Nicolas Otamendi | City Player

I reckon Ramos is the better player of the two, but I actually think I would prefer Otamendi to partner Smalling. It would give me a bit more confidence having more of a warrior type next to him. Hopefully we can make this happen.

From what I've seen he looks like a good player, but is he really the leader we are missing? I personally don't think he is. How can he be when he is 27 and he is not more experienced on the big stage than Smalling or Jones? He also doesn't strike me as a ball playing centerback.

I see some here prefer him to Ramos, that's just laughable. I'm guessing most of these people haven't even heard of him 1 year ago and now they prefer him to Sergio fecking Ramos...

Its not about if he's more experienced than Smalling and Jones, its if he's that kind of a player or not, a leader I mean.
Player who's 23 can be more of a leader than a player who's 29 for instance.
I'd prefer Ramos but that looks 'dead in the water'.

Well, yes, but a leader has to be respected by the others. How can someone like Jones respect and look up to him when he is 4 years older and he had only one good season so far in his career? Maybe I am wrong, but I just don't see how he is what we are looking for. I would be very happy to be proven wrong, obviously.

Another perfect transfer for this Summer. I reckon we will almost certainly get one of him or Ramos and Otamendi looks much more likely now.

You're confusing experience with leadership. You don't need to be old or experienced to be a leader. Roy Keane was Forest captain when he was 19

We should just splash on him and force de Gea to stay another year, and try to convince him to stay more as we challenge for the champions league. Otamendi is probably as good or better then Ramos defensively speaking, though ramos is obviously world class. The biggest difference is going forward and on the ball where Ramos is really good, but otamendi would be a huge improvement for us anyway and would be more hungry.

If we buy Otamendi I'm hoping LvG will ease off his obsession with the CB's bringing the ball out. None of the ones we have are any good at it and Otamendi isn't either. If you used the recent Copa America as a 4 game capsule of Otamendi you see he's strong in one on one situations and good in the air, but very limited on the ball. We should have our CB's defend more like Terry and Cahill, win it and drop it off to the nearest CM.

Never seen this guy play.

Is it just me or is he something of a one season wonder?

It may just be my ignorance, but I had never heard of the fella until last season.

A FM wonderkid since his Velez days. At least that's how I know him...

He played in the 2010 World Cup. Won a Europa league with Porto. He isn't a nobody

Forget Ramos. We shoudlnt wait much longer, just get it done, so that he can join in the next weeks after his break.

Looks like the Otamendi stuff is starting to get a run in the media again. Starting to lean more towards him rather than Ramos. Just hope a deal is done soon though. Want them to have time to build an understanding with the rest of the back four.

Absolutely man. Get Otamendi sorted asap - by far the best option for us that we cant miss out on..

Maybe United have an agreement with him that he will come to us, so we're just gettin the price down, but shit changes - just like Benatia was on his way to us one saturday last summer & then was signing for Bayern on the Sunday because Martinez got injured & was out for the season..

I'd prefer Ramos given the option but I certainly wouldn't mind Otamendi /understatement

Thanks for the additional info.

I had no idea he was that established.

He has been around for a while, but has always been too error prone to be considered anywhere near the top tier of CBs. That changed last season though, when he was absolutely fantastic. He's not the best on the ball so doesn't automatically strike me as the type of defender Van Gaal would favour; if United go for him I'd assume it's because we're prioritising experience in that position at the moment.

always preferred otamendi to ramos.

ramos might have done it at the highest level, but he got some issues such as his temper (those red cards) and occasional brain fart moments. he will come out with winning goals in big games though such as the CL final and so on but we need someone like vidic, a monster inside his own penalty box. i kind of agree ramos is probably better inside the opponent's box compare to his own.

not that i would say no to ramos but it seems he will stay at madrid now after hugs with perez and rafa, i kind of relieve and hope we'll go all out for otamendi now.

otamendi, like vidic is very good in the air despite him being something like 2 or 3 inches shorter than average defenders in europe. he is also pretty quick and i think he will compliment smalling perfectly. he'll cost 35 million just like ramos would and he is about 2 years younger which is great.

I'd be surprised if we were the only big club interested if he is available
Based on some current tweets, CFC & MCFC are interested. Don't see that they really need him like we NEED him, though. Figure most of the top tier clubs are rather set with their CB's while we're in more need than most, plus the EPL clubs are seemingly throwing their financial weight around (partly due to the euro vs pound disparity), so it's not likely the big teams will get into a bidding war for a less than world class player. Not that Otamendi isn't good, but then again, who can you really agree to being a world class CB?

Are City that set really? Kompany has looked very flawed at times recently, Mangala looks very raw (and a club like City won't worry about the amount they spent on him if they decide he's not up to it), and Demihcelis is old and only meant to be backup... the fact he plays as much as he does says a lot.

Which leads to your final point, I guess. Otamendi may not be one of the greats, but there are very few centre-backs, even at the top PL clubs, who are. Now Rio & Vidic have gone, we're basically down to Terry, who hasn't got long. The likes of Cahill and Mertesacker are very good, but they're hardly greats.

It was idiotic spending so long getting Ramos a new contract at RM, and in the process allowing City and CHelsea into the race for Otamendi

Think I said before that I was surprised Chelsea werent in for him. Tends to be them that go for the quality players around his age at european clubs and he'd be good moving to the future without Terry

Think we'll buy a new CB next summer rather than this one. I'd be surprised if we spent huge on one and wind up with Cahill on the bench.

Maybe he is a late bloomer (like Godin).

I would prefer Ramos but that is mainly for his leadership and for his on the ball abilities. Defending wise, Otamendi is as good, if not better.

Our tit for tat game with Madrid over DDG and Ramos (if that is what we're doing) will be pretty undermined if we go out and get Otamendi. I wonder if we're just making sure the Ramos deal dies out completely before pursuing this.

City need a CB as much as we do, if not more.

I'm guessing the reason many clubs aren't interested is his 50m euro buy out clause. If valencia were to accept a lower fee, you may find likes of Chelsea and city becoming interested again.

I'm guessing mata may be used to help bring price down.

Otamendi also scores a good amount of goals. Not on Ramos level, but certainly not bad for a CB.

And this was a beauty:

I think by now Madrid have a pretty good idea of what it will take to sign De Gea, which is why there are no further 'leaks' regarding his presentation etc. By now we should also know where we stand with Ramos and so there should be movement, one way or the other, in this deal.

With Ramos looking out of the picture and Madrid "out of the running" we should be going all out for this guy...
