Nicolas Gaitan

i guess we are going to play 2-2-6 formation judging from the rate that we are being linked to every wingers in europe now

I agree we won't bring in two pure midfielders. I also think the two type of players you have mentioned are the sort we need. Can't see us getting two established names, though.
The truth is we don't need established names. The likes of Mvilla, Martinez, Rodwell, Goetze, Hazard and Gaitan are all just potential an seem to be the type we are looking at.

I can understand in signing a playmaker capable of playing on the flanks if needed however i dont see the need of getting a winger. We already got nani, park, young and valencia there and fabio, welbeck, clev and rooney can do the job. Our first priority should be cm. we need 1-2 players there ( a DM to act as cover, competitor for carrick and an attacking midfielder). In my opinion we will revert to a 3 men CM which will make us solid in Terms of creativity and balance. Such Systen will need more more talent in cm.

Until Giggsy retires, I don't think we'll be looking for an attacking minded one... But with OH gone, Fletcher injured... We only need another DM

M'vila and Martinez would be a better prospect for me than going for Gaitan...

However, if SAF is looking to offload some of the current squad members then we shall see again but right now we definitely need someone who can do a job similar to Busquets imo.

We've got the opportunity to listen to Gaz commentate on the Benfica game now - ready to read way too much into anything he says about Guitan :p

not impressed. have watched him a few times this season with Benefica and apart from being a versatile winger who drifts around I don't see why he's hyped as a 30+ million player.

Dives a lot too.

worth it at 10million...definitely not 25+ million. Not even close.

He hasn't looked too bad but hopefully this is all an elaborate blag to entice City to make him their no 1 signing this summer.

I'm convinced we'll never buy another left footed, left sided player.

And if we do, it better not be Gaitan.

He's been very impressive tonight, Benfica's best player by a distance

Di Maria is significantly better than Gaitan. Thats the same Di Maria that can barely get a game for Madrid even when fit. Gaitan is a good player but he aint a great player and, while I know fortune telling is for fools, I cant ever see him becoming a great player.

He was their best player, but that's not saying much.. He created a few decent chances and has a great left foot.

He looks alright but not good enough to be a starter for us considering our options in that position already. Nani, Valencia and Young are better by a distance IMO, I think he would be fighting with Young for third choice winger, which is something I don't think we are looking for.

he also seems to have a good football brain - basing on today's performance.

Went past players with ease. Had a couple of fantastic crosses, although also a few poor ones and his corners were rubbish.

Quite liked the look of him. Was involved in most if not all of Benfica's best bits and comfortable in loads of positions.
Could see him playing inside and down the flanks for us.
However James Ducker of the Times did also say we are not interested in him so maybe it's a non-starter.

He did catch my eye a few times. Got a very good left foot and seems to put in some accurate crosses. I didn't get the feeling he's what we need though. Our wings are strong enough and another player who carries the ball out wide and looks to attack defences shouldn't be on our radar.

We already have quality players (Nani, Young) to cover spaces which Gaitan played tonight.

I have no problems in saying right now he's better than Young.

As for Nani the less he has to be played out of position on the left the better imo

Not play Valencia on the right? Who's one of our most consistent performers.

Well that's the problem isn't it, right now I'd go as far as saying in Valencia and Nani we've got the two best right wingers in world football but I hate seeing Nani's form effected as badly as it is when he's played out of position :(

Exactly...

I don't see how he's an improvement on what we have currently with Young, Valencia and Nani, especially given some of the figures being quoted for him.

At 10 million he looks a good prospect, but 30 million? feck me...for that much we could land a Javi Martinez, and we'd actually get stronger instantly.

If we signed Gaitan it wouldn't be for £30m I can tell you that right now

Or the one who has 6 goals and 13 assists in 21 games this season?

In terms of ability id take Di Maria in a heartbeat

There's absolutely no need for him to come here unless we're willing to let one of our wingers go. Young won't go after a season, Valencia won't go and Nani is unlikely to go as well. We don't need four wingers to compete for two spots, especially if they're all at pretty much the same level.

We don't really need a player to play in the hole, considering that with Rooney in the team we will never play with one of those. We need an orthodox central midfielder or a deeper lying one, but one that also provides creativity perhaps. Schweinsteiger would be perfect IMO but he's never going to go anywhere. We have a few youngsters who could potentially fill the two midfield spots and the two of them (Pogba and Cleverley) are really promising and in a few years time could be our central midfield duo, that's not even thinking about Anderson who has been very good when he has played this season, it is just that when he is injured people often times forget about the good and focus on the bad. We don't need a young midfielder necessarily, because we have plenty of them but I think we need one who is in his prime right now, and who will be in his prime for 2 or 3 more years and then regress into being back up to Pogba/Cleverley/Anderson who will hopefully be ready by then.

Also even though I don't think we need him at all, I think we will end up getting Gaitan. It just has the sort of feeling that the Valencia transfer had, none of us are really excited but there have been loads of rumours. We might need back up for the wings because Giggs is too old for that these days and Park's time I think is done. Saying that Gaitan seems like he is too expensive to be bought as cover, but he isn't good enough to be in over Nani/Valencia, who are just entering their prime. It would just seem like an unnecessary signing if he does come.

The prospect of this makes me wet.

The Times guy seems certain it won't happen. Don't know how reliable he is though.

100% correct. On the left he can still perform, but on the right he is able to cross with his right foot and that seems to add a whole new level of effectiveness and consistency to his game that he can't pull off on the left.
