NHL 2016-2017

Exciting young team. Their rookies have a combined points total almost 3 times as much as the next closest team. Kinda like Man Utd in that they've bad some shocking managers in recent times, but now they have mike Babcock who is one of the best there is. Plus I got gifted two of the exact same maple leaf tshirt at Christmas so I need someone to buy one of them from me :)

Leo Komarov is also one of the most awesome guys in the rink as well as outside of it.

I follow the Leafs due to me considering Toronto my 2nd home. I follow Raptors and Blue Jays closely but haven't bothered so much with the Leafs. I'm going to start following them a bit closer this year though - I literally decided to start during the outdoors match vs Chicago (not a bad time to start)

Can anyone give me some brief info? Best players? New players? Shit players? What's the future looking like?

Mitch marner and auston Matthews are too young exciting players and for me the best on the team. Khadri is kind of like the enforcer but he's a bit of a dick.

They gave their coach a 7 year $50m and the plan is to have a Stanley cup in that timeframe. They should be getting into the playoffs next season at the very least, although they just might make it this year if they can stop losing games from strong winning positions.

Pretty much every game of theirs is exciting to watch.

Anyone watch replays on kodi?

Right if I'm getting into this properly can somebody answer some of my questions?

Who are the top teams?

Who are the top 10 attackers? Top 10 defensive players? Good keepers?

Whats all this team lines nonsense?

Basic rules? Fouls, etc.

The top teams change every year but right now Columbus and Pittsburgh are good value for money.

The best keeper, and probably the best player in the whole league actually, is Carey price of Montreal. No goalie comes close to him.

Attacker wise you have Sidney Crosby, Jonathan toews, Alex ovechkin, Patrick Kane, Tyler seguin, Steve stamkos.... All those players are superstars, then you have three unbelievable young players Conor mcdavid, Auston Matthews and Patrick laine.

The lines stuff is just who the best players are. Line 1 is your best set up, line 4 is usually guys who do nothing but kill penalties and occasionally fight. All the best players are on line 1.

Don't worry about defensive players, especially PK subban.

Jaromir Jagr is the biggest legend currently playing. He's an older guy, and when a 19 year old threatened to go to the newspapers about some stuff he had said/done with her, he told her to go ahead as it would make him look like a stud.

How often do they change lines?

So your best RW, C, LW are all on line 1?

Do Defense change as often?

Where can I find the list of lines? Like a depth chart sort of thing?

Probably once every minute on average or even a bit faster than that, it's physically exhausting so they're constantly changing. Also depends on the game situation of course, if you're attacking for more than a minute it's hard to make changes, they usually happens when the defense has the puck close to their own goal. I think defensive shifts are sometimes a bit longer.

Your best players are not necessarily all on the first line, it's about how they compliment each other. For example when the Kings won the Stanley Cup a few years ago, their best offensive line was the 70's line (Pearson, Toffoli and Carter as their numbers are 70, 73 and 77) while Kopitar was arguably their best player and Brown was their captain. I wouldn't focus on lines too much, neither on the star offensive players - if you watch enough games and highlights, you'll figure out soon enough who the best players in the league are.

Great thanks.

What is icing? And the offside rule similar to football at all?

In terms of lines again - will you ever get a mix and match line or will all 3 players swap the same time?

From previous page:

It's three periods of 20mins, in case of the tie there'll be a 3-on-3 OT of 5mins. If the score is still tied after that, there's a penalty shoot-out. Points distribution is 2 for a W, 1 for an OT loss and 0 for a regular loss. Teams play with a goaltender, two defenders an three attackers. If there's a penalty (for example a high stick or tripping another player), the penalized player goes into the penalty box and the opposing team has a man advantage for 2mins (power play).

What sometimes happens is an icing call, which means that a player shoots the puck from before the halfway line behind the other teams' goalline and the puck remains untouched. Icing is allowed when you're on a penalty kill (4-on-5 situation when one of your players is in the penalty box).

A player is offside when he enters the offensive zone before the puck does. The two blue lines are there to mark the offensive zones.

I think those are the most-made calls when you're watching an NHL game but not sure.
Re: lines, I'm not sure as I don't really pay attention to the changes, I suppose it can happen but most of the time lines will be as they should.

Great help. Thanks a lot.

I'll be following Maple Leafs - who does everybody else follow in this thread?

Edmonton Oilers - Tribec, Jagga7
Winnipeg Jets - Kristjan
Detroit Red Wings - Stobzilla, ThaReaper01, Eboue(?)
Toronto Maple Leafs - JoaquinJoaquin, Paz, DavidG, Dwazza
Dallas Stars - MrMarcello
Chicago Blackhawks - RobinLFC

Think that's it for people replying to this thread. No idea who top1whoisman supports but I guess all Finnish players.

Of course I'm a Red Wings fan. Haven't been to a game yet but plan to go to the Joe one more time.
Will Caesars be ready for next season? I'm a bit sad that the Pistons move as well, The Palace of Auburn Hills is the best name ever for a sports arena.

Yes. The Palace was state of the art when it opened and it's still really nice, but it is in freaking Auburn Hills. Auburn hills is 35 miles from downtown and the edge of the metro area. The next town over is farms. The Detroit Pistons should play in Detroit.

Lines generally stay in tact, but mixed lines does happen sometimes, like when a coach is trying to win a really tight (often low scoring) game.

Montreal here :D

Boston Bruins, reporting in! Also following the NY Rangers on the side (because of Zuccarello being a Noggie).

