He's a great keeper but for me the best keeper of the modern era has been Buffon. Neuer I always feel has a mistake in him although he is capable of fantastic performances.

Redknapp getting excited at Neuer kicking/palming away a few shots straight at him last night. The commentator even said he was "superhuman" when he simply moved his feet to kick a shot right at his feet

He made one really good save last night, and I actually think he should save the 2nd goal. Hes one of the best around and has been for a few years but I don't think hes the best goalkeeper ever.

Great keeper but I find him overrated. Buffon for me is comfortably a class above at his peak.

He is without a doubt the most complete goal keeper I have ever seen. The peak of anticipation goalkeepers.

In my lifetime van Breukelen, Peter Shilton, Peter Schmeichel, van der Sar, Buffon and Iker are the best goal keepers I have seen. Neuer is in that category.

He's not even the best keeper in the world currently, let alone ever.

Not going to join the whole "greatest ever" discussion but how anyone can seriously claim that all shots were right at Neuer last night is beyond me. Just look at the replays for these. If you've ever stood in goal in your life, you'll realize that none of these were easy saves and some were straight up ridiculous. So for this topic to get bumped after last night to point out that Neuer is shit just seems crazy to me.

(wait for the replays)

He's not as good as Buffon has been during his career. Buffon is the best I have seen, and there are probably other keepers who were better than him before (or, at least better for their time): Zoff, Yashin, Banks.

The best overreaction to a save I've heard was when Niall Quinn was on commentary for City Vs CSKA a few seasons back and Joe Hart flailed to save a shot, only for the ball to hit his standing leg and Quinn declare it one of the best saves he'd ever seen.

Neuer saved the World Cup for Germany against Algeria and nobody else in the world would have that night. Good enough for me.

Buffon is the best at commanding his area that I have seen and organising his defence but they are different goal keepers.

Buffon has always played for teams that played in low defensive blocks. If I wanted a goalkeeper for a team playing a high defensive line I would pick Neuer every single time over Buffon because he is better at covering large spaces. Neuer is also far better with his feet than Buffon ever has been in his career.

If you want your team to build from the back and play a very high line I doubt anyone would take Buffon over Neuer. It's simply not Buffons strenght.

Reflexes I would give to buffon. Iker is the best reflex goal keeper I have seen in my life but his basics for goalkeeping where never top notch which is why he has declined so much once he lost his reflexes with age.

Overall I think Buffon is probably the best goalkeeper with the best basics I have seen because bar playing with his feet he has no weakness.

At his peak he couldand his box, was good in the air, excellent reflexes, great handling and was secure and didn't make many mistakes.

Neuer is probably the most intimidating goalkeeper I've ever seen. He's freakishly big and strong, I bet you don't see much of the goal behind if you're a striker through on goal against him.

I don't think he beats Schmeichel in that regard. Schmeichel and Buffon are the best keepers I have seen in the last 30 years or so. Neuer is on the level below, along with Casillas, VDS and a few others including De Gea.

Jeez, take the blinkers off.

DDG (who i presume you consider the best?) hasnt even been the best keeper in the PL this season, let alone the world.

Also not going into the whole "greatest" discussion but last night performance was great. Yeah, he probably could react a little bit better for the second but he was the reason why Bayern weren't trashed.

This second save is especially impressive, kind a Schmeichel type of keeping. Standing big or imposing himself in front of the attacker and than that brilliant right hand reflex save.

Redknapp is right for once, he is the most complete goalie I've seen. Him basically playing as a sweeper as well makes him a lot more exposed, and he's had a few howlers, but so has any other goalie in the world.

That 2nd vid is insane!

How many times do we hear the phrase 'got a good strong hand to it'? That save has got to be one of the best examples of that I've ever seen.

Great username/location by the way

Haha thanks man, I've got a topic on here where I share my music.

In regards to that second video, people were actually claiming it's an easy save because it's straight at him.

Currently Buffon, but Neuer is only 31. Think when Neuer ends his career, he will be regarded as the best ever by a lot of people.

neuer possible the best in the world right now but better than Peter the Great, Gordon Banks, Peter Shilton in his prime, or even Pat Jennings and Lev Yashin, don't make me laugh. Redknapp is one of the oafs who think football was invented in 1993

I wouldn't call it an outrage. Even at 28 he has won the world cup, 3 german titles, 3 german cups, 1 CL and for a good 3 years he has been the best keeper in the world.

His distribution and sweeper skills are bar none.

Over the last 25 years the only keepers that are his level are Buffon, Kahn and Schmikes.

Cech and Iker are level below.

Casillas has won it all, he may not be at the level he once was, but it's quite extraordinary you put him a level below in keepers of the last 25 years. Can't agree with that at all, he's easily in the top tier for all time great goalkeepers.

Nah, but you're entitled to your opinion. Let's just put our fingers in our ears and close our eyes everyone Neuer fecks up, he's good at kicking though right?

No. Schmeichel was more imposing, better at controlling the box, better one on one and a better shot stopper.
Buffon makes less mistakes, and I find your claim that Schmeichel was a better shot stopper very debatable.

Buffon probably makes less mistakes as Schmeichel did make a few, but his out of this saves made up for it combined with him completely bossing the box unlike any other. He was a better shot stopper.

Can you show me an example of a save from Schmeichel which I haven't seen from Buffon?

Like with most goalkeepers (and centerbacks) his standing will rise once he retires. As long as you're still active people will jump at every tiny mistake you make claiming that the legends of the would never have made so many mistakes.
Given that the game has become increasingly harder and Neuer has the best skill set in regards to the modern game while having quite a few years in his prime left, he might as well go down as the greatest ever.

However as long as he continues with that pathetic offside waving after nearly every goal he concedes (or blaming teammates) I cheer for every ball that goes into his net. Smug bellend.
