Every side needs squad players and given how often Shaw is injured I am sure they'll both get plenty of game time.

I think you do need your big players to play pretty much every game, look at John Terry this year playing every minute of the league season.
A back four should be playing every game unless there's an injury.

Time will tell but certainly based on this season Smalling has been superior by a clear margin.
We need to smooth the way with this one by including or loaning one of our players in with the deal, maybe they'd fancy having Rafael, or Herandez for keeps , or Januzaj for a season.

It's because we are talking release clauses which is always more than the market valuation. Now if he was with Sevilla or Villareal he'd be a lot cheaper. But considering Valencia's situation (don't need money, new owner eager to impress fans, new project planning for CL etc) triggering the release clause is the only solution.

just pay the release clause. it is there for a reason and even if we offer them 1 million less they are still going to hold out for the total release fee.
If we are going to pay 50million for a CB then surely he has to be a 50million upgrade and what we already have? This is a massive premium for a guy who has just emerged into the upper bracket this season.

First of all, lets see what happens once the dust settles down. Blind is renowned for taking his time to settle down. At Ajax he was booed and was very close of leaving until he suddenly became a crucial player for them. Honestly I cant see him becoming the DM we need. However as LB he's got a good chance of winning his first team place. Shaw is a bit of injury prone and he had hardly set OT alight hasn't he?
Even if he becomes a utility player, Blind is a much better player than OShea.
