One of the most successfull coaches of modern day football played Emile Heskey up front for England in the World Cup.

In fact, Emile Heskey being played at all, in the Premiership, showcases the fact that being a pro doesn't necessarily make you equipped to judge a player's ability better than the average Joe.

Obviously some players are just clearly better. But what I meant is which is the better player for us? An example would be when we signed Ronaldo or even Nani. I don't remember anybody even knowing about them (until Ronaldo played us) and if you asked anyone on here who we should sign it wouldn't have been either of those two. Most probably would have chose Quaresma or the like over Ronaldo......
Actually there were a good number of us who knew all about them and wanted them here. Thankfully we were right to rate them.

Football is a team game - a less talented player may still fit better than a world class player.

I'd say it shows the exact opposite.

much as Sporting Lisbon's Joao Moutinho did in 2007, and though Moutinho was then linked with a move to united, nothing materialised.

Speaking of who, would not he be a more natural choice for us than Gaitan. Been living up to his potential lately, both for Porto and Portugal.

the irony...

I think its all about opinion. Pros may have a more experienced point of view but even in this case, scouts rely alot on opinion and luck. I mean you can get Messi for lets say 90m and he fail to adapt to the EPL. Is he a bad player? No.

PS: The same Pros saw it fit to spend 35m on Carroll and 9m on Bebe. I doubt that you'll find many rookies who would have agreed to that.

In my original post that started this all off, I actually replied to somebody that was complaining that we are after Gaitan and not Gotze. Firstly, I doubt that poster had watched both of those players enough to say who is better. Secondly, my main point was that if we decided to move for Gaitan then you expect that our alternative options were considered and Gaitan was deemed the best choice. Not to say that Gotze is an option.

There is a lot of research done into a signing (bar Bebe), research that we aren't capable of doing and therefore we aren't in the best position to say who is the best player we should sign. I'm talking about character references etc.

Actually there were a good number of us who knew all about them and wanted them here. Thankfully we were right to rate them.

I was only young when we signed Ronaldo so didn't know much about him previously. Do you have a link to any threads in which Ronaldonwas discussed before our friendly with Sporting?

Nani was a bad example too as we were linked with him quite a while before we signed him. To be fair though chief, you seem to rate most players that are brought up on this forum. I doubt you've even seen most of them either.

I would bet that Real Madrid will sign both Goetze and Eriksen this summer. If they dont sign both of them then City will probably sign whoever remains. Gaitan is probably a more realistic option but even then there could be plenty of other teams after him so its probably best not to have too big a boner over any of these players. Fergie probably isnt interested in any of them anyway if he is serious about developing Cleverley and maybe will buy a defensive midfielder squad player instead!!

Bebe is not the only bad buy though. Diouf, Djemba Djemba, Bellion, Obertan, Tosic were all proven not to be even near to United's quality. I think in this case its more of a hit/miss. A scout thinks that this player may have potential (altough it may be more the case of making money out of it rather then become a first teamer), his price is right and he's signed.

What pros has a clear advantage over fans is inside knowledge. A player may have a hush hush deal with another club making a transfer nearly impossible. Take the Neuer deal. He promised himself to Bayern months before he was actually bought. There's little United could do in this case.

Do you really think we sign players with intention to sell them and make a profit? That makes absolutely no sense and I am not even sure that we've ever made a profit on a player that wasn't our first teamer

I think so. I understand your point of view however one must go in the fee details to see whether we made a profit on a player or not. I mean if we bought lets say player A for a 2.5m fee in which 1m of the deal would be paid only if that players plays 40 games and then after 20 games we sell him for 2m cash then we had made a profit.

It's a beautiful world that you live in where footballers don't earn money.

I doubt that players like Diouf are on a large salary. Dont forget that while they are at Ot they boost our ranks and allow us to rest some key players in non important games.

They are on £500k a year at least, possibly even more in most cases, which basically cancels out any point of buying them to make a profit anyway as we keep them for 2-3 seasons usually.

I've told you already while they are at OT they do bolster our ranks and allow us to rest key players in non important games. Not to forget that when they loaned we dont pay for their salaries + may end up getting signings of fees for loaning them the player

Gaitan keen on United move: Argentina star flattered by Fergie interest

Benfica winger Nicolas Gaitan has urged Manchester United to make a bid for him in the transfer window and believes a move to Old Trafford would benefit the Portuguese side as well.

Sir Alex Ferguson is understood to be keen on the Argentina international after he impressed in the Champions League.

And the United boss has praised Gaitan publicly and the 23-year-old is pleased with the comments and would welcome an approach from the Premier League champions.

Gaitan joined Benfica from Boca Juniors for £37.5million in 2010 and his current deal runs until 2016, but says he would be open to a move to Old Trafford.

He said: 'Ever since the pre-season, it has been said that Manchester United are following me.

'Then, Benfica met United in the Champions League group stage and I did not expect that Ferguson would talk about me before and after the game.

'He said Benfica had good players and named me, which is something that makes me very happy. I did not expect to be praised by a coach like him, we all know what he represents in football.

'I am proud that one of the best clubs in the world want me, but I am only thinking about Benfica.

'If the transfer happens, it has to be good for Benfica and myself.'

"The sale of players is the priority for Benfica but only if it is helping the club.

"Our aim is to break even and make around 50 million euros in the summer through sales."

It is understood that Benfica coach Jorge Jesus has been told that Gaitan is to leave in the summer.

They are also expecting to lose Paraguay striker Oscar Cardozo and Argentina defender Ezequiel Garay.

Gaitan could leave Benfica | Sky Sports

He's most probably leaving in the summer, but with City in the mix, question is if it's us who will get him.

Nicolas Gaitan insists he is not thinking about leaving Benfica in the summer amid speculation the Portuguese giants are ready to sell the Premier League target.

Title rivals Manchester City and United have long been linked with a move for Gaitan, who impressed against the Red Devils in the UEFA Champions League this season.

He is rated in the €30million (£25.1m) category by Benfica and the club recently hinted that the Argentine could be sold at the end of the season to raise funds.

Reports in Portugal claim United had a scout watching the midfielder during Benfica's 4-1 home win over Nacional on Saturday evening.

Gaitan was asked about the rumours concerning his future after the match and the 23-year-old stressed he is happy with life at Benfica.

"Manchester United were in the ground to watch me?" Gaitan told reporters.

"I am content here and now I am not thinking about leaving the club in the summer.

"At this moment I am happy in Benfica because I enjoy being on the pitch. When anyone leaves a club it is because it is not a happy situation and that is not the case with me.

"I repeat that I am calm, although it is normal that, at the end of the season, Benfica will study my situation. It is necessary to wait."

This rumour wont go away, i reckon there is something in this and wouldn't be surprised if we've already argreed a fee with Benfica.

This transfer reminds me a bit of the De Gea transfer during the end of last season plus he fits in terms of age /value compared to the likes of Sniejder.

The two Benfica fans in work were raving about him and Rodrigo today after last night match.

Shame Garcia didn't play as the Portugal press seem to think we went over to scout him as well as Gaitan.

.....

Post of the decade?

I mean seriously, in hindsight, has a post ever been so wrong?

Just to top it off that spelling error made it seem like he was seriously suggesting that we sign the hunchback of notre dame to replace Giggs.

Oh, and just because it's fitting:
