NHL 2016-2017

Do you think he's one of the top 100 players of all time? I sure as hell don't
He's been the captain for this Blackhawks dynasty, and his importance to the team and overall performances over the last few years can't be underestimated. If he's not in on general ability, he sure as hell is in terms of significance and on/off-court influence which is also something to consider. Longevity might be another factor in his favour at the end of his career. Not to mention he has already won everything there is to win on a team basis and is the youngest member of the Triple Gold club.

Most overrated player in the league is a ridiculous claim, fair enough if you disagree with that though.

That's it though almost all of his teams accolades are team oriented. To put him into the top 100 of all time without any top 10 point finishes or major individual awards is insulting compared to a player like Joe Thornton, Geno Malkin, and Jarod's Iginla is insulting.

I'm not sure i agree with Toews being overrated. Maybe based on ability alone - but his captaincy and contribution during the Blackhawks dynasty really says a lot. I'd actually argue he's one of the most underrated two way players (centers) in the league, as well as one of the smartest players (he simply understands hockey in a way most players don't).

As you mention - hockey is a team sport, and every team needs a captain to motivate them, who also is an excellent player who puts the team first. And that's a job Jonathan Toews does better than most. Whether or not i rate him in the top 100 all time? Probably not, I wouldn't know really. I haven't given any thought to who would be on a top 50, much less top 100 list. And it doesn't matter. His rings and continued longevity as a captain of a perennial cup contender really says a lot, even though he isn't racking up three digit point totals.

EDIT: I would also argue that Toews is more deserving of a place among the top 100 than Iginla.

Hawks catching fire at the right time of the season. I think we're poised for a deep playoff run again if we keep playing like this, although I'm still hoping we'll overtake Minnesota by the end of the season.

Also hoping for the Kings to make the playoffs for Iginla.

What a comeback last night from the Blackhawks, and Minnesota lost again  Playoff berth locked up, looking good for the #1 seed in the West and especially Toews has been on fire recenlty. Good times once again.

I'm guessing our resident Oilers fans will be very happy as well at the moment, seems like they'll finally be in the playoffs again this year.

Till the fat lady sings, nothing is certain We played poorly against the Ave's last night, in fact were the worse of the two teams and yet won 7-4. It seems so strange right now to say this, I'm hoping Talbot gets a break on Saturday he's looking a bit tired of late. However, McDavid and Draisaitl are lighting up teams at the other end, with multi point games a plenty. I'm just glad of the change from not bothering about results at this end of the season to checking who lost and didn't and whom we might play in the off season. We've not been this well placed though since the end of the dynasty team in the early 90's, it's been a struggle at times to be an Oiler, but even if we don't reach the play-off's and I didn't at the start it's a bit easier admiting your an Oiler fan these days.

Someone told me the Sharks are a good bet tonight @ 7/10 - thoughts?
Stay clear. I'd go Washington, Minnesota and Oilers tonight, in that order as well.

Edit - just saw you posted it yesterday.. Hope you didn't do it because they got tonked 6-1 by the Stars.

Excellent jinx :wenger:

Minnesota let you down on this one!! I think the biggest shock though was the Blackhawks taking a 7-0 drubbing by the Panthers.

With last night's results, the Oilers just need to beat LA on Tuesday and the drought will be over, we'll be confirmed as play-off bound. Watching After Hour's this morning it was interesting listening to Chiarelli talking about how he set the target of 85 points this year. Many other Oiler fans are grumbling that he set the bar too low, but considering the past few years, I think it was a reasonable target and now we've surpassed it, it's OK to reveal that sort of thing.

Seasons too long they should be at least two weeks into the playoffs by now

For sure, it's time they revise this, or at least have some serious discussions about it.

The seasons should start earlier. Instead of the usual early October starts, why not early September? There shouldn't be any playoff hockey in the NHL beyond May, or perhaps halfway through May, at the most.

Hockey isn't the only one. NBA season should be shorter. MLB season could stand a bit of a trimming.

There is what, 30 NHL teams now. Do the football thing, everyone plays everyone, one home. one away. 59 games. Playoffs begin.

NBA same thing, One home, one away against each team in the league. Let the playoffs begin.

MLB, screw interleague play. We are going back, nobody gives a shit unless it is the Mets v Yankees or maybe the two Chicago teams playing each other. 15 clubs in each league. 148 games total. 6 games each (3 home, 3 away) against the 10 clubs not in your division. 22 games each against the teams in your division. You could tweak it to make it not so heavily weighted towards teams in your division. Say 152 games. 72 within your division, 80 outside.
Either way would shorten the season by about 10 to two weeks, maybe more if they had a few less off days, more double headers.

I think it's fine as it is right now (NBA and NHL at least, don't follow MLB). I love rivalry nights and those games would only occur half as much if you only play 58 games. If the players aren't complaining, I'd leave it as it is. The playoff races in March, playoffs to look forward to in April and season gets decided in June, perfectly fine by me. Players have the Summer off and come back fresh afterwards.

'Hawks grab an early lead through Panarin. If we win this one, the #1 seed in the West should be a formality.

