasri) or players like Sneijder and Fabregas who've played both roles.

May I remind you we have 6 players leaving/left us.

Which isn't as bad as being made out. Hargreaves has had no affect on the team since 08. Scholes only played sporadically last season and like many great players before him you can never replace that only evolve. Gibson for as much as I like him, if he does leave, wasn't at a level were one of our younger players couldn't step in (Cleverly eg) Giggs well we've just purchased Ashley Young. O'shea and Brown, Jones and Smalling more than make up for that. VDS, we've just brought in his replacement. With the likes of Morrison and Pogba coming through, plus we have Carrick, Fletcher, Anderson for midfield as well. As far as I'm concerned we're good to go.

I was about to write the same thing and you beat me to it. We also have more than enough defenders aswell. O'shea and brown didn't get many games last season. So we don't need to replace them. Weve got Rio, vidic, evra, both the da silvas, smalling and jones not including some of the reserves who will make it to the first team.

I really want another midfielder like I said but it all depends on the availability and money. If we can't get one now then maybe we just get the season under way and then try again in the jan transfer window.

jan is just a bad time to buy, no club would want to lose their best player during the middle of the season.

Looks like we have difficulties to attract our main, big name targets and might have to sign a young, unknown midfielder

If United buy Sneijder it will turn out worse then when we bought Veron. Not long back I wanted Sneijder to play for us (very badly) that was when Inter got him for €15million, but now he is older, way more expensive bordering on extravagant (incld. wages) & very injury prone. Plus on average he gives only 8 goals a season.

Modric is clearly the way to go. Its smack in your face obvious. Best suited to play in United's system. May cost as much as Sneijder but his wages will be cheaper and he is younger and PL tested.

Your King Muppet status is about to be revoked

Modric isn't a better player than Sneijder, but he'd be a better fit.

Gutted that we won't even at least attempt to get him.