Haha, pretty much true tbh. Have never had a favourite team, have been a supporter of Selänne’s team (Jokerit) since the mid-80s, so rooted for Jets when Teemu made the jump. Was extremely happy that he won the cup in Anaheim, one of the most emotional I’ve been as a hockey follower. But yeah, I try to watch as many games as possible and notice myself being more interested when teams with Finnish players are on. Laine, for neutrals too, is an exciting player to watch. Same with some other young players; Aho to name one.

Laine is a spectacular player. Explosive, great technique, excellent scorer. Shame about his concussion, looked awful.

All hail the great Ovi. Points 1000 and 1001 last night.

More general hockey rather than NHL, but a word on Hayley Wickenhieser. Finally retired from hockey this week, spent 22 years representing Team Canada, 7 world golds, 4 Olympic golds and a silver, in the words of Gretz last night the female Gordie Howe. She's helped drag the women's game from no where to where it is today, a respected game and not some sort of oddity. She's off to medical school or so she said last night on After Hours, so good luck with that, and thank you for everything.

As far as the NHL goes, I'm trying to remember the last time the Oilers got to January and possibly even February and were still playing meaningful hockey. A lot will no doubt be put down to McDavid, but I think Mclellan has to take some serious credit for turning round the titanic. He's got the players playing well enough to break all kinds of negative streaks, to keep winning and to be positive. Since the cup run, the only other coach to get this close to this was Krueger.

Big kudos to Patrick Maroon as well, he's found something this year, and doing the job that Lucic was brought in to do and at a fraction of the cost. Plus his pure emotion and joy at playing hockey is something to behold, loving his attitude this year. 18 goals is his best ever in the NHL, and also leading the Oilers, McDavid can provide goals for everyone for sure, if Maroon can get 20 in a season.

Another bit of hockey stuff, huge win for Nottingham Panthers, winning the Continental Cup. The first English team to win a European competition. Hopefully a step forward for UK hockey.

That Capitals vs Penguins game though

Another crazy game, Stars vs Rangers.

The NHL celebrating the 80's as part of the 100 years celebrations....

McDavid & Draisaitl both score their NHL 100th points in the game against Florida last night. The Oilers were shocking last night, yet some how pulled off a victory all be it in the last embers of OT. Eberle and Kassian kill the longest goal scoring streaks in the club. Hopefully Eberle will break out for the rest of the season here on in.

Pittsburgh is the defending Stanley Cup champions.

Price is an excellent netminder but horribly overated.

Montreal is the the United of the NHL having won 24 Cups but they are currently in a Liverpool phase having not won since 1992-1993 and they don't look like winning this year either.

The next big superstar Connor McDavid at age 19 is leading the league in scoring. Sidney Crosby arguably the best player in world is second, and a defenseman, Brent Burns (6'5 behemoth with amazing technique) is 3rd

Alex Ovechkin is one of the greatest goal scorers of all-time.

Johanthan Toews is widely considered the most overrated player in the NHL.

It is amazing that at 45 years Jagr is still playing at such a high level.

There are two 18 year olds having monster seasons and they were the first two selections in the most recent draft.

Auston Matthews (Toronto Maple Leafs the Liverpool of the NHL with huge legacy but no Stanley Cup since 1967)

Patrick Laine (Winnipeg Jets)

The individual trophies are as follows:
Hart - MVP by the media
Art Ross - highest point scorer
Lindsay - MVP by the players
Rocket Richard - most goals
Norris - best defenseman
Vezina - best goalie
Selke- best defensive forward
Lady Byng - player with best sportsmanship

The team with the most points at the end of the year wins the president's trophy. However this has been a bad omen in recent years.

The playoffs make the NHL as the intensity increases exponentially and the crowds can border in lunacy.

The MVP for the playoffs is the Conn Smythe.

That's obvious, but it's been so long that we've sort of consigned that to history along with the Dynasty team.. We've been so down right bad over the past 10 years!!! Goodness knows how we won last night. I watched the game on delay this morning, felt like calling the Chicago PD to report a robbery.. Mind I had said it was going to be 3-1. We are currently the top Canadian side (were this morning after the win), and around 95% certain of reaching the play-off's.

I wasn't sure we'd reach the play-off's this year, next year was going to be the year for me to see our run end, similarly I can't see us doing well in the play-off's the euphoria and energy expanded to reach them will kill us in round one. Plus we can't ride Talbot all the way can we??

Going to be an interesting trade deadline for the Red Wings for once. So many trade chips can go on the table.

Vanek will be cheap n tasty for a playoff team, he's had some form this year and could maybe get us a low 1st or a 2nd and 3rd. Smith might be a good depth D rental. Feel some wholesale changes coming for us this off season. The streak, impressive as it is needed to die. If we can shift Green, Howard, Vanek and Smith and leave some cap unprotected come the expansion draft I will be happy.

I'm a ducks fan but I don't really watch it much anymore due to it moving from sky/espn to premier sports

We need to move on from Ken Holland.

We need to move on from Ken Holland.

There is always that as well. Weirdly I expect he could actually still do a good job, we've been fighting a losing battle with trying to keep the streak going but I still think him and his team have it within them to spot good talent.

I'd sooner get shot of a lot of the playing staff and try to give some more Ice time to Sproul, Oullette, Mantha, Athanasiou, Jurco, Svechnikov and Hicketts next year.

Same here, was so stoked for Selänne when he finally won the ring. Although Ducks are a disney team I still got a soft spot for them (RIP Ruslan).

I think Laine is a great player but can't stand the guy.

TPS says hello top1

Hopefully this is the kick in the ass he needs but it's hard to see it. Especially after letting Nill and Yzerman go because Holland wouldn't step aside.
