I wonder if Valencia getting the CL spot will change things on this one or if the huge money hike he'd get here will mean he will take the move anyway if we meet the buyout.

Very true. Looked expensive to me, I argued that it was but Ander has completely proven worth the money in my opinion this season
depay's fee is 30 million euros which is just a bit over 20million pounds even after the add ons and that was the first time in quite sometime that we got a very good deal for one of the best young player in the world at this moment.
He's the same height as Thiago Silva, who's by far the standout CB in the past 5 years. Otamendi has a good leap and is bulky/strong enough to handle the physical side of the league.

Something I'm sure I've mentioned, but not recently is that Valencia are not a team you'd expect to defend well based on the last 10 years. In fact a number of years ago they'd have comical moments in their defence time and again, game after game. Back in the days where Raul Albiol and Alexis were their best CBs.
This season is the first time they've all looked convincing at the back and have a very good defensive record. And its the one season that Otamendi has played there. Players like Gaya, the keeper Diego Alves, Mustafi and even young Ruben Vezo who played some matches next to Otamendi in the first phase of the season they have all played well and looked good. But again this all just happens after Otamendi comes in for a season... So perhaps he's even better than I think and thats his influence on his teammates making them feel more assured. Because its a bit of a freak season for Valencia to be one of the top teams in the league with their defending and defensive record. The manager also needs to take credit there

Does he speak english? I think its a huge worry imo. He looks the real deal and im becoming abit obsessed about him coming - if this one doesnt come off id be gutted. But if its true that he doesn't speak any english then a huge part of his defensive ability is null and voided until he can. How is he supposed to orchestrate and organise the back line with three other english defenders?
Why not play him with Raphael, Rojo & Thiago Silva ?
Or LaPorte? Even though he is French, he plays for Bilbao, so I'd imagine he can speak Spanish. This English is overrated. Only joking.

Lopez and Mendes have close links, according to some article I just loosely translated. Getting Mendes involved would help seal a deal. That's what Mendes is about.
Mendes, i suspect is already involved here. He is a very close friend of Peter Lim, Valencia's owner and actually played a part in the club's takeover by introducing Lim to Salvo (Valencia president).
He can chase Bale down and tackle him cleanly.
I like Otamendi but him and Rojo as our only centre back signings under van Gaal would be a pretty poor show.

Indeed and you really don't need two quick centrebacks anyway. It's actually not that often that a centreback has to turn and run back to goal.
