Valencia had two conditions to let Nicolas Otamendi leave them this summer. One was that a club, Manchester United or anyone else, paid his €50m termination clause. The other was that the player told them he wanted to go. The €50m condition has yet to be met and it appears that arguments about that could go on all summer, but the latter has already happened according to the player himself.
Otamendi hadn't wanted to talk about his transfer situation whilst with Argentina at the Copa America, but he was always going to be asked and it was always likely that something would slip. Therefore, Otamendi had been avoiding the press like the plague but when placed in front of an ESPN camera he said, according to the wonderfully named
Diego Lopez Gomez "
I support the words of my agent and have told Salvo my intention."
Salvo? He's Valencia's CEO. The words of Otamendi's agent were clear to say the least, with Eugenio Lopez saying to SER Deportivos Radio in May "
Nicolas is comfortable with the VCF and the fans but will have an option to improve his career. Jorge Mendes already knows that Nico wants to leave the VCF. Nico will do everything possible to get it... he will do everything possible to leave."
Asked if he'd spoken or would speak to Angel Di Maria about Real Madrid and Manchester United, Super Deporte have Otamendi as saying "Yes it's good, but there's nothing at the moment."
He went on to say he enjoys speaking to several of his Argentina teammates who he considers leaders, such as Lionel Messi and Carlos Tevez.
So, that's one condition of Valencia's met, a move to Manchester United is closer. Now just for the fifty million other conditions.
