Delighted with Sammer but pretty miffed Hierro lasted that much longer, more so because he just sat there on my CB list looking back at me and rolling his eyes that he had been rendered a complete misfit.

I said all along I wouldn't pick anyone I couldn't fully trust for the job at hand. The actual job, not "he is a CB therefore can stick him at CB".

Thanks to @Isotope I'm getting perilously close to that point here (unless I take the piss out of the concept) so no-brainer really.

Did someone butcher him in some draft? I'm staggered he didn't get picked for so long. Not a fanboy but it sure used to be the case that every man and his dog was. I was even surprised @Isotope didn't go for one but TWO defenders ahead of him. Yes, I know he has Kaká, still would have picked him a few years ago.

Will probably get injured, should have got him in R1 or R2.

Joking aside, top player on his day, can think of a few with similar issues. Is it credible to say he could put in a shift at CB? Sure. Was I going to get anywhere near that debate? No chance.

Lots of borderline cases going, will largely depend on how they are being portrayed I guess.

Around 250 games from 92/93 season on for club and country.
PFA Players' Player of the Year in 92/93 when Villa finished second.
Excellent at the World cup in 94 producing an all time great performance vs Baggio led Italy.
2 League cups won with Villa in that period and in that three years period 92-95 he played 143 club games, and was averaging 8-9 games for Ireland in those years.

I'd say his peak was 90-94.

Plenty of highlights also from 92/93 Villa season and also in the 94 WC performance for everyone to make a judgement :)

I'd actually agree with that. Some players peak late, more so when they leverage their experience. When I started running out of worthy right-side CBs I revisited my "nobody I knew in the 80s" condition and added him and Bergomi.

Not even remotely interested in having a nostalgia draft match soiled by a stupid argument though so was only going to go there if I ran out of options.

:D True. Years ago, i'd have Kaka -Totti - Figo behind a striker. Screw any tactic and such. Now I'm older, I become more conservative like Ole. Safety first.

Maybe the uncertainty about his best role? Tbf I probably should’ve picked him ahead of Dunga, but in the end decided to test my luck considering the depth of the attacking pool.

There are certainly quite a few attackers picked before him that I rate lower though.

Fair point that, it's actually another reason I never picked him. I like whatever the players on the teamsheet will be doing to jump at you. I don't really get that with him and I'm nowhere near as articulate as Gio when it comes to that. I actually skipped him on the basis if him and Hagi were still around the guy I actually want would likely last the turn. Now getting the jitters, of course.

Eh? As far as this is concerned if any of Vidal, Matthäus or Rijkaard feature as B2B CMs I'll have Simeone down as the better player. No two ways about it.

Gio explained what his plans are for Rijkaard and as far as Matthäus is concerned I quoted the passage in the OP which quite clearly is based on him as sweeper!

I wouldn't mind it if he gets some leeway and gets to repick. A silly mistake but would suck to lose a 5th pick because of that. It's nostalgia draft after all so I guess we can play nice?

Only really a problem in his second season (but still scored 13 in 18 games and continued his sensational 09/10 form). In his first season he genuinely could have won the Ballon d’Or, think he surprised everyone with how much he turned it around after leaving Madrid.
