New forum for football talk

But this is just what the site started off as! You are repeating history, not changing the future.

?

yes it's the equivalent of a major pruning of the main forums. you'd be promoted back if you showed you talked sense, mods could be much stricter with promotions ergo less people would get through and those that did would be those whose posts were generally of a higher quality therefore in the future the overall quality in the main forums would be higher yeah?

Again, you fail to see.

This is what the current system is supposed to do. The fact it's come to this situation now, won't be bettered by starting from scratch, which is in essence what you are suggesting. If it's to start from scratch (which isn't feasible btw), you'd need much more major changes to prevent it from becoming what the forums are now.

Look, we just need more mods to keep control of the football forum. I haven't seen The Kippax Kid for ages.

This is half the problem, girly posters who jump up and down and scream "wind up".

I don't know where this sensitivity has come from....the spastics probably

Not at all, I was quite happy in your thread Davo, and contributed to all manner of discussion in there. It's only when you go crying to the mods for change that I call you out as the hypocrite that you are.

And yep it's like the newbie system just a 3rd tier one with fewer members, the main forums would still be the main forums being sensibly modded and so on, but posters who while too good for the newbies because they raise valid points but who also use the forum for spam and posting shit wouldn't be invited to the 'elite' forum, as Davo said traffic would probably be very slow, this would be the main forum still and users who participated in the 'elite forum would still be posting here because here is where the majority of posters would be posting.

This would still reduce the quality as the reasoned debates and quality discussion would appear in the elite forum.

The main problem is a moderating issue but at the end of the day the mods can only do so much, posters themselves have to try and push for the quality!

Couldn't you just send out an announcement strongly reminding people of the rules, telling them that you are cracking down and actually do it. Some poster's seem to do things because they know they can get away with it. I understand that it is a hard job so maybe you could put forward some of these elite posters to help, similar to the way you let some scout in the newbies.

yes i agree you do need to look at the way the entire place is being regulated, just seems quicker than weeding out individual posters who could then claim 'it is't fair i've been demoted.'

feck, I thought we had got rid of Thatcher!

You have a very high opinion of yourself and your opinion Davo. Especially for someone who uses the word 'Spastic' to describe people with whom you disagree.

However this is a stirling idea because when you have set up your elitist wank fest (for one) maybe you could just feck off and leave us alone.

Forums are supposed to be for all, so that you get some diverse opinion, however misguided, on any given topic.

And before you say it, I wouldn't want to be in your right wing think tank..... Power to the CAF.

Creating a new "elite" forum is a big step towards fascism, so I wont support it.

Lets have a poll. The polls outcome will not necessarily decide what is going to happen, but just to see what the posters in general think about it.

The bit in bold is spot on...

This is why I'm not for an elite forum or demotion.

At the end of the day it's a privately run forum and as such, the rules should be made clear and a clean-up effort be put into force. It shouldn't come to it, but the fact is the site has become far to big to still be the easy-going place it once was. It doesn't need a big arsehole clampdown, it just needs clear boundaries and some respect.

The mods and admin being separated would help for a start, it would give the members a sense of fairness, further more mods should be added to cope with the workload and although they won't be all on the same page, a clear remit should be there - especially in regards to the petty arguments ruining perfectly reasonable threads.

It's more easy than it seems really. It's just the time and effort the real owners of the site have to afford, which is the understandably hard part

There's no easy answer to this problem. An elite forum would piss off decent posters not invited & possibly drive them away further lowering the quality of the forum. Demotion back to the newbies would be better, but would cause lot's of work for the mods.

What about having a lot more mods, maybe a 2 tier system where new mods could demote, but not ban. Those who like the idea of an elite forum could apply to the mods to be the new mods.

This much is very true. It's a power trip, but one that's lead to a decent debate.

