Maybe. It is imperative though to get a CB soon. We need to start the season strong and we have UCL play off which can destroy our season.
I don't trust to start the season with the CB we have. It can be a disaster.
I'd be more excited about this guy than any transfer we've made this window. He's the real deal.
Is he having a medical yet?

For all we know Ed is working on getting both Ronaldo and Messi for a free, and they had their medicals tonight.

Based on our defensive record in the last 2/3 of last season, I don't think that's true.

He's been linked to us constantly and calmly, the articles have been much the same as the tone and pace of the Schneiderlin articles. I suspect it's in the bag.
Why hasn't he had his medical yet?
We're not rushing it because he cannot go to the US with us anyway as he only left Copa America last week. I reckon once he gets back we will get this underway so we have him in time for season start.
I hope the delay is just because we're waiting to resolve the De Gea issue or because he's on holiday after Copa America.
Same reasons Schneiderlin took so long I guess. Who knows what's going on behind the scenes.
I'm thinking we're also waiting on Ramos, though that may be all smokescreen. I'd be pretty surprised if we got both.

We really don't need both. Smalling deserves to be a starter, and he'll go on to be our captain as long as he stays injury free.
Schneiderlin took like two weeks from the first rumour.
That's a big if though man & reason why we should buy 2 top class CB's now, rather than delay it.
Jones gets injured quite alot also & he's not a top-tier / United player anyway. If we wanna clean up - we'll need top-class CB's. Smalling is the only one we have that can quantify a starting spot out of all our CB's & that's not good enough for a club our size & a club with our ambitions..

Smalling shouldn't get replaced as a starter this season. And Jones & Rojo might still improve. I'd only buy 2 if we're selling Evans & Jones. But even then, not some automatic starter like Otamendi/Ramos, but rather with someone like Stones.
We definitely need 1, but I think 2 would be overkill for the next season.
That's what I mean, he's not going to sign during the Copa, and he'll go on vacation afterward for at least a week more like 2 or 3, so he was never going to sign by now.
Everyone has probably already discussed his, I haven't been in here much so sorry if this is a needless repetition.
Are there better players out there than Smalling? Yes! Do we want to clean up again? Yes! Its a no-brainer to improve on what we have & we cant rely on Smalling to be fit for 1/2 a season - same as Jones.
Really tired of hearing that word "overkill". Folk have been spouting that word with regards to us signing 2 CM's. No mention of it now though..
No not at all man & no need to apologise either. Its a fair point you make & it's always reasuring that we all have the same outlook on this Otamendi deal. He's on hols & it'll get sorted afterwards.. Hope so anyway
Meh, no need to go all out galactico, when we already have an excellent (with potential to improve even more) English defender.
Good defender he is alright & improving too, but he's the best we have & one good CB is not enough man - 2 isnt either. I can see Carrick playin CB soon enough though, which i'm pretty sweet with..
This is the next fella we need in. Get him and we're looking rosey at the back and the middle. We'd be one striker away being very competitive imo.
So, if we're to sign one more, that's 3 good defenders in your eyes: Smalling, Carrick plus signing. Would you want another to that?
we really have been spoilt this trasfer window....But yeah we still need a defender and possibly a new goaly if De Gea goes. Otamendi would be my first choice and i'm sure he'll settle in well with the spainish speaking players in our quad. With him being on holiday now we might not see much movement this week. Does anyone know when he's back from holiday?
If we bring Otamendi in as well... Imagine showing up to Stoke away with him, Bastian, Morgan and Fellaini like yeh.. we're here to play ball.
You gotta have atleast 4 CB's that can compete for a starting berth man & to have as back up for injuries & loss of form; so yeah another one would have us sorted big time.
If we bring in 2 - we'd have 5 CB's in total: Smalling, Jones, Rojo + the 2 additions. I dont rate McNair as a CB btw.
That's a good number of CB's to have & as we all know too well - Smalling & Jones have a checkered injury record over the years, so we cant rely on them to be fit & quite alot of the time - they've been injured in the same periods too.
As regards to Carrick droppin into CB - not so sure that will happen this season, but its on the cards imo.

Well we're not gunna have Rafael marking Drogba at the front post again that's for sure (mainly cause neither are playing in our league next season but the point still stands).This. With him our first 11 looks premier league challenge material. But as you say, another striker needed too for a squad that's going to challenge.

So I take it you have no faith in Jones, Rojo, McNair, & Evans?
Smalling + new CB as starters, and the above bunch (I guess we'll sell Evans) is more than enough. They're all young and they'll get better, and if not we can reevaluate next season, but getting 2 starting CBs really is "overkill", if you like the word or not.
