Nicolas Gaitan

I'll admit I've only seen him play ~4 times, but what I've seen I do like. He isn't just a winger as people are saying, but he isn't a traditional central midfielder either. He seems more comfortable with the ball at his feet.

I'm kind of concerned though. I think nearly everyone has accepted that, if there is a problem that needs to be fixed in midfield, it is that we need to sign a creative midfielder. This is true; and it certainly seems a problem that could be fixed by Gaitan. From my point of view though, I think with Fletcher and Hargreaves we have lost two influential and game-dominating midfield generals. The kind of players who get a team going through sheer determination and grit. I think this is something United have, recently, lacked. If we manage to break a team down, United have generally then sat on their laurels and allowed the opposition to come at them. I hate that; if you go one up, you should be trying to kill the team off from that point on (depending on opposition, but for the likes of Wolves etc, of course).

When Keane left, a lot was made of an issue similar to this, and eventually it blew over as other senior players came to the fore and took over his mantle. When Keane left, however, there were a number of senior players capable of doing this. I think this is less true now, making the need for an influential midfielder greater. I also think this is something that can only effectively be done from central midfield where you can dictate the pace of play and attack completely. Looking at the team, there is Ferdinand, but there are question marks over his long-term fitness, Vidic is out, Giggsy is a legend, but a quiet one and unable to play every match, Rooney and Evra aren't influential enough, and both are too immature and lash out too frequently IMO.

That doesn't leave much, so in my view I think an older, stop-gap, influential midfielder for a season and a half would be just the ticket. Gaitan does not look to be this, though he still looks like a great player.

Just my two cents.

People seem to forget who we are. I don't particularly remember Cesc Fabregas having good games against us, but nobody doubts his class.

It's alot harder to shine when you don't have the players around you against the highest quality opposition. Hence the reason we were all over Ronaldo in a flash.

If this turns out to be true I think it validates all the reports that we were in for Sanchez last summer, a player who can play centrally or on the wing and has an eye for a pass.

United doesn't (with one or two exceptions) buy stars, we make 'em.

It's part of the tradition and heritage of the club.

A proud one too.

Why do people change that?

This is almost like a battle cry in these type of threads despite us having broken the British transfer record a few times, but I've always wondered do players like Ronaldo, Rooney and Nani who we bought for huge fees as teens and were raw materials count?

Why just a stop gap? why not buy a younger (24/25) and class CM of that type and Gaitan to add creativity in the final third?

I'm not convinced, afterall we did apparently have a deal for Young wrapped up before summer who also fits the above criteria.

Javi Garcia is also linked in with this Gaitan story so it may be worth waiting to see what happens there.

Yeah but we'll still have Young if we buy Gaitan in the summer, which makes me think Fergie wanted more than one of that type of player, when we didn't get Sanchez, Gaitain became the next one to catch his eye.

I'd much prefer it was Javi Martinez but in fairness I've not seen a lot of Garcia, just when I have seen him he's never stood out.

Could it be that this is what SAF's has in mind for next season?

Nani(Valencia)--Carrick(Garcia)--Clev(Ando)--Gaitan

-------Hernandez(Welbeck)----Rooney(Young)----

Lets just hope he doesn't turn out like the last £30 million Argentine we got.

Ideally, I'd like to give the young 'uns every opportunity to develop, so a stopgap for a season or two, giving time to Pogba and Cleverly to come through and Gaitan to gel would, in my view, be perfect!

Wouldn't say no to a 24/25 year old, mind you! Problem is finding a midfielder who can play the role. Not many around.

Its Javi Garcia mentioned in the story, his teammate at Benfica

Daniel Taylor saying the same as Ladyman now. Think they have ignored his agents comments last night though.

To be honest, I rarely notice opposition players unless they somehow really stand out. I probably wouldn't notice someone passing it neatly and keeping things ticking against United even if he had a good game. I would notice someone going past 3 United players or scoring a goal. It's just how it is, I've noticed. I focus all my attention of us when we play so only something out of the ordinary from the opposing team players really catches my attention.

@DTguardian
Gaitan: would add that sometimes press are misled deliberately. But info today very clear: i.e. there has never been any interest #mufc

I hope its Garcia we are after, was impressed when i saw him play. Strong tactically minded and good technique. Would solid up our midfield.

I would like to see those players develop as well but when I look at their games I don't think they offer the type of option we are talking about. Cleverley is an exciting creative attacking midfielder and Pogba has some nice passing, but if we want a leader in there to dictate I don't see either in that mould.

That's true, they are becoming an expensive commodity like strikers.

This was obviously just a cover for another transfer we concluded in those few days that this rumour was about.

If he's a winger then it'd be a weird move as we just bought a £15m winger on a huge contract last Summer, and the other wing is pretty much reserved by Nani for a long time. If he's more like Silva or Mata then it could be a good buy, we'd most likely have to switch to 4231 with Rooney up top, which would limit the amount of chances Welbeck and Hernandez would get.

All in all, I would much rather see us buy a central midfielder.

Worst case scenario. Unless he's in to replace Fletcher for the foressable

He's exactly the type of midfielder we're well stocked in if everyone is fit

I would rather have Eriksan over him, by next season he would of gelled right in because of his age and by next season we would be firing in all cylinders!

To be honest, if we deny it, it seems something maybe going on. We very rarely comment on transfer stories. We denied De Gea coming in the summer didn't we?

Fergie did deny it for a long time and then he confirmed it at Neville's testimonial but then everyone had to deny it again as De Gea hadn't switched agents at that time.

Well, this lad is said to be able to play centrally as well. With Giggs, who's our most similar player of this ilk, coming towards the end and even the possibility of Park leaving (just talk, but still) that would leave us with four realistic wide options: Nani, Valencia, Young and then a Gaitan who can also do the Giggs role centrally.

I don't see it as very far fetched that we'll sign a player of his type, even if the speculation about Gaitan specifically's been rejected.

Twitter stuff from journos is not worth anything as we well know, the club saying the stories are untrue could well be down to trying to put off any other clubs who are interested since the deal won't be completed until the summer.....or everything about Mendes being involved and the quotes from his agent were made up.

Cue Gotze at the airport sightings!

Portugal's Record reports Gaitan to Man Utd deal is agreed, regardless of United's denial. Record known to have very strong sources at Benfica.

Record says Benfica has a "gentleman's agreement" with United for Gaitan for the end of the season, and that United had wanted him in Jan.
