Nicolas Gaitan

All I can say is we better turn him into a central midfielder. If Modric can do it at Spurs, we can do it with our own play-making winger.

I can see him playing a role similar to Iniesta when Barca playeed in a 433, could be interesting teamed with Cleverley, may well be competition for Anderson.

If he comes, I'd imagine we'd try:

........Carrick
Cleverley Gaitan
Nani Rooney Welbeck

This thread has perked my muppet senses, anyone got a good youtube compilation or FM Stats?

Is this gonna be like the Sneijder or even the Benzema saga in terms will he or wont he...

Modric was a CM being forced to play wide. Personally I like the idea of a wide play maker like him on the opposite flank to Nani.

No. I'm not saying we are signing him or that I want us to. Good player though.

No Gaitan deal is in place

Evergreen Giggs eases Ferguson's latest injury woe - Premier League - Football - The Independent

Manchester United affirmed in the strongest manner possible yesterday that they have not been in discussions with Benfica over the purchase of the Portuguese club's midfielder Nicolas Gaitan. Sources in Portugal have said that a preliminary £29.3m deal is in the offing, though United have taken the unusual step of dismissing the claims and stating that they have not discussed the 23-year-old. Gaitan shone against United in Europe, much as Sporting Lisbon's Joao Moutinho did in 2007, and though Moutinho was then linked with a move to united, nothing materialised.

We need a thread keeping track of our different gentleman's agreements, and then when muppet shit hits the fan, we can just say: "To the gentleman's agreements thread!"

Seems to be a done deal otherwise United wouldn't have taken time to deny it;)

OK, so I've watched the Youtube videos, played the highlights of Benfica Vs United, read the Wikipedia entry. Muppet homework done. Still, I don't get it. I don't get why we'd want him.

I don't get how he manages to get a price tag higher than Ozil or Sahin (including 5 year's wages). The Portuguese premium? At a time when the Portuguese economy is collapsing? OK then, Portuguese comparison: the price is higher than Di Maria's - who was younger, with more experience and a better track record when he went to Madrid.

Of course if he comes to us and does as well as Di Maria did at Madrid, I'll call him a bargain. In fact if he comes to us, even before he plays I'll declare him an excellent prospect, but he's 24 in February, and I don't really get the idea of a 24 year old prospect.

This is one of those times I hope the United denial is not a smokescreen. Benfica and Mendes bigging up a player to get a better fee from someone else?

I can't answer the rest of your post but about the two bolded players. Ozil only had a year left on his contract and wanted to go to Spain, that is why the price was so low. In the case of Sahin he had the £8M buyout clause in his contract which was running down.

That's why I included their 5 year wages!

It is a weird one because from what I have heard he isn't even among Benfica's best players right now.

They are very good at getting a top price for their players. They got more than €100m for Ramires, Luiz, Coentrao and Di Maria.

From what I have seen of him, I don't get why he would be worth anything close to that money to be honest. If he ended up as good as Di Maria, he'd be worth it though.

Seriously, Gaitan 23 Goetze 19 I'd rather put add-on's for Goetze ( Even though the lad seems to prefer the Laliga a bit more ).

I know age is irrelevant, but I still think up to know Goetze has done a bit more in his career while only being 19 so if we were to splash on a youngster, might as well go for the best player out there.

But how do you know who is the better player? When it comes to judging footballers we don't really know our arse from our elbow compared to the pro's. This is why I always find it daft that people complain when we sign one player instead of another.

Judging players is pretty much the bread and butter of everyone who frequents the transfer forum. Except they don't get paid for it.

You seriously don't think Götze is not a better player than Gaitan?

I don't know, not seen enough of Gaitan. I think United will look further into a player than what you just see on the pitch though, it's about character etc also.

Initially I was very excited about Gotze after first seeing him play a few times last season. Ive watched him quite a few times since then and I'm being a bit more reserved in praising him after seeing him play a bit average in a few games against bigger teams.

Yeah, I guess after the Goetze hype, most people have at least watched a few Dortmund matches and that Goetze lad really has been impressive...

I'm not playing down Gaitan as the only person who probably has seen enough of him is Arruda ( Maybe he follows Benfica when he doesn't watch Porto ).

The thing is, at 19 Goetze is already becoming a star in one of the best leagues in the world, while Gaitan 23 hasn't has as much experience yet ( or you can say in Europe they probably have the same exp. ) but I mean a 4 year age gap is something you have to really think about... Imagine Goetze in 4 years time ? He could improve to be twice the player he is now and would be a better investment in a way ( Well in my opinion anyway )...

As saying, if we were to splash money, ala Rooney ( 30m ) I'd rather we go for the best prospect out there and to me I can't see any 19 year olds currently doing the things on the big stage as much as Goetze... ( Haven't been watching much football cuz of my stupid Msc Course )...

So who is the best player out there under 21 ? Worthy enough to splash 39m Euro's on ?

Why can't arsenal just sell Wilshere to us so there won't be so much debate going on

There's no under twenty-one player who any team could justify spending €39million on, no way.

Personally, I don't rate the Bundesliga, specifically some of the lower teams. Though that is for another thread. I think there are a few youngsters now that I would rather have. Wilshere, Thiago and Lucas of Sao Paulo, though I've not seen much of him. But really this discussion is flawed as there are many, many youngsters out there that we aren't even aware of. I've learnt over the years that you can't take anything for granted with these youngsters. There's been many Gotze's that end up taking a back seat to some other player that emerges from nowhere, unheard of to most of us.

That figure is way over the top, but I prefer him to Di Maria already. His record and performances in the champions league are just as good as Di Maria when he's been in form for Madrid. Although Di Maria gives a bit more width and I like that too.

As long as the figure isnt over the top, Gaitan would be an excellent signing on the basis that he's a creative player with a lot of potential. Although they're entirely different types of players, Gaitan has the quality to be another Nani-level player for us.

You seriously don't think Götze is not a better player than Gaitan?

Obviously some players are just clearly better. But what I meant is which is the better player for us? An example would be when we signed Ronaldo or even Nani. I don't remember anybody even knowing about them (until Ronaldo played us) and if you asked anyone on here who we should sign it wouldn't have been either of those two. Most probably would have chose Quaresma or the like over Ronaldo.

These players are extensively watched closely and certain things will be looked for in each player. I could run off a huge list of names I've seen mentioned on here alone that turned out to be duds. Me included, I was convinced Obertan was going to become one of our best players.

I think its all about opinion. Pros may have a more experienced point of view but even in this case, scouts rely alot on opinion and luck. I mean you can get Messi for lets say 90m and he fail to adapt to the EPL. Is he a bad player? No.

PS: The same Pros saw it fit to spend 35m on Carroll and 9m on Bebe. I doubt that you'll find many rookies who would have agreed to that.
