Probably, but it is only as cover when others need rest or are injured.

People make such a big deal out of it, if we do sign him it's bound to happen anyway at some stage.

I doubt that...when last has he played RB for Madrid?

You don't?! He was brilliant last season for a 20yo kid. That game against Chelsea....
Other times he was awful. Yes he is young, but we need to hitting the ground running. We need experience in that defence, not some snotty nosed kid that needs baby sitting through games and is hauled off in others, therefore wasting a substitution. Smalling and Jones are not experienced enough to do that. They are still learning themselves. Rojo cannot do it as he can be hairbrained and Evans, don't get me started on Evans. Blackett is a middle of the table defender, maybe even lower than that I'm afraid.

Just because a player is young, doesnt mean you stop lookin at their attributes. I dont see a CB in him. He's good in bringing the ball out of defence, but i dont see him as being a long-standing CB. Compare him to Stones & you'll see what we need with players at that age.

He's a RB imo - but needs a helluva lot of work..

My sentiments exactly DT..

He started as a midfielder, maybe Carricks replacement? Ducks down behind the sofa.

No need to duck down with me man - i've seen him play CM for the Academy & the Reserves & he looked very comfortable there.

He's a ball-playing roving type, with a good range of passing too, but he's not someone that's suited to the CB position imo. His strengths are best suited to making things happen - not tryin to prevent them right in front of our keeper.

How long are Jones and Smalling gonna be learning for btw? Smalling is 25 already. And yet if you go into the Ramos thread he's already past it at 29.

I guess Ottamendi hits the sweet spot in between the 2....

You can't really count Smallings age yet. Remember he was a very late starter and didn't come through any teams youth system. If Jones doesn't learn something this season, not sure he ever will.

In the long run, Otamendi is a better bet for me.

Firstly, our defence has been shite at times this year. We need a natural, no nonsense, Vidic type defender to shore it up and make us hard to score against first and foremost. A ball playing centre back is a bit of a luxury right now, especially when you give up something in the defensive aspect.

Van Gaal is here for 2 more years and I'm not convinced the next manager, especially if its Giggs, will be as obsessed with having these types of defenders. An Otamendi type defender is always useful.

According to his agent, Real Madrid have enquired about Mustafi, Otamendi's defensive partner at Valencia

He was meant to be excellent today... This is no-brain signing for me. Feck Ramos. This guy has a point to prove, Ramos is only looking for a better contract, not a new challenge.

Although Columbia rarely threatened, when they did get forward Otamendi was ever-present to snuff out the danger. He was really good in the air, was a threat at set pieces and provided leadership. I, too, really hope we sign this fellow. He'd improve us tremendously. Ramos wouldn't be half bad either, of course...

I am reading this nodding my head. I want a defender first and foremost.

First time I've ever really paid attention to Otamendi in a game, given our supposed interest, and I was very very impressed. Looks solid as feck, nothing got past him

This is what I want to be reading about our defenders. Right now I don't care how good they are going forward or passing to our midfielders. I'm sure Otamendi is more than capable of the latter anyway.

So where does all this leave this fella? Wasn't the talk was that he wanted out of Valencia for sure and there was a done deal with someone?

He wants out, but nothing of a done deal i think. There were rumours months ago that we agreed terms with him, from Argentinian paper Ole. But think they backtracked on that lately.

I've not watched much of Otamendi, but from what he's been described as, it seems as though Ramos would a more ideal player to play alongside Smalling/Jones/Rojo.

Why not both?

Ramos
Otamendi
Smalling
Rojo
Jones

I don't think there is a team in the world with 5 centrebacks and 2 youth players for 2 positions. If 3 centrebacks are injured again van Gaal will use the youth.

Rojo can cover left back, and LvG has spoke about Jones playing in other positions.

Real or City would be my guess. If we do end up getting Ramos.

If we sign MS and a RB Jones won't play other positions. That LVG statement was generic, based on things that have happened before he managed united. He didn't once play Jones in a different position last season. Even when Valencia was unavailable he played McNair at RB

From the latest reports looks like Mustafi to Madrid while Otamendi's future decided after Copa America.

Would be interesting because Otamendi looks a better player in every area. I'm not sure Mustafi is even ready to be the main man at Valencia after Otamendi leaves, let alone step up to replace Ramos at Madrid

Perhaps Perez is looking to refresh the squad with some youth while they still have Pepe from more experienced defenders plus they already signed Danilo this year.

After Copa America things will get even more interesting.
