New forum for football talk

No I agree, but that's why I wasn't requesting anyone be banned! Just wondering what precisely it is you're looking to get rid of; it's easy to say it in theory, but how does it play out in practice. And I've picked out Gus and Rubberman (hell for fairness I'll throw myself in the mix, my views are considered and usually expressed at some length to give a full impression of what I mean to get across, some like my style while others clearly don't) as case studies to help establish an idea of what this 'cull' will shape up as in reality

It's not about personalities, more to do with content...

Insults

Harassment

Personal abuse

Unnecessarily starting duplicate threads

Going off topic

Etc...

You don't get it.

This is like when you tried to tell me I had no right to have an opinion on the newbie forum, in spite of being one of the newbie scouts and thus actually a part of the newbie system.

You don't get it. You were shopping Rubber and Gus. It was pretty obvious. That kind of stuff we don't need.

Complete nonsense. I think this place would be a poorer place without the Rubberman. Gus has gone slightly mental of recent times, but previously I rated his contribution highly. I asked a reasonable question to the moderators to get an understanding of what they seek to achieve and how they intend to do it.

I wouldn't expect you to recognise this, but it's actually you doing the shit stirring at the moment here

Ay understood, but is that the actual problem with the football forums currently? Or is it not just a case of too many weak contributions? You take action for the things listed above now anyway, it doesn't sound like too much will change

If you had seen the quality of the forums a couple of years ago, and then today, you wouldn't even recognise the place.

It is muppet central now. That's the main problem.

Indeed I recognise this, but that's my point, what Sultan lists as 'offences' I don't feel actually addresses the main problem and the one that causes the most grief to the good posters of the forum. Which for the purposes of my contribution here I shamelessly included myself as! :)

I think the 'etc' included post-lobotamal retardation.

I see where you are coming from Brad. GB today canned a poster for a very weak contribution, but that was blatantly obvious...but it will be a tough call making right decisions. What maybe a weak contribution to me may not necessarily be the case - after all, forums are about sharing differing opinions.

We will also have to be particularly careful with our foreign contingent whose English might not be as polished as those born in English speaking countries.

I doubt any of these posters would be banning candidates. In any case most bannings will occur through the accumulation of infraction points which gives people a chance to modify their behaviour which is of course what we want.

The hardest posters to deal with are the hoard of CM era kids who don't really do anything worth an infraction but also add nothing while swamoing football "discussion". I think some old fashioned modding involving trying to keep threads on topic is in order.

Have you considered, or could you consider changing the rules on posting to stop, or reduce, any CM-based discussion outside of the general/entertainment forums.

Add that any posts arguing that 'X is good in CM/FM so we should buy him' will be deleted or the poster given a temp ban from said forum?

Informally this already happens. I think it is a very good idea that any and all CM discussions happen in the entertainment forum since it is a game. And general muppetry is going to be jumped on in the football forums.

If the new 'elite' football forum is up, i would like to request atleast viewing privileges, as i probably don't have any notereity amongst most here (to be allowed to post), save for plech, who btw hasn't posted here in forever it seems. I ask this because i used to enjoy reading the football forum to increase my knowledge of the game, but its tedious these days sifting through the shite.

Good to know.

If we come across any duplicate threads that have not been merged, should we PM a mod, or request a merging in this forum?

The report post function is probably best since it goes to all of us.

I really really really doubt that such a forum will eventuate.

They'll just hide the CM crap by saying "I watch a lot of Ukranian Division 2", or the old classic from MUFC187, "I work in football".

The muppetry is going to be nigh on impossible to crack down on, the more I think about it.

I do find the United and Football Forum quite tedious and downright repetitive most often than not these days. This elitist bollocks is taking it a bit far though, You could just have resorted to FAO threads in either ones and have politely asked those who you do not wish to join in those threads to stay out of it (provided that thread itself doesn't resort into 'external(s)' insult)

Every said poster in that list I bet has had his fair share of spasticity which although may be less than the current levels, it still is the same tank of spastics

You only need to keep it down to a degree whereby the sensible posters keep posting. CM muppets used to leave quite quickly becaise of the piss take. Now they are in the majority it is harder (pun very much intended).

I think it is a cultural change with the MySpace generation masses mistaking the freedom to comment for "I am obligated to ramble on all the time and at great length using txt speak on every subject that I have no idea about"

That would be utterly impossible.

"FAO Only People I Want To Talk To".

The only ways really are the pay forum thing (which unfortunately would make the 'standard' football forums worse), or getting really tough on idiots.

The key is going to be for the mods to recognise the idiots from the occassionally misguided or wrong. There's a big difference, but it can appear subtle.

Mind you, I bet most of us who try to fight the shite in the footie forums could make our own list of a couple dozen people really fast. :nervous:

This is probably true. I never really thought of the generational thing until you and Geebs said it tonight.

One thing is that as the crackdown on the forums occurs, the traditional way that muppetry has been dealt with will return - and that's everyone pointing and laughing. As arguably we saw (perhaps to the extreme) in the Henry thread, that causes its own set of problems.

This is how it was when I first joined - things like the destruction of devilish being some of the 'greatest' moments in the Caf. I guess it is about the level of abuse, and the level of self-winduperry that occurs. I'd be sad to see the forums sterilised from banter or teasing the idiots.

But better those problems than the problem of the likes of quality posters like Blythy being driven out by abuse from the retards and transfer freaks.

No, you could get the list out in the open, give it some spastic group name and get on with the 'FAO <spastic group name>' threads. You would have the odd bloke barging in so tell him to feck out off the thread, an little effort from your part to ensure you get what you want plus something which anyone from that list can do and hence not requiring moderation. A bit tedious, but at least it stops all the elitist thing, which may not be intentional but it clearly feels so. If you are so sure about the definition of a quality thread, then set examples of it with whom you believe will help you and thus influence the place in the right way

I can guarantee that access to the mods photos is in no way a privilege.

He he he

But access to the photoshopped ones surely would be?

I think part of the problem in the United forum is that we've been playing pretty well recently so there really isn't much to discuss. So instead we get threads about kit numbers and Anderson not getting a Charity shield medal..

Wait until we lose a couple of games...

With the influx of retards in the last year or so, it will be like a murder in a way this place has never seen before.

RE opposition fans. Most them aren't very good. They've helped spoil the football forum. Jazz, Spammy and a couple of others are the only decent ones. The rest write out incoherent sentences followed by a million green smilies.

Hey, Jason.

Whilst reading through this thread I noticed you saying about being particularly ill recently - is that a recent deterioration or just describing your longer-term meds etc. situation?

If it's a recent problem now somewhat in remission then congrats - I often disagree with you - but wish you better.

Is there any chance that a crackdown in modding would also crack down on threads where there's about 10 posts after a joke that are just  ??

Sure the original post is usually funny, but reading 10 posts of a little green laughing fecker isn't exactly interesting.

I'm sure the mods get paid. Who the hell would put up with all that shit for free?

They don't get paid....and that's their point as well.

It's not a real job, it's something they do voluntarily.
