NHL 2016-2017

Oilers fans were class in the Senators game, celebrating Anderson when named first star of the game.

On the Oilers forums I go on, the general opinion is whilst obviously not happy about losing, we can take it on this occasion if only because of Anderson. We are all but ignoring this game and moving on. However, as I've said before the test now is for us to bounce back in Toronto tomorrow, let this game go and make November another winning month.

Montreal's explosive start goes on, 8 game winning streak.

After last season, I'm treating this season with a healthy balance of optimism and skepticism. Cautious optimism, if you will. My fear is this team will peak too early and begin to fade at the wrong time. You don't get prizes for dominating in October/November and the monumental collapse in 15/16 will linger in my memory for while. That said, it is pretty fantastic being a Habs fan at the moment

I have to say I've started to live the NHL during my few weeks in Canada and the USA.

I went to see the Devils v the Coyotes which was great despite them both being poor sides.

Ew, that game against the Aves. Can't wait to get Parise back, that's for sure.

Laine has been a revelation in Winnipeg. Knew he’d have a good first season, but to be the league’s top scorer (2 so far tonight) after 14 games or so… Wow. Still got to improve his even strength game, but I can imagine Jets fans being pretty happy with him. The 2nd quickest release in the league after Ovechkin?

Edit: Did I say 2 tonight. I meant 3. #HatrikLaine

He's been absolutely brilliant so far, long may it continue.

It will. He’s only going to get better, it’s amazing when you remind yourself that he’s only 18. Not many players have dominated games at that age. For example Teemu was 22 when he joined Jets, quite often even the best European players debut, let alone, dominate, at 20 yrs or so (Ovechkin for example).

Las Vegas' franchise nickname and logo will be reveiled tomorrow at 8:30pm ET. Will ne interesting to see a new franchise in the league and which players will go there. If the Raiders should eventually move to Vegas as well, they'll have two new franchises in the span of a couple of years.

Blackhawks doing well lately after an average start, I think we're loaded enough for another deep playoff run. How Hossa still gets it done is just

Do you still feel that after last night??

The period up to Christmas will tell me all I want to know about the Oilers, I've a sneaking suspicion that they'll be very streaky all year, probably take the monkey off the back and earn a play off spot, but with another year's experience, a few new faces I fancy us to make a real push next year. We Oiler fans are still trying to work out what Kris Russell has done to the team, he seems to be adding to it and making us win, none of us expected that.

Vegas Golden Knights, not so sure and it sounds like London Knights were a bit picky over the name as well, can't say I blame them. The Logo is OK, but lets hope the team starts better than the naming ceremony yesterday.

Yeah the name is shit really, surely could have come up with a better name than that.

Yea, the name is shit. Golden Knights will be just Knights after a few weeks. And why drop Las before Vegas? It makes no sense. Imagine Angeles Kings, Diego Chargers, Antonio Spurs etc..

The logo and profile is alright, though. And it's cool that Las Vegas finally has a pro sports team.

Oilers smashed Chicago when they were awful....not gonna change much, it's a typical anomaly of an overlong 82 game season.

As much as the Coyotes have the mark over the Oilers (25 straight games where they've taken points off us), we have done really well against the Blackhawks over the past few seasons. Including a couple of huge wins, not sure what it is that causes these freaky type of runs, long live the Oilers/Chicago run of course.

However, the day the Oilers beat Arizona in regulation is the season we reach the play-offs, and when we beat them in Arizona we'll win the cup....

We rarely see Price this angry

And what in gods name is Petry doing?

Hockey may be a tough sport, but it doesn't mean that players can't get a bit emotional every now and again. I think Patrick Maroon has won himself a fair few new fans after this interview last night

Ok guys.

I have watched a few NHL games over the past few nights and loved every second of them, trouble is i'm not too sure what's going on. Can one of you give me an idiots guide to the rules please?

What exactly don't you understand?

It's three periods of 20mins, in case of the tie there'll be a 3-on-3 OT of 5mins. If the score is still tied after that, there's a penalty shoot-out. Points distribution is 2 for a W, 1 for an OT loss and 0 for a regular loss. Teams play with a goaltender, two defenders an three attackers. If there's a penalty (for example a high stick or tripping another player), the penalized player goes into the penalty box and the opposing team has a man advantage for 2mins (power play).

What sometimes happens is an icing call, which means that a player shoots the puck from before the halfway line behind the other teams' goalline and the puck remains untouched. Icing is allowed when you're on a penalty kill (4-on-5 situation when one of your players is in the penalty box).

A player is offside when he enters the offensive zone before the puck does. The two blue lines are there to mark the offensive zones.

I think those are the most-made calls when you're watching an NHL game but not sure.

Ah ok that makes sense it was 'icing' and the offsides that were confusing me mostly.

Hiw shall i pick a team to follow? Some kind of draw might be in order

Yeah it's a bit hard without precise questions. Happy to help, glad you've found the great sport :)

You can also get bigger penalties: 2+2 for high stick if the opponent ends up bleeding from his face, 5 mins in some instances, 10mins usually for misconduct/unprofessional behavior/strong dissent and 20 (banned for the rest of the game) for dangerous tackles as an example.

