Nicolas Gaitan

Abola, a portuguese newspaper reporting that we have a gentleman agreement to sign him and its almost guaranteed that we will sign him.

Nani's contract expires in June 2014 so you'd imagine he'll either sign a new contract with us this Summer or will leave.

I never realised that. We might want to keep him for another year and try to extend his deal during that period, he will likely hold his value above £15m even with one year to go on his deal.

I've had a feeling for a while that there was some substance to this. I got questioned when I said this last time, but there was a lot of detail in the past stories including agents, fees and us having watched him for a while. Did anyone else get that feeling? Jorge Mendes is involved too which is usually a positive sign too.

Considering Young held his value at 17 million, he better bloody well hold his value!

Ialso think the same, got a feeling that it's similar to the Young and De Gea deals where everyone knew that we are gonna sign them.

It is guaranteed that a given Gaitán leave Benfica at the end of the season with Manchester United almost certain to be the destination, as the incarnate already have an agreement with the Red Devils, although the club did not close the door Light the other negotiations if the offer is better. But his resignation did not care about Jorge Jesus, who believes he has the squad his successor: Enzo Perez.

Indeed and Nasri was well above £20m. Then again you have someone like Ozil who went for less than half the price because he was in his last year.

Let's just sign Nani up and not worry about it. I'm not a huge fan of this new Glazer contract policy to be fair. I know it saves money in the short term but surely it gives the player more negotiating power when they have such little time left on their contracts. It also means that we are likely to lose a few players that may have been otherwise avoidable.

The Nasri deal was an aberration as there was competition between two immediate rivals of Arsenal for him. If he'd gone abroad, as Nani likely will if we sell him, the price would have been significantly lower.

Maybe this season was the extra year though after he'd asked to leave last Summer?

And with two years left on his contract we could reasonably expect a £30m+ transfer fee as opposed to the £15m-£20m with one year left.

Did he ask for a transfer last Summer?

First I've heard of it.

To be honest it'd be worth the £10-15m hit for one more season even if he was thinking about leaving.

Nani has nearly 30months left on his contract, I don't think he wants to leave and I think he'll sign a new one when the club offers him one. Regarding Gaitan, again he's not a winger as people have convinced themselves.

Despite coming up short at home and in Europe, there were a number of bright spots for Benfica during 2010/11 – and Gaitán’s development was undoubtedly foremost among them. The presence of his compatriot Pablo Aimar means that he has been fielded out wide (a natural left-footer, switching flanks is an integral part of his game), in both a 4-4-2 diamond and lately a 4-2-3-1 formation, with much of the creative burden falling squarely on his slender frame.

However, unlike his predecessor Di María, Gaitán is no touchline-hugging speed merchant, though he does possess an above-average turn of pace. His supreme dribbling skills and technical ability make him a danger in central areas too, and his tendency to drift inside before delivering a pinpoint cross or shot is essential to Benfica’s easy on the eye, high-tempo style of play.

Long term, there is little doubt that were Benfica to hang on to Gaitán, he would eventually move inside and replace Aimar, who has yet to agree a deal beyond his current one, which expires in June 2012. However, the economic circumstances of the Portuguese Liga are such that even the most successful clubs are compelled to sanction the departure of at least one asset per summer transfer window. As well as United (who have been observing his performances at the Luz since this time last year), Gaitán has been linked with the likes of Paris Saint-Germain, Inter and Valencia, and while Benfica look well placed for a profitable season both on and off the pitch, there is no doubt that after the sales of David Luiz and Fábio Coentrão, he is the next in line.

This is from a guy won has actually seen him play, seems like a Silva type player to me.

With how our club finances are IF we were to bring in someone like Gaitan I could certainly see someone like Nani leaving, which would upset me to be honest.

Just like when we spent 50m in the summer and one of our key players left, oh wait!

You're all clowns for even talking about the possibility of Nani leaving, he's said time and time again he loves it at United. He's not going anywhere for a very long time

Every year there's a Sneijder, Nasri or wonder kid who has apparently agreed terms and is 100% certain to sign, and then we are left like sobbing Jews at Christmas with Uncle SAF mumbling about 'No value' as he goes out to the pub

I see some differences between Gaitan and Sneijder

a) Gaitan has the right type of agent. The same person that represent De Gea, Nani and Anderson

b) Gaitan plays with a smaller side while Sneijder is probably one of the most paid players in the world

c) Gaitan comes at the right age.

If Sneidjer had come here last summer, then his age would not have been a problem as well.

Didn't they say that about Sneidjer last season. In fact that one Dutch journalist was so confident we would sign him towards the end of the window.

If the media was to be believed, the major stumbling block regarding Sneijder was his salary. His current salary was likely to go beyond our wage structure limits. I doubt that Gaitan is paid that much.

Well according to SAF's criteria (the 'value' argument) Sneijder's age was not....ideal.

If you care about my opinion, I think that SAF wanted an experienced head who would have added quality to the side and shielded Pogba and Clev from becoming too exposed. Sneijder would have suited him fine and SAF thought that through the backing of our Dutch guys + Inter's financial problems + Sneijder being played in awkward positions he was able to convince him to lower his salary demands and lure him in. Unfortunately it wasn't the case. I sometimes doubt if Sneijder was truly 1st priority or if he was backup for Nasri.

I think with the Sneijder rumour there were not wrong, eventually he decided against taking the pay cut and Inter sold Eto'o for big bucks.

You'd be upset because the club replaced a player who no longer wanted to be at the club with someone who does?

You are the one stating there may be a possibility that Nani doesn't want to stay and could conceivably have asked to move on last Summer.

All based on sweet FA.

Of course people would be upset if Nani left, there has been no indication whatsoever that he is going to move on, just made up theories of yours.

Re-read. He is clearly implying that having to sell a player to buy one is the situation he'd be upset with.

What position does Rodrigo play?

Striker. Fabulous young player, I think he'll be a world class.

How do you rate Gaitan?

I don't think he's near the values being quoted. He's talented, but hasn't performed very consistently this season. I don't think he'd get many starts at United at this phase. Who knows how he'd evolve there though...

So, is this on then?

I think it rings pretty true.

Position we need: Creative midfielder (albeit from a wider position but capable of playing in the middle)

Targeted nice and early, get the deal in place well before the transfer window opens and any other suitors (City) can get their bids in.

Jorge Mendes who we clearly have a great relationship with, handles the player.

I think he'll be our main signing come the summer but then I know as much as anyone, probably less.

really interesting bit about Rodrigo, wasn't he on loan at Bolton last season?

Apparently we're after Javi Garcia, Gaitan and Rodrigo. I don't think Gaitan will go anywhere near his release clause, think he'll go for 18-20m but that's just my estimation.

It's not as simple as that though is it? If Nani wants to leave and has refused to sign a new contract then he'll be sold this Summer providing the club he wants to join offers an acceptable transfer fee.

DOes he want to leave? Has he refused a contract?

Yes, he was on loan to Bolton last season, but at only 19 years old I don't think he played much.

This season he already conquered a first-team place though, and has been scoring quite a lot lately.

According to my Portuguese Benfica supporting mate, this has been in the Portuguese football press nearly every week, and United scouts are regularly spotted at Benfica's matches.

We're also heavily linked with their other midfielder Javi Garcia, but the Gaitan story seems to have more legs.

I think this deal is like De Gea one i.e I think it'll eventually be go through.
