Oh don't be so Niave. It's been exactly their transfer policy just like it was Chelsea's back in 2003-2006. In doing that they buy a player that we have identified as a quality player and strengthen themselves but also stop us from strengthening. It's a very effective two birds one stone method but there comes a time where it has to stop so the squad isn't overloaded and players find too much competition for spots. That time is surely now in this position.

By the way FAO Mods: any chance the thread title can be simplified? This £39m nonsense is just daft.

Two players, one of whom we wouldn't have got anyway - we tabled two bids for Silva and neither was accepted, a year before he joined City. If we had wanted him enough we would have got him. Nasri would be playing for us but then again he was also identified by other top European clubs, it's not like we picked him out of nowhere.

The rest of their squad we didn't have interest in, or weren't heavily linked with.

As for Chelsea, you could have made a case for more players back then - Robben, Essien and Duff were all wanted by United. Not sure about anyone else.

Yes, him too. A classic example although Mourinho apparently wanted him before too. I probably forgot him because I am actually glad that we managed to get £12m out of that deal given the fact that he's worth nowhere near that.

http://www.mirrorfootball.co.uk/tra...25m-Benfica-Nicolas-Gaitan-article882704.html

The two Manchester clubs are set to wage a £25million war for Benfica winger Nicolas Gaitan.

Both United and City will watch the 24-year-old in Lisbon for the Champions League *first-leg tie against Chelsea on Tuesday.

Gaitan is one of the most exciting talents in the Portuguese league and made a huge impression when he played against United in the Champions League group stage this season. The Argentine cost just £7.5million when signed from Boca Juniors two years ago.

Now, he is worth more than three times that amount. Gaitan – capped six times by Argentina – has a buy-out clause of 40million Euros in his contract.

But Benfica will take a *little more than half of that amount at the end of the season.

Gaitan is comfortable playing on either wing.

“We believe that Nicolas is going to England in the summer,” said a Benfica source.

City have more than enough funds to secure Gaitan and he would have been highly recommended to manager Roberto *Mancini by another *Argentinian at the Etihad, Sergio Aguero.

But United boss Sir Alex Ferguson is also an admirer of Gaitan and is ready to do battle with City to get his man, who would be ideal as the long-term replacement for veteran star Ryan Giggs.

I honestly have no idea why we would spunk 25 million to strengthen our strongest position on the field.

I was saying the exact same thing two-three years ago when we were strongly linked with a dominant left sided player in David Silva. I'm not comparing the two because I haven't seen much of Gaitan, but does he have a future in a play-making midfield role?

He actually played for Boca as a #10, he got moved to the wing because Aimar plays that role at Benfica.

How many years does Giggs have left? Two?

How about Park?

Fullbacks come cheaper. We are just as well stocked in forwards as wingers. Unless you are buying Rio a central defender is cheaper. We have just spent big on goalkeepers.

The only real question is where else in the squad you'd spend big.

We need a midfielder. Okay. But the club can spend big on both. We spent that much last summer. Furthermore a young player like a Gaitan is more value at 25 mil than a CM in their late 20s. Age must always be taken into account when judging prices.

I fear for Nani's future if we bring in what is another winger - I hope this guy is seen as someone who can play deep as a second striker or someone who can be rotated

We have enough talent on the flanks already.
No. Park looks spent. That leaves us young, Valencia and Nani. Yet we probably have to replace Berbatov too. Personally I'd want us to replace Park's impact on the flank and Berbatov with one player. Be it a promoted one from with in (i,e Brady/Petrucci) or a signed one. Especially one who can also play upfront.

I don't believe we need a Modric type for center midfield at all. Especially not with Anderson,Cleverley, Scholes and Giggs still around. We need a Martinez type way more.

Look at the impact Scholes has made coming back and he is on his last legs so if we could replace him with a Modric or similar then i think its wise to especially with Scholes still around to enable the new player to settle and not need to hit the ground running.