There should be another forum set up for football discussion, made up of senior posters only. This could obviously grow as newer posters prove themselves not to be utter spastics

There seems to be an influx of posters on the football forum thesedays who have no knowledge of the game whatsoever...it's embarrassing to read

I'm happy to provide a list of non-spastics if required

if only Liverpool FC had your bottle............they might have a chance of reducing the 20 point gap from last season

It has lead to a good debate, but I find it remarkable that it is Davo that has started it all off. As I see it he is as responsible as any that he has called out as "spastics", to use his word, and as such needs to stand accountable also.

The place does need a shake up, tighter controls are needed in certain forums (not all) and maybe more moderators are needed to share the work load. The set up as it is, is not the problem, the foundations are there, all that is needed is clear boundaries and hard handed moderation to begin with to let everyone know where they stand.

I just want to be able to discuss football occasionally without having to sift through bellends like you, Afro, Ekeke, FrancoBaresi and numerous others...

You're obviously not going to agree

Christ, how did I know you'd find a way to work my name into this?

Am I really that bad a poster? :( ... I'm sure I'll cope

As for the idea, it's a crap one that would only lead to arguments, resentment even. The people who get to decide who joins won't always see eye to eye either, people get on with different types of people and that will definitely play a big part in the selection process.

You could all just put the people that really irritate you on ignore (as I mentioned to Davo earlier), and rely on the mods to weed out the rest.

I'm with you on this ...

In fairness if I come across a thread that is totally fubar'd I either find another one, or wait to the culprits get tired a (which invariably happens) and then come back to the debate.

we're too soft on newbies i think

If they haven't been promoted after 200 posts they should be banned because they're obviously wasting their time.

The footie forums do need cleaned up...and this season is the season for it. It needs the good regular posters to continue posting, dont let the Ihni binni dimi diniwiny anitaime destroy the threads, report the Ihni binni dimi diniwiny anitaime who take the threads off track, and we'll be along to delete posts/threads/posters.

However, and i want to make this absolutely clear, im not going to ban people simply because they support a different team. The forum would not survive if it was United only posters. It would turn into Red Issue. So, if you are a poster who prefers that environment, feel free to post there instead.

Absolutely spot on in every way.

Will the culling actually happen instead of just getting talked about like the last year, though?

And will opposition supporters who are useless WUMs see the door as quickly as useless MUFC supporters?

The answers to both of these questions will tell whether this will work or not.

If this was really honestly done properly and aggressively, then there would be no need for the new subforum Davo is talking about.

But as Weaste says there has been no will whatsoever to clean the place up, and instead it seems to be a 'free trade in muppets' zone, with newbies getting through for basically being able to spell "United" properly at least half of the time. I think I made my feelings known before when we were trying to decide on standards under the points system.

I'm all for this working out, and I wish the mods the very best of luck. I just would like to see it in action asap.

PS. (bs.?) Sultan, with demotions and bannings there are going to be a lot of feelings hurt as well. Sometimes needs must, really. The nice guy thing has not been working for the last year or so. I fear for the place if we start to lag behind in the race. Thank you for trying, honestly. It is appreciated.

I'd take it as a point of pride, if I were you.

Afrocentricity - Hated By Scousers All Over Wales...

It's just my opinion of you based on anything I can remember you posting. You seem clueless

Naturally you'll disagree...perhaps you can prove me wrong

You know, i'm still baffled as to how you have formed this opinion of me.
Care to elaborate?

I most likely lead the banning race...:nervous:

I'm interested aswell because I think you're a class poster KingEric. It seems like Davo thinks that people that don't agree with him are spastics.

A banning race between you and Blunder is the kind of thing you would only see on one of those parallel world sci fi shows.

The allies still won WWII, right?

Does this mean we can have more witch hunts?

Yes honey. How're you keeping?

BS. I'd like to make it clear that anyone trying to ban Spammy will have to do it over my bent-kneed body.

I like KingEric, he's a very nice lad, but I do tend to disagree with a lot of his footballing opinions.

Yay, witch hunts. As long nobody weighs the same as a duck they'll be fine.