I've not heard any complaints else where about the length of the season. The fact that this season is shorter than usual due to the World Cup of hockey, next year if they go to the Olympics the season will be similar. I'm quite happy with the we have it right now, October is a perfect starting point as autumn/fall is about to begin.

I wouldn't want to change the length of the season either… but merely push it back a month for an earlier start. Such a change would only be an issue during its first season of fruition. Besides, it would probably just affect that season's pre-season anyway. Not that difficult to work around.

I say no to a round-robin format. For the NHL, that is. I don't follow the other leagues over there.

There are the travelling lengths and the time zones to consider in North America, which makes the home and home series a bit different compared to the domestic football leagues in Europe, if that's the aspiration of the format change.

Some distances would rather be the equivalent of the ones we see during continental football, such as the Champions League or Europa League. Those matches are restricted to a handful during the season for the teams competing in Europe (the most recent example that comes to mind is United travelling to Rostov) – it would be many more of those type of distances in the NHL.

Personally I also happen to like the NHL's 80–82 match schedule, but I prefer the previous playoff format. Conference based, 1st vs 8th, 2nd vs 7th etc.

NBA, NHL, NFL, teams already make those trips or used to on a regular basis. You can easily schedule it so that a team is one the road for several games in row without having to jet to and fro across the continent. It is not like they would play one day in NYC, then be expected to be in LA on the very next night. In MLB they usually are in town for several games, so that is a big difference.

But anyways this is derailing the thread.

The more hockey the better in my opinion :D

Jamie Benn faces off for the first time ever against his brother Jordi tonight. Unfortunately Montréal is all but in the playoffs and Dallas out of the race already. Let's also hope the Caps win against the Wild cause we're having to go to Pittsburgh tomorrow night.

My team :D

Gonna be a dandy one. Penguins to win it 4–3. Let's go Pens.

Panarin with first blood  Feck, I'm already too excited for the playoffs, gonna be such a disappointment if we don't get to at least the Conference Finals. All those night staying up till 4am are taking its toll already.

I like the Penguins though, they were the first team I liked when I started following the NHL, purely because of Crosby and Kunitz back then.

2-0 Hawks! :D
Good finish from Panik but way too easy from a Pens' perspective. I'm off to bed now, really hope we don't capitulate like we did against the Lightning last game. Go Blackhawks

What a day to lose my internet at home.... The drought is over and the Oilers are now secured in the play-offs... Listening to the game on Tuesday was so painful, but so good. Now we have that monkey off our backs we can move forward, the Oilers are going to hit cap problems in a couple of years so they have to take the chances and quick, unless of course Ebs and RNH are prepared to take pay cuts.

Well that went well… jesus.

Nice to hear that you like the Penguins as well though. I like the Hawks too. I don't actually really dislike many teams in the NHL, well, except for the Crapitals.

Penguins is the team I've rooted for since I started following the league, mostly because of Mario, back then… in 1994 :) almost got to see him play live, he was scratched because of injury, moments before the game. I had the best seat in the house, too, so it made it a bit more painful when they announced that. So, damn, close.

I have however seen both Crosby and Kunitz (and Malkin) live, it's a whole other story watching Crosby and Malkin up close, they are even more fantastic. That goes for the NHL as a whole. I've been to 7 games in total. Recommended.

Yeah that's definitely on my bucket list, been to an NBA game already in MSG and that was awesome, so definitely planning on going to an NHL game in the future. Hopefully I'll be able to visit Chicago when Toews, Kane, Keith & co are still around. The atmosphere looks amazing.

Not done the NBA, not sure I want to. I do need to go see the Oilers in the new place, in Edmonton in June so will go and have a look around if I can. Went to see them at the old place and being old myself got to see the dynasty team, and see them raise some silver as well. That's something I won't forget, though it's so far back it's easy to. I'm sure I'm one of a few people to see two different Gretzky's play hockey, as I also saw Keith play for Ayr in the British League.

Maybe you can still catch a game with a bit of luck ;)

I doubt it I arrive in mid June, though saying that the last time the Oilers appeared in the play off's they did play on that date, losing game 7 to Carolina . However, it would be fun to take in cup parade were it to happen.

No NHL players at the 2018 Winter Olympics :(

Ahh the good old Northlands. Saw a few games there myself.

No NHL players at the 2018 Winter Olympics :(

The rumblings suggest this is the final decision. Nothing coming out suggesting this is just the first move to get exactly what the NHL want from the IOC and IIHF to get them to the Olympics. I'm hearing suggestions that in retaliation the NHL won't be allowed to compete in 2022 either, so this needs to be sorted and fast.

Toronto Maple Leafs on a good run I hear?
Yeah, 8-1-1 in their last 10 games and on a four game win streak for the moment, looks like they'll be heading to the playoffs for only the second time in twelve barren years. They also have one of the most exciting young talents in the league, Auston Matthews, who is breaking all kinds of (rookie and Toronto) records at the moment.

splendid, so when I move to Toronto in 2 weeks time, I should indeed make an effort to support them?!

I probably haven't watched more than two of their games in full this season so hard to inform you on how exciting/good they actually are, but if they're about to become your local team then yes, I'd say you should support them :) and Matthews is very exciting, I can tell you that much. Only 19 years old so definitely one for the long haul.
