Neymar Da Silva

I don't think you can call him the best player in the national team when the only decent sides he's scored against have been Germany and Ecuador, and the Germany game was against an experimental side in a friendly. Other than that he's scored against Scotland, Costa Rica and a severely weakened Argentina side in friendlies. He was one of Brazil's poorest players in a terrible Copa America performance and that more than anything justifies the doubts people have about him.

Ultimate party footballer.

Did anybody see the rainbow flick he did in the last game?

Complete pisstaker, but i love it  he is what football is all about IMO

Football is all about fancy tricks?

It's supposed to be the beautiful game. That's the way the brazilians play it anyways.

Obviously the object of the game is to score more goals than the opposition, but if you can do it in style, all the better.

Because of the tricks?! Nah, I think people love Brazil because of stuff like this rather than rainbow flicks and that...

The defending in that second clip is atrocious. Look at how they stand off every Brazilian on the ball without even trying to win the ball!

"Oh, an opponent has the ball just outside box, what do I do?! Now I know, I'll stand two yards away from him, that'll show him!"

To be fair, it's blazing hot in Mexico around that time - apparently Bobby Charlton lost 10lbs in sweat in their game v Brazil while it was 38°C. Added to that they'd played 6 games in under 3 weeks, had already played 86 minutes of this game, were losing 3-1 and were facing up to Pele...these things tend to make you look a lot worse than you are!

Fair enough, that'll do it I suppose! Was just amazed to see them stand off like that and there being so little intensity in such an important game.

No, its about fun, football should be played and watched with a smile.

Let me ask you this; would you rather see a player do 2 step overs and nutmeg the defender, or the defender come through with a crunching tackle and take the ball.

I know which 1 i would choose.

There is a reason why Neymar is so highly rated, because he is EXCITING.

Just the way Ronaldo used to get everybody standing and excited that something would happen at old trafford, Neymar does the same thing.

Yes ok doing tricks isnt always effective and the right thing too do, but it sure as hell makes it funner to watch.

Never understood what was so great about that Carlos Alberto goal. It's one of those things that people just accept as being the "best ever" because we're constantly told it is. I can think of plenty of better team goals, involving much more inventive passing at a much higher pace.

Agreed, I think the context of it is a big part of why it's so hailed though. I can't think of any goals better than that scored in a World Cup Final, certainly not to seal it or display a side's total dominance.

I think who it was scored by and the event it was scored in is every bit as important as the move itself.

  1. World Cup final
  2. Greatest footballing nation (and scored in typical flowing style)
  3. Greatest international team to play the game
  4. Scored by the captain, a defender
  5. Set up by Pele, the king

The fact it's in a World Cup final alone is enough for the hype machine to go into overdrive never mind the rest, how many better goals have been scored in a World Cup final?

Football should be played and watched with a smile - I agree 100%. I just don't think the best way to do that is through tricks, I don't think that's what the beautiful game is all about. The most fun teams I've seen play are 70s Ajax, Brazil '82 and France '84 and and that was because of things far more exciting, attractive and impressive than tricks. All I was saying.

Each too there own, and thats fine.

I am definitely a sucker for a good trick though. And i enjoy that about neymar.

I hope wherever he ends up going that they dont try and take that out of his game, and just make him a speed merchant.

rather have Lucas

Why? Makes no sense.

Neymar is far more talented, and is already producing end product (albeit in the Brazilian league).

He's just far too talented not to be world class in the future. I think it's getting to the point where people are getting a little sick of him due to the hype, and downplaying his talent. For me, most exciting young player in the world, and by a clear distance. Really is tearing up the Brazilian league.

Pity he'll never be a United player. :(

Jesus, that is some atrocious defending. The video should be titled 'how not to close down', seems incredibly half-arsed.

This was 1970 - the aggressive pressing and closing down that every modern football team uses hadn't been invented yet.

