If you look into this story is actually quite interesting.

It's actually come from 2 separate Spanish sources. One said we had enquired, the other said we had actually bid. It could be that one is just re-stirring the others' storey and making it sexier. But what makes me think there might be something in it is that how vehemently both articles stated that Madrid said categorically no. They didnt need to print that, or even ask Madrid.

It actually sounds like madrid wanted that part of the story out.

At 110m I'm not surprised they said no - it would probably take close to £100m to get perez to sell bale as he is so personally invested in him being a success he would surely want to turn a decent profit and Varane is probably thought of as the best young centreback in the world so if laporte / ottamendi are valued close to 30 million and Real dont seem to want to sell him you would again need a massive bid to temp them - probably more like the £50m mark - so yeah I think a £110m bid seems to be well under the valuation for two players they probably dont want to sell anyway - If I worked at Madrid I'd probably go to the papers as well but I would leak something extra like its a sign of desperation as they know De Gea is desperate to join us

There will be a link with De gea too. Both underbidding. Both may latest agree to pay bigger price knowing is all the same money anyway, thus nobody loses face

Why would we swap Rojo who has been good for us so far?

More about Rojo and Valencia than us. He's a logical fit there as Otamendi's replacement and he'll be 4th choice at CB and should be 3rd choice at LB if we sign Otamendi and a DM (freeing up Blind to cover Shaw more).

For us, it would reduce Otamendi's cost to a more palatable one than the giant release clause, though we would likely need to buy a new 4th CB, though that could probably be subsidized by selling Evans.

I would never sell Rojo before Evans, whatever the release clause is for he CB LVG wants should just be paid.
Its dire back there....one injury to Smalling and we are right up the creek again.

Caught the tale end of a Sky Sports News item this morning, saying we were very much in for him - anyone?

I think he is the CB who is virtually ours.
Both he and his agent have stated that he wants to leave Valencia and Hummels is staying at BVB.

We want him and he wants us, his release clause is high €50m, but he would shore up the backline and is as tough as nails..IMO he would thrive in the EPL.

Yep & with Schneiderlin/Carrick in front, we could play me in goals :D

Valencia have just signed Rodrigo Caio, known as 'the man who stopped Neymar' for his defensive displays against him. He's also a Brazil U23 and U20 international. Otamendi's replacement?

Is he a centre back? Thought he had been playing right back. I could be very wrong

BREAKING: Manchester United have offered Valencia £25m for Nicolas Otamendi & have offered the player a 4 year deal. [Gazzetta dello Sport]

Probably bollox though
We're obviously after him but it's a bit hard to learn something new during Copa America... unless Rojo and his subliminal ways of communication.

Looks like he's gonna cost us the whole 35 million pounds. Would this be money well spent for what is considered one of the best CBs at the moment.

Just pay it. I've already changed from Hummels to Laporte and now to Otamendi, I'm not changing my muppet target again ffs. Would be nice for Di Maria and Rojo aswell.

Looks like it and Valencia are fully entitled to ask for the release clause to be met.

There were rumors that we had an offer close to £30m turned down last season anyway so what's an extra £5m to us.

Perhaps we can offer them someone like Hernandez/Nani as a sweetener/to drive the price down.

I agree.. I think chicharito as part of the package should be a good deal. They have always wanted him anyway

€30 + Chica seems fair for Otamendi, but it still lands us short about €10m of their valuation.

Last year most people were willing to pay 35m for Hummels, so why not spend it on Otamendi?

I agree the price tag is ridiculous, but what can we do? If Otamendi is who LvG thinks we need we should just pay the release clause. We were in the same boat with Herrera and overpaid for him and I don't think anyone has been disappointed that we did.

The thing is we are desperate for CBs and Otamendi is one of the best available right now. 35m is cheap when considering the improvement he will bring to our back 4.

I read a Google translated article earlier that said "Manchester have offered Valencia for Otamendi".

What a tease :(

He can defend and he isn't a weak passer. Being able to defend at a high a level should count for something.
And it does. However history tells us the best defensive partnerships are between two players who complement each other rather than 2 players who can defend at a high level. We've got our solid, domineering center half, so let's get in someone to give us something different or we're going to be prone to being pressed like we've been for ages.

is he good with the ball,or is he more no nonsense like vIdic? I'd be excited about him and rojo alongside each other with the national team familiarity also! It would be hard to dispose of smalling after the last few months he's a definite starter for me

He is not David Luiz but he is not Terry either, he is in the middle.

Two different CBs do not make a better partnership than two similar and well rounded CBs who understand each others. It's the understanding that make a good partnership not their tool box.

Exactly. And we're constantly touted as the world's richest club, so who is ever going to 'cut us a deal'?
