Nemanja Matic| BBC says deal agreed

The one thing against Matic is age. He will be 29 this summer and that means the peak window is closing. Would prefer a younger player.

I don't believe it. His performances for Chelsea last season were straight up mutinous and sabotage.

Its looking increasingly like the most important position to replace, discussed to death, is the one where we have the worst shortlist. Fabinho to City, Nainggolan not interested or even a DM right now, Dier predictably hard to prise away from Levy, so now we are down to Matic? I mean, really? What happened to realistic transfer targets? Good scouting?

Oh and anyone know where Paredes is heading?

I'd rather go for Dier than Matic. Why would Chelsea sell him anyway, doesn't he start for them?

fecking ridiculous... isn't a bit too late?

everybody knew he was the man we needed back then, but we got Fellaini instead.

But now we need to replace Carrick with a world class DM, not a Matic.

Hopefully this is just lazy guff like the Willian stories and even Fabregas for a while, kinda like the lazy stuff linking us to every Dutch national team player when LvG was our manager.

I love Nainngolan but is he really a pure DM? Always seemed more box-to-box for me. Which is problematic given that we're specifically looking for a properly defensive DM to free up Herrera to be more box-to-box and Pogba to attack.

Either way, Matic isn't leaving Chelsea this summer.

No.

The MEN story seems far from lazy guff, even suggesting deal is close.

Some people in here need to get down from their high horse. If Fabinho isnt gettable then we need to look at who's next on the gettable list. We just finished 6th and the market isnt packed with Kantes. Surely Matic is a pretty good player.

I Hate the spoiled brat mentality in here

If we do get him, I think he'd be a great person for TFM to learn off of.

Plus hes in his prime, would immediately improve our midfield too.

Matic signing wouldn't make sense unless we're playing a 3 man midfield - which I doubt for a couple reasons.

Mourinho's preferred system is the 4231, and signing Griezmann would imply us playing a 4231. In a 4231 too Matic is left footed and plays on the left side of midfield - same area Pogba plays.

Matic is not world class?

I think he will walk into many top teams in Europe when he's in form. Fantastic player.

In a 4-2-3-1, I will give the Carrick / Herrera/ Fellaini role (most defence cover role of the midfield pack) in the last season to Matic. He will kill it.

Getting any DM for the sake of filling the role is bad business. The case with Schneiderlin is one such example - very good player but never really fitted in. We need a younger Carrick who sets the tone, calm presence and one who doesn't buckle under pressure.

The left side of midfield is only when played in a 3-man midfield. In a 2-man midfield this isn't the case.

At least any video I've seen of Pogba talking about preferring the left side it's always been in reference to a 3 man midfield.

It's less so in a 2 man midfield because the players are more reserved, sure, but both of these players are more comfortable on the left side of the field. It's natural for players to prefer to play on their stronger side. I don't think Pogba has played on the right side - even in a 4231 - more than once or twice this season. If that.

The funny thing with this is that Pogba isn't actually left footed, his right is his primary foot.

I agree. I remember him playing on the right with Matuidi on the left for France, but not something he has done regularly.

That's a fair point but I think Pogba being is given more preference to play where he wants, and usually his midfield partner isn't has commanding as he is, so they take whichever role they are assigned afterwards.
Not that it matters though, if a player is good enough they should be able to play on either side of a 2-man midfield.

Jose has spoken multiple times about the future and forgetting the past, he isn't going to sign a Chelsea player.

Matic is quality, but we aren't signing him and Fabinho. Makes no sense to get two CDMs.
