That's tons of money to spend in order to complete a bunch of four wingers. When everyone is fit, two of them will regularly not be starting.
We have Champions League, FA Cup, Carling Cup, and the League to compete in.
United cannot rely on two starters over the course of a season. Three top wingers like Giggs, Beckham, Blomqvist in '99 is a minimum requirement. You'd like to be able to bring on an attacking player as a sub at the end of matches. If you want to win trophies, then I think you need two players for each position as a rule of thumb. Loss of form, injuries, bringing in younger players behind the experienced ones, etc. etc.
Ashley Young has already shown he can provide backup for Rooney should Rooney pick up a knock, and maybe Gaitan could play there as well. Park, Nani and Giggs have been asked to play up top on occasion. So that's really three positions we're talking about if Berbatov leaves.
Look, whether I'm right or not, I don't understand why when we are buying a winger it isn't simply assumed that he will play as a winger. There is no good reason to think Gaitan is a CM, so to call it a bad buy because he isn't a CM is just plain stupid.
Unless that is you think the club doesn't have enough money to buy a CM as well in the summer which is equally daft considering how much has been spent the past few summers.
I think it is a good sign. Get this buy out of the way, so Gill can focus on getting the right CM which may take a lot of arm-twisting and searching all summer as Chelsea and City are also after the Modric's and Hazard's of this world.
I have a feeling the club are having trouble identifying the right central midfielder. Go too young, and he won't be ready to step into the job. Go too experienced, and he will cost an arm and a leg and may end up like Veron. Go for someone like Modric, and you're in a bidding war with Russian and Arab oil money. Plus Modric has already stated his preference for Chelsea. My hunch is it'll take most of the summer to find out who the best value for money is out of the possible central midfielders out there, so why start getting frustrated before the summer has even started?