5mins is the max. amount of power play time given, 10s & 20s are additional penalties which keep the player out of the game for a longer amount of time but don't effect to the amount of players on ice.

Often when chasing a 1-2 goal lead, teams pull their goalie for an extra outfield player to play power play for the last minute(s) of the game. You're allowed to do this at any time.

If you like/appreciate history and tradition, there's the "Original Six"; Boston Bruins, Chicago Blackhawks, Detroit Red Wings, Montreal Canadiens, New York Rangers & Toronto Maple Leafs.

Right ok.

One thing i noticed was the puck going in to the air and players catching it and putting it back down, this is allowed?

Also, the officials seemed to allow fighting? Is this normal? And if the puck goes in off of a players skate does that count?

I'd suggest you just keep watching as much games as possible and you'll soon find out which teams you like the most, due to exciting players, history, fan base, even jerseys and stuff like that...

I started out three years ago liking the Penguins (because of Crosby, arguably best player in the league and the only one I knew at the time) and the Blues (liked a lot of their players, still love Tarasenko) but soon switched to the Blackhawks because they were a strong team with a lot of history, I loved their logo, they were consistently challenging and have some really exciting players like Kane, Toews, Keith, Hossa and many others. Even if you don't like a team straight away it's highly enjoyable and competitive to just follow the league, let's just hope you make a better pick in the NHL than the one you made in the NFL ;)

Now we're talking, precise questions! :boring:

You can catch the puck with your glove, but you can't keep it in the glove for more than like a half a sec or so. Can't score/pass with your glove, except passing is allowed in your own defensive zone (blue line marks this).

Fighting is "allowed"; 99% of the time it's two players who've planned this in the faceoff or even before the game. So it's entertainment, but sometimes helps a team gain momentum when the chips are down. So there's spontanious fights, too. If a star player of the team gets hit unfairly or something, the guy who did it might get "challenged". It's an unwritten rule that you "accept" the proposition to fight. The referees let the fight go on until a player is on the ice or hurt. Broken noses and such happen all the time, but the "pro goonies" are quite even in skills so it might end without any proper punches to the face.

As long as there's no intention to kick the puck in goal, it's allowed.

Thank you.

The goalies, are they allowed out of that blue semi circle thingy? I noticed some diagonal lines behind the goals, is that their area too?

They sure are allowed to skate wherever they wish to, but are not protected on the same level outside that semi-circle in front of the goal, inside which an attacking players isn't basically allowed to stay/stop.

The lines behind the goal mark the area inside which the goalie can play the puck with his stick. Goalie can't cover the puck behind the goal line unless at least one of his skates is in the semi-circle thingy.

Right ok this is great. I have a choice of games to watch tonight so i am excited for a night of hockey. Thanks for your help and thst you too @RobinLFC

I am a 49ers fan in American football, so logic dictates that I should be a San Jose Sharks fan in Hockey, right? keep it to one area so to speak. This makes sense, right?

Well, I officially love this sport. I now have a good understanding of the rules and spent my night flicking between several games. It's so exciting! Overtime is amazing as everything becomes slightly more fast paced. I think I will pick the San Jose Sharks as my team as they seem to be the closest team in terms of location to the 49ers so it kinda makes sense.

Makes sense yeah but remember that hockey is almost exclusively played in the evening, so all of their home games are probably around 4:30am GMT (don't know where you're located or if that's a problem).

Sharks went to the Stanley Cup final last season btw, but lost to the Penguins.

Not sure how much sense it makes, but I follow the Dolphins in the NFL and Oilers in NHL, not exactly local to each other!! What's stranger is that I am good friends with a couple of guys in Edmonton, who follow United and the Dolphins as well. We met in an Oilers forum and whilst we had a commonality with the Oilers and United, it's only the past couple of years we've found ourselves cheering for the Dolphins.

As for picking teams, I became an Oiler when I got taken to a game by my family in Canada, they weren't a bad team back then, so it was easy to cheer for the Dynasty team even from this side of the pond, more so as United weren't exactly winning much at that point. I could be a glory hunter from a far.

NHL has made a lot of good rule changes in the recent 10 years (strict rule about using your stick to slow down opponent player etc), but the 3vs3 OT rule is the best by far. It's a return to the good old outdoors hockey the players played when they were kids. All about the skills and skating

As for teams, the Devils have traditionally been quite a defensive team, although this of course changes with different coaches etc. Edit: Don't mean that one shouldn't support them, just an info re: NJD.

I hate it when the Habs are playing in San Jose for that reason. Always a 3:30am kick off, while most of their other games alternate between 12pm and 12:30pm.

It doesn't necessarily have to make sense if you're not from around those parts, imo. If he has a connection to the bay area or California, it makes sense to support a team from that region but personally, I don't let geography stand in the way of picking my favourite time. I support the Lakers, the Blackhawks and the Texans (while I can't stand the Rockets who are also from Houston), so it's a bit arbitrary I agree.

A lot of my friends who also follow American sports support the Bruins, Celtics and Patriots though, so maybe we're a bit of an exception..