Neymar - Messi - Sanchez

Could very well see Neymar being a replacement for Villa in a few years.

That's why I always thought the 2014 deal would make sense.

But again I think it's all pure speculation at this point.

Don't want to be pedantic and I may be wrong but didn't Victor Maslov implement this technique in the 60s at Dynamo Kiev?

You're right; I should have chosen my words more carefully. I should have said pressing wasn't yet widespread in 1970, though it had been invented a few years before that.

Viktor Maslov and Osvaldo Zubeldía had first implemented it in the mid-to-late 1960s - Maslov, as you pointed out, at Dynamo Kyiv and Zubeldía at Estudiantes - so probably they should share the title of 'Inventor of Pressing' in a Newton/Leibniz kind of way. When I made my comment I was thinking more of Rinus Michels and Valeriy Lobanovskyi at Ajax and Dynamo Kyiv in the early 1970s, and also Arrigo Sacchi at Milan in the late 1980s.

That slight inaccuracy aside, my point was that it's easy to look at clips of old matches now and laugh at poor defending and players not closing opposition players down, but in the grand scale of things the concept of pressing in football is a relatively new tactical development.

But I guess I'm just some guy who thinks football was some type of amateur pastime until after Sky began to cover it, so what do I know.

Am i wrong to say he has the potential to be the next Cristiano Ronaldo if he has the same desire and application to be the world's best? I would love us to sign him with Fergie still at the helm even though we don't need him. We didn't really need Phil Jones either

He shares some similarities to Cristiano, but they are still very different. Cristiano had a bigger frame when he was the same age, even though he was still quite light. He was also more prolific in the air. Neymar is all flair, dribbling, imagination and bundles of pace. His confidence means that he is able to pull off crazy stuff on the regular. He certainly has the potential to be one of the best players in the world. People question his attitude and work ethic. From what I know he is a typical Brazilian, always joking and having fun, generally just not taking life too seriously. I think this is one of the main reasons that he doesn't really have a desire to leave Brazil yet. I don't think it's a big problem as long as he continues to work hard and doesn't let his ego get too big. He already has supreme confidence, so he needs to keep that in check.

I find it hard to get excited about a player that is destined for Spain very soon. He is a special talent though and doesnt seem like a whiney drama queen that is Robinho.

The problem is his asking price is somewhere around 40-60 mio. € atm which really leaves only a handful of clubs capable of paying that amount of money.

Not to mention that he has is already earning around 100k p/w in Brazil and will probably ask for a lot more once he moves to Europe.

Real, Barca, City and PSG are atm imo the only teams able to get such a deal done.

That's his asking price, not the market price, a common confusion on the Cafe. A seller can ask any price he likes, the market price is determined by what buyers are willing to pay.

Not really if the club doesn't have to sell then the asking price is very much the market price.

Naturally every buyer will try to get a lower price but as I said if the club doesn't have to and doesn't want to sell there will just be no deal.

But if you feel better I will correct it to asking price so your delicate mind won't take any damage from having to read such a grievous mistake.

It's still not the market price, which is determined by the intersection of the supply and demand curves.

I could put an old jockstrap on Ebay and ask £1M. It wouldn't make much sense to say that the market price of a second hand jockstrap is £1,000,000.

I agree of course that if his club are determined to hold on to him unless offered that kind of money, he won't go for less, just as I don't have to sell my jockstrap unless offered the full £1M.

Any offers for the jockstrap?

That comparison is bUllshit imo mate.

Neymar could easily attract bids worth 30-35 mil pounds even today.

Indeed, the flick goes nowhere and the no-look pass just looks embarrassing. Obviously needs lessons from his Brazil team-mate.

Sure he didnt pull it off 100%, but he would of got the ball the other side had the 2nd defender not taken him out.

Neway its not the point, its just the confidence he shows is great too watch.

P.S ive never seen Damiao do that before, i had him down as more of a goal poacher type, does he have general good skills, or was that a 1 off?
