I wonder how many on here actually know the significance of the "Kop"

We won’t get any public money towards the stadium and nor should we

But we will get public money for improvement works to the surrounding area such as roads

Liverpool is called Spion Kop.

it was named after a famous hill in South Africa where a local regiment had suffered heavy losses during the Boer War in 1900. More than 300 men had died, many of them from Liverpool, as the British army attempted to capture the strategic hilltop.

Being Liverpool I thought it was something to do with police. Well there you go.

Preston North End had a Spion Kop too, quite a few grounds did.

Ah couldn't make it in the end so didn't realise - where in the stadium did they do it ?

The International Suite. I didn't think I've ever been in before, but I randomly did for a game against Spurs in 2015. It's been renovated since. The last time I had access, it more resembled a Toby Carvery! Nice to see the stadium is being upgraded for some visitors!

Was it the boer war British v Dutch farmers. Battle of Spion Kop if my memory from school serves me.
It was a steep hill and when they built the steep stands at some football grounds they got nicknamed the Kop.

Yep

Also that season ticket holders are more likely to want a new stadium.

Think it shows that a lot of nostalgia is from those who don't regularly go to games have only seen games on TV
Corrected it for you

The survey results were a bit surprising but maybe not that much - I expected quite a split with a slight preference towards refurb

anecdotally most matchgoers that I know were open to either option with a few strongly against a new build

The 1958 think the survey was rigged or asked the wrong questions or something so are doing their own which all seems a bit pointless

I doubt it was rigged but it was probably worded to make the result they wanted more likely.

But at the end of the day it's simply a PR exercise. Ultimately they'll do what they want regardless of the result of a survey.

Probably but if the survey showed 80% of fans wanted to stay at Old Trafford and they still went ahead with a new build then I reckon they'd have had to offer some big incentives on ticket prices etc to keep fans happy

As it is, they can now present it as fans backing the preferred new build option and completely shaft us on price increases

Why can't they do 100k with a rebuild?

They would of looked at space and current structure and figured out what's feasibile. You look at Barcas and Madrid's stadium. Yeah they going to look all fancy but they are only adding 5k and 3k seats respectively

If they call it the Kop I will be very surprised. Will the anthem be YAWN as well? (joke)
They’ve been gifted yawn by the media and they’re working on gifting them sole rights to “the reds” but they don’t have exclusivity on the “kop” yet. Media still working on this to make them unique.

Rebuild btw

The fan study was created by the Cathie Marsh Institute for Social Research at The University of Manchester. I feel quite confident is saying that a Russel Group university isn't going to build bias into their work anyway, but they're even less likely to when Professor Dame Nancy Rothwell is one of the members of the regeneration task force. She isn't going to risk reputational damage to the university she was Vice Chancellor of for 15 years for the sake of pleasing Sir Jim Radcliffe.

You can be as cynical as you like about whether this is a PR or market research exercise, the job of the taskforce is clear, and it is to make a recommendation only. That recommendation can be completely ignored by the club's ownership, but I don't think the people involved are giving up their time for a pointless exercise.

Hold on, the Boer War was really cool? :nervous:
That's not what I meant. Actually, I saw images on the wiki site that I can't unsee and that's not good. I never thought about the origin of the use of the word kop for a section of stands and the fact that it has these historic origins is cool. It also exposes a massive gaping hole in our U.S. education system in that we were not taught anything about the Boer War (or any wars in Africa).

I think you needed a membership number or ticket number to go right?

Laughing at the 1958, didn't like the result so crying foul..
I don't know how it works now, I haven't been to OT for quite a few years now, when I first went you queued up and took your chances unless you had a ST or LMTB, and collected tokens from the programme to get tickets for big cup matches!

The US wasn't involved so no need for it to be covered, but one would hope they do cover at least one war in Africa given the US involvement there in WW2!

Is the war of 1812 covered or do they keep quiet about that one?

I am sure the war of 1812 is covered, at least in Maryland. Honestly, WWII education in public school was sorely lacking as well. I learned more from the movies The Longest Day and Patton than I ever did in school (though that may speak to my lack of academic prowess more than anything).
Anyway, back on topic, whatever they do with the stadium, let's hope there is some kop-like structure for the supporters.

My biggest history project at school (in UK) was the centenary of my primary (elementary) school in 1972, so did we study the local history of a Lancashire milltown, nope, the American Civil War!

As for the stadium, a lot is going to depend on the space available, but a 'kop' like structure is meaningless, it's not a specific type of stand, it's just a name that was given to a stand in a ground, in those days they all looked pretty much the same, what you're probably thinking about is more akin to the Dortmund yellow wall
