Nemanja Matic| BBC says deal agreed

Clearly, if Chelsea allow him to join us it's because they're looking to upgrade on that position. I can't imagine them letting us have Eden Hazard.

So Mata was a cast off as well?

:wenger:

I'd certainly take Matic over Dier.

As for how good a signing he'd be, it depends on whether you think he can rediscover the form he showed a couple of years ago. If he did then he'd be an excellent buy.

If he doesn't? Rather more underwhelming.

Can't say I've watched Chelsea enough to comment on him this season. I here a lot of Fellaini comparisons but they are nothing alike, for one Matic can pass.. well! Only down side don't remember him at all in the 3 games against us last season. Kante could have been playing there alone from all I can remember.

I mean shit I'd rather have Fabinho due to his age and better mobility but saying Matic is a slight upgrade on Fellaini is crazy.

Maybe this will jog your clearly poor memory

2013–14 season
Under new Chelsea manager José Mourinho, Mata spent a lot of time on the bench. Mourinho preferred Oscar as a playmaker, and suggested Mata needed to adapt to a wider position and to working harder defensively.[73] On 28 September 2013, Mata came on as a half-time substitute against Tottenham Hotspur to assist John Terry to score an equaliser in a 1–1 draw,[74] but his appearances in the first team remained infrequent. On 29 October, he scored his first goal of the season in a 2–0 League Cup victory at London rivals Arsenal.[75]

Mata struggled to secure a regular first-team place under Mourinho as he had started just 11 of Chelsea's 22 Premier League matches.

He was benched then sold off, mourinho didn't want him. It's not like they called him a Chelsea flop

Same principle both are extremely derogatory terms and to use it to describe Chelsea's then back to back player of the year is madness

Doesn't matter if he was player of the year 20 times - in 2014 he had a manager who didn't want him, wasn't playing him and the club were more than happy for him to leave. That makes him a cast off in the same way that despite all his achievements in the past most of our fans would like to cast off Wayne Rooney this summer.

He didn't fit into the manager's plans. His seasons pre-mourinho are irrelevant. An upgrade of the player doesn't necessarily hold a negative connotation. It's possible they are just looking for someone more suited to Conte's plans.

100% agree which is why calling Matic a cast off isn't a correct definition of his situation at Chelsea should he leave

Meh. Probably under rating Matic having been ill with muppet fever over Fabinho. But they (Fellaini and Matic) excite me the all the same - not at all.

No I'm arguing against anyone using that term

Fair enough, I misunderstood. For what it's worth I think Matic could do a job for us and he's worked with Mourinho before. I would imagine his relationship last season with Mourinho during the difficult period will determine how likely this transfer is to happen.

He'll be 29 before the seasons starts. And he has looked fairly crap the last times I've seen him, more limited than ever.

Not exactly a dream signing. Still, he used to be a very effective player. If there's something to this, Mourinho presumably reckons he's capable of regaining that sort of form - and he knows the player well, obviously.

If he can, he'll be a decent enough addition.

Why is it looking more likely? This thread hasn't been bumped for 2 weeks
Nothing really, just the fact we don't seem to have an interest in Fabinho, not being linked with any other DMs of note, we need a DM, sounds like Chelsea are open to offers and Jose has always rated him.

This and the Dier links seem strange.
As if a rival would sell us one of their players, unless it's for very silly money

Matic was brilliant at one point but that seems to be a distant memory and, for me, a weird feeling that it now looks like a hardcore purple patch. Coz before those couple of seasons, and since, he's been pretty invisible/forgettable.

That said, depends on the price. I certainly would rather Matic than Dier but it all comes to down to price and availability. I'd rather spend 40million on Matic than 50million or more on Dier to Daniel Levy, neither will take us to the next level so we may as well save ourselves a bit of cash in the process of going nowhere in midfield terms.

Good enough to win a couple titles with Chelsea, but good enough for the 6th best team in the league? Hell nah.

He gave his best years to Chelsea, now it is only going downhill. He is easily replaceable in that Chelsea team for quite some time now.

They have Bakayoko coming and using our name to find suitors for him.

Only after he went to United he did, :D Juan Mata, finally one of the trusted players under Mourinho, played a lot and started the EL Finale.

Back to the thread. Matic is declining but can offer a solid option covering for Pogba and Herrera on that centre midfield slot. Squad player at best. Personally I prefer not and instead opt to give chances to Blind, the kids or new recruit.
