Nicolas Gaitan

I don't know why but this has the same feel of inevitability as the Valencia transfer. I suspect the deal was done a while back.

From what I've seen he's good but not great. Though I'm open to correction on that.

I agree. I guess we will have to wait to see what the fee is. If he joins for 15 - 18m it would make some sense as, in theory, he should be approaching his peak in the next few years.

How about replacing the player that has made 16 apps, scored 8 and assisted 2.

That's Berbatov by the way.

I guess Will Keane could be promoted or that we will be in the market for either a young prospect or an ageing star capable of 'doing a job'.
Perhaps Ferguson will rely on Welbeck and Hernandez's progress to replace him, with Young or Nani playing off another striker if necessary, or Macheda will come back. I'd keep Berbatov if it was up to me, but I'd be surprised if we bought anyone to replace him. There's no-one whose going to be happy to play the role that Berbatov's playing this season, save perhaps Owen.
SAF likes to have four first team strikers, end of. Owen isn't going to play regularly ever again, so who will take up slot no. 4?
If you're in slot No. 4 you don't need to play regularly. Ferguson's been quite happy to go into a few seasons recently with only 3 first team strikers anyway, 07/08 and 08/09 we only had 3 reliable strikers in the team with other players occasionally shifted into the side, and in 06/07 we only had two with Solskjaer and Smith coming back from injury.

Out of Hazard/Gotze/Rodriguez/Gaitan, this seems the player we're most likely signing... off to youtube.

Since we got linked with him I have followed him as much as possible. I recorded/watched all of Benficas remaining CL group games and watched Benfica playing domestically too.

He's hard to judge at times because I don't think Benfica get him in the ball enough. He has done a few things which make him stand out, like passes that you just would even see that split a defence open, or a dribble that just reminds you of Messi. If he could produce these things more regularly with us, which could be a possibility as he'll get more of the ball etc, then he could be a brilliant little player. I'd definitely be excited to see him play for us based on what I've seen.

If and when he comes, he will have to go through a 'feel at home' period with Nani. Like Nani did with Ronaldo-hookers et al.

I don't see the point in signing any more 'good' players... we've plenty of them.

What we need is a pair of real class players to notch this team up a level so we can at least compete in the CL again with a chance in hell of winning it.

It would be disappointing to see another summer whereby we may good signings but our opposition make class ones

Christ, you can whine a lot. Every thread I see you post in has you either whining or taking potshots at the club.

Lets see how he does against the chavs...

personally haven't seen anything to indicate he's worth crazy money.

Good player - sure. But potential to be a great one? I'm not convinced yet.

There are no agreements to a final transfer for any player.
1h Gonçalo Lopes ‏ @_GoncaloLopes

Although that is not a final agreement to a transfer. Example: If #Benfica accepts 30m€ from #mcfc or other #mufc can equal and buy them

1h Gonçalo Lopes ‏ @_GoncaloLopes
Both #Benfica and #mufc have a verbal agreement on Gaitan and Javi Garcia. That agreement only says that #mufc could equal any other offer

1h Gonçalo Lopes ‏ @_GoncaloLopes Today Record's front page says #mufc gonna offer 25m€ for Benfica's Nico Gaitán. #Benfica will say no to this offe

Am I the only one who thinks that this is a fairly pointless agreement?

Well, I guess it would mean that if someone makes an offer Benfica would ask us if we want to equal it, while without the agreement the deal could be done without us knowing. Other than that, yeah, it's pretty pointless.

I thinks its a safeguard against City. The agreement is that if City puts in a 30million bid, then we match it and they'll sell to us rather than City. It would require us to match and large bid however. It's not pointless by any means.

I actually think that the agent of the player notifies others clubs interested in him whenever there's a bid accepted to get his client a better deal.

Actually it doesn't say anything like that Sky. The only thing it'll do is notify us that it has accepted a bid, which I'm sure the agents of Gaitan will probably do anyway in the situation.

It could have been a case of us wanting to agree a fee but Benfica said no because another team could beat it before the summer. The next logical step would be for us to say 'well could you make us aware of other offers before agreeing to them?'.

We must be very interested either way if we have asked Benfica to do this for us.

Does this guy have a good record on transfer predicitons? Just becuase he seems to be the only english tweeting portugese journalist on twitter it doesn't mean we should believe it. Not a cat in hells chance that we will pay 39 million for gaitian, maybe for them both but not for him alone.

Err, he's just saying what was written in one of Portugal's biggest newspapers, The Record.

Only when we were first linked with him did it mention £39 million. They've never really quoted figures like that since and I doubt they'd even ask for that sort of price. According to todays story, we'll bid £25 million.

All I know is that he was invisible in Benficas last CL game and he was invisible too in Benficas big clash with Porto a week later and was taken off in the 60th minute.

But he was impressive against us. The talent is there no doubt. City will probably sign up Hazard ever since they saw Fergie on TV at a Lille game so Gaitan might actually be available to siGN over the summer.

Since the last CL game he scored two goals in two games and came ON as a sub against Porto in the 56th minute apparently.

Hard not to be 'invisible' when you're not even on the pitch.

According to their forum, Benfica fans would be glad to get rid of him for something like 20 million euros. Read into that what you will.

I hope he's not some overrated CM brought from Portugal, who struggle to score and will pass much of the time in the treatment room.

I love a good in-depth article, £22M seems steep nevermind £40M.

Not to mention that this is the kind of money we would better be off investing in other parts of the team and not on another winger.

Come to think of it Bebe and Obertan are gone which leaves us with Young, Nani and Valencia + Welbeck who seams to be comfortable on the wing. Given our injury record in recent years maybe another talent in that department couldn't hurt.

Oh totally forgot Park but he hardly seams to be a factor in our team anymore.

IIRC SAF made simmilar promises when United wanted to sell players (his early days in the club). Such agreement is a good thing to have in place.

Verbal agreement of first refusal. Could it be more pointless?
All it means is that Benfica have agreed verbally not to jack up their asking price for United. No 'united tax'. The player can still reject the move.
And we do this all the time. We contacted Standard Liege for Defour. We talked to Bruce about Palacios, Valencia and Henderson.
We keep tabs on players.. That is all.

What if the player wants to go to the other club who've made the same bid?

I agree with the previous post - seems pointless - obviously United (or anyone else for that matter) can "match" a bid made by another club?

Why the feck would City want Gaitan when they have Silva and Nasri?

To prevent us from getting him?

Yes, because that's what they've been doing all of this time, isn't it? This whole paranoia about them buying everyone that United wants is cringeworthy.

Who of their squad was even linked with United before they moved there? Silva was but he was also linked with Real Madrid and Barcelona, and possibly pretty much every other big club on the planet. Nasri was but you can't blame them for wanting a proven PL player for a fee that wasn't so big due to his contract situation. He was also linked with Milan, Real Madrid and Bayern during that period.

They've never done anything of a sort yet people talk about it as if it was a fact.