I'm keeping well, my feet aren't (biggest blisters in the history of mankind).

You?

PS. Nobody is trying to ban me (I hope), just a couple of people misdirecting their anxiety and frustration at being left out of the loop.

I did, but it's not happening!

It did happen and the level of discussion had improved before the usual close season idiocy set in. We have been merging threads and trying to keep things on topic as well as being stricter on out and out abuse in the football forums (to mass complaining I might add).

Now that the season has started we will be policing the football forums more.

I think an elite forum is a disaster waiting to happen TBH. It will just make the football discussion even worse on the main forum and drive more decent posters away. We do have a problem with the level of cluelessness and stupidity that occurs in the football forum but I don't think this is the way to deal with it.

Thanks ILBB15. ;)
I think i've only disagreed with Davo a few times. I guess that was more than enough.

A lot of the problem in there is that one group of supporters or the other (yes, I said "or the other") will make a good point, or start a thread about something reasonable, and the other set will then say "well what about 'x'?", or just start spamming with "Champions" or "18-5" or "never won the league at Highbury" or some nonsense.

Although banter is a big part of the point, we all (me included) need to do a better job in guiding threads back onto the topic when possible.

In the MUFC forum it is just a case of the retards drowning out the intelligent posters.

Thank you, btw.

Jason>

The cull has already started. MU1999 (he who believes we have the worst defence) and Gillespie have both been shown the door. I will continue to do that during the season. It wont be pretty at times and no doubt there will be the "why was X banned? thats unfair/hypocritical/you're abusing your power" etc etc type threads. Well, half the Caf is calling for a crackdown on the Ihni binni dimi diniwiny anitaime so no-one should come crying to me if they or one of their e-friends gets booted.

I think we need to get tougher in our choice of newbies. Rep points have been dished out pretty fecking quickly recently with no real chance to check someone out properly before promotion. There have been times i've gone to check an IP on someone only to find he has already been promoted.

In regards to non-United fans getting banned, we have to be slightly more 'thorough'. What i mean is some United fans are quick to shout the word "WUM" if they simply don't agree with someones opinion on a match or a player. It's not very helpful because we have to decide who is genuinely shit stirring and who is worth keeping around.

We have been banning utter muppets but the sheer tide of them has been overwhelming.

And will opposition supporters who are useless WUMs see the door as quickly as useless MUFC supporters?

They already do. We ban the obvious loons and WUM's far more easily than we do United fans and there are actually very few of them who post regualrly. I see little issue with them really in that reducing their numbers will reduce actually football discussion even if they are irritating. I'm not going to say who but we have permanently canned 2 of the worst long term WUM's this week :)

The answers to both of these questions will tell whether this will work or not.

The newbie was always meant as a way to filter out returnees, WUM's and invasions. Aclimatisation to the site was a stated aim but TBH I think it did nothing to prepare people for the main forum. It is actually working very well as is IMO.

I'm all for this working out, and I wish the mods the very best of luck. I just would like to see it in action asap.

Bannings and demotions piss off people who they effect. Tough shit IMO. An elite forum will piss off everyone not included. If it was going to happen I think it should be a simple user pays so if you are serious enough to want to pay a smallish fee then you can enter the "elite forum". Bear in mind Red Issue did this and they are even more shit than they used to be.

We are going to try to moderate the football forums more strictly this year. Lets see how we go. The problem is that everyone now has the Internet and a ludicrous opinion to share.

We are concerned about this sort of stuff and we have been discussing it. Hopefully we can get it more under control.

I don't think there are many that need sorting out. The caf wouldn't be the same without the rival fans. They keep the football forum alive at times and most are quite knowledgable.
One of the few obvious idiots is Gillespie but he seems to have gone of his own accord.

I love you both. As I told you elsewhere, Blunder, this even extends to love in a gay way. Thank you.

I've been whinging for the better part of a year, so hopefully I can shut up now I'm getting what I've been whinging for (I'll try!).
