How do you know we aren't trying? He is stalling on contract negotiations and the German press were saying we were seriously interested with competition from Chelsea. Fergie has got in wingers like Ronaldo, Nani and Valencia in the past and if he thinks Gaitan is good enough then I don't know what the worry would be. I think we need 2 midfielders and a left sided midfielder, and whether that actually happens is a different thing but I wouldn't be against us getting him.
He's not first choice but he's on the list and he knows we've got an interest. Depends if we get the h bomb.

I would love us to get Hazard. He would be my first choice, now that Götze has signed a new contract. But if we can't get him, I'd be happy with Gaitan or Kagawa.

Hazard is first choice. Most likely us or city. Other first choice targets are clyne and strootman. We've also regularly watched witsel. We watched gaitan's couple of times months ago and decided not to persue it. The stories are benfica/agent plants to attract offers.

You reckon it would be Kagawa if we don't get Hazard? Haven't seen much of Strootman but he's only 22 and has an impressive 10 caps for the Netherlands.
I don't know if we'll get anyone. Hazard is definitely first choice but if it's us or city he'll probably follow the money. I know we've watched witsel and kagawa and I think what we do is register an interest in a lot of players and see what develops.
I've seen very little of strootman or clyne so can't really tell you much.
The problem we have is that city are still obsessed with a dick measuring contest. We want a player so they pinch him. We agreed a deal with nasri last summer then city blew us out of the water. It's no coincidence that platt and/or Mancini appear to watch a team the week after we have.
And every top club in Europe wants hazard, so if he comes here he'll have chosen us as a club.
Modric always impresses me - could do with getting a few more goals but he hardly ever misplaces a pass, always seems to be available to receive the ball and makes some blinding through balls.
Top player - keeps Spurs ticking when played in his correct position.

He really is the only midfielder i can think of who can do that job, is experienced and knows the ropes in england.

Erm Valencia and Nani are still Manchester United players aren't they? We dont need a 22m backup especially when we've already got an English international and Park as backup (not to forget that Clev, Giggs, Rooney, Welbeck and Fabio can do the job there if needed)
If Anderson and Cleverley end up squad players then they can only blame it on themselves. Take Fletch as an example. At one point of his career Darren ended up 5 choice at United as SAF went trigger happy with new signings Carrick, Hargreaves and Ando (we already had Scholes in his prime and Giggs was nearing his end as a winger). The boy delivered the goods and won his first team place.
We're Manchester United FFS. Players have to deliver or else then end up losing their place. We can't keep on relying on the old guard to deliver the goods while our overhyped kids pass much of their time either in the treatment room or being inconsistent. If you're so good then you deliver the stuff on the pitch and you do it on a regular basis.

I think he has stood out as the best performer for Benfica this season in the CL, maybe along with Cardozo. Seems to be a very good dribbler, and not afraid to take players on and drive his team forward.

Yeah but is it wrong to have 4 excellent wingers - especially when we can use at least 2 of them behind a lone striker ?
Or to put it another way - if we sign Gaitan AND a quality midfielder - wouldn't you be satisfied when the season starts again in august ?

Nope, not wrong at all. that'd be building from a position of strength which is an ideal scenario. But with our issues at CM, shouldnt we be covering up the weakness there first rather than building up an already strong area? I'd personally want us to bag a CM first because i dont see us spending the 30 odd mil that it'd take to get a top CM if we already spend so much on Gaitan.
If we do get both, fantastic. just dont think it'l happen personally.

The Daily Express says United last night denied reports from Portugal that they have reached an agreement with Benfica to sign Argentina winger Gaitan at the end of the season. A club source said they have no interest in Gaitan.
Reports from Lisbon said United had agreed a £38million cash-plus-players exchange, with two unnamed stars heading out of Old Trafford for Lisbon this summer.

'Do we really need another winger?' is what we see a lot here on this thread- he is actually a cam who is on the wing because aimar plays his role- when he was at boca he played cam and last season he played a lot for benfica at cam-if true that the deal is done- i'd expect to see him more in a roaming role than hogging the touchlines.
so is Fergie going to play him on the wing and convert Nani to striker (which wouldn't be a good idea imo) or is Gaitan going to in the center?

My concern of the fee isn't from comparative deals made by the selling clubs it is from comparative inward deals made by our rival clubs. If this deal were to be true then they certainly seem to be buying better than us.
Silva and Mata would have been sensational for us. I am not writing Gaitan off but he hasn't done anything to suggest that he is on the level of those two.
He is worth 5m on his age and potential. If Bebe is worth 7m then damn it Macheda is worth 5m!
Gaitain will be used as he was back in his Boca days (this is after doing some research) He only plays out wide due to Aimar. Well that's what I have gathered anyway. He wont be used as a winger here.