I would like to see us sign a class CM and a class CF. If we get those two with Rooney playing just behind the CF and Tony on the right and Young on the left, It will be awesome. Just my opinion like.

We will not have another season in which we survive with only Carrick as the only consistently available holding player we have. We've been very fortunate he hasn't been injured once or dipped in form as a result of being over used. for that reason I really don't see why we should bring in a Modric with Anderson, and Cleverely still on the books, with Scholes and Giggs still around...

I also believe the 2 problem areas we will have next season to solve are holding midfield and Berbtov's replacement. Modric wouldn't solve either issue for us IMO. Especially since we have good reason to believe SAF wants to inject real pace into the team by the end of the next transfer window.

Why do we need to replace Berbatov? We don't need to spend and replace a player who barely plays for us as it is. We could give the Carling Cup games to younger players like Will Keane and/or play 4-3-3 with only one striker in those games.

Yeah replacing Berbatov at this point is a bit like replacing Hargreaves last year.

Why do we need to replace Berbatov? .....
Because he is the only other player we have who plays in the hole as well as Rooney. A position that is crucial in Europe.

We also wont be bringing in someone just for the carling cup. For we want to add real creativy to our overall first team squad. So your worry about the Keane's is unfounded.

True, another winger will be a possibility, but I don't see the point of an expensive one. Should be looking for something from within or, if not, a cheaper talent we can nurture, in hope he doesn't turn out to be an Obertan or a Tosic.
That is why I don't see us going cheap. That is why we've been looking at the likes of Hazard, Gaitan and Goetze.

I agree with that sentence, just not in the way you are alluding to.

We had spent money on both players and they were members of the squad, active or not and whether they were playing or not doesn't change the fact that the club needed a defensive midfielder then in the same way we need a good 4th striking option now.

I agree with the Chief. The biggest weakness our squad has is a lack competition/cover for Carrick and Rooney.

So the two from Benfica, Gaitan and Garcia, would make a lot of sense. Another full-back would be nice too.

I'd like us to improve the quality of the team, which I still believe is below par since we failed to replace Ronaldo and Tevez. So 'cover' doesn't cover it, for me.

So you don't rate Welbeck or Hernandez?

We've already got 3 estabilished wingers and one who can do the job. Not to forget that Fabio can do a great job there too. Do we really need another one? I doubt it.

CM is the problem. We've got 2 injury prone players and 2 old players who can, at best, be considered as short term buys. The like of Pogba and Petrucci (who is also injury prone) will need 2-3 more years on loan.

I don't mind getting a DM and a player like Hazard who can play both CM and AML. However CM need top priority and it needs 2 players. The flanks can wait.

Fabio will never be a winger. We also don't need people who can ''do a job'' when we want our first team squad to be stronger. For that has been our main weakness this year. Papering over weakness with people who can do jobs. I mean the likes of Jones and Park 'did a job'' in midfield......same as Anderson 'doing a job' as holding player. ...

The flanks don't have to wait at all. Because we can get 2 midfielders. One who can play down the middle and a more creative one who can also play on the left and upfront. Which is exactly what we need

The one thing I'm 100% sure of is we won't bring in two pure center midfielders.

I agree we won't bring in two pure midfielders. I also think the two type of players you have mentioned are the sort we need. Can't see us getting two established names, though.

In fairness there aren't that many around anyway (i.e. players that do play in a 2-man centre midfield).
I expect us to buy a defensive midfielder and a winger. We'll see Ashley Young used more centrally next season and perhaps Nani as well. Depending on who the winger will be he might be used there as well and hopefully instead of both of the former named players.

What now?!

Don't know what I was thinking but I changed it fairly soon (say 30-40 seconds later) so I was really hoping no one would see it.

Oh well

James Ducker(Manchester Correspondent of Times) suggesting that we've no Interest in Gaitan.

Suckering City into buying Gaitain while we make off with Hazard in the boot of a stolen Jetta driven by Anderson!
