Nathaniel Clyne | Signed for Liverpool

Do we really need a right back? It's the least of my concerns, especially if it's a 21 year old from the Championship.

He's a fullback, plays both positions.

Christ, can't let Man Ham United outbid the club, if indeed the transfer fee cues the actual transfer and not the player's wishes of more matches. Get in there Gill/SAF and get the lad if you covet his signature. Offer 3m plus add-ons. Done.

If we seriously are in for Baines then I don't mind if we don't sign him. With Baines in OT we will be well stocked in fullback positions.

This has been going on for so many months with so many clubs "in for" him. Now with these comments it wouldn't surprise me if it was all bogus info leaked by the club to try and drum up the fee / interest.

He's primarily a right back. Evra is a full back, it doesn't mean he can play both positions equally, does it?

Clyne is a right back who can play also as a left back, like Fabio. Although Fabio has played mroe as left back because he chose it to don't make concurrence with Rafael for the right back spot.

Fabio is actually supposed to be the other way around, funnily enough, though he has seemed more competent at right back.

I know he can play left back, but that's not his best position, right back is. And like you said, we already HAVE Fabio, why sign Clyne?

I mean, I wouldn't mind us signing him, but I'd rather sort ourselves out in the short term with Baines rather than take a punt on another youngster who isn't even really a left back and hope to god Evra can still play 50 games next season.

No, Fabio started playing as left back because he was better than Rafael and didn't want to compete with him for the right back spot. Now, he is a left back but again his natural position is on the right side. Anyway, there are/were many players who can play in both positions wery good (Zambrotta and Lahm in top of my mind).

I would also like to buy an established left back rather than Clyne. I doubt that Clyne can become better than any Da Silva twins and we also need a left back to act as cover/challenger of Evra, so I don't get the point of buying him. When fabio will return and in addition with Smalling and Jones who will get some games as right back, I don't see where can play Clyne. Unless he will be a cover of RaFabio for the future.

Baines is far too expensive for short term.

Clyne hasn't impressed me so miuch, and I watched a lot of Palace last year. It's not to say he won't develop into a good player mind, he's still very young. One criticism I'd level at him is that he's very one footed. So, to say he can play on the left is interesting... I wouldn't play him there.

Another doubt I have about him is that he can be a bit of a headless chicken at times, in regards to picking out teamates with the ball in the attacking 3rd of the pitch.

On the plus side... He's got great energy, and good determination.

Well yes, this is essentially what I'm getting at. Clyne can play left back of course, not as effectively as right back, but he's still only 21 and wouldn't solve the problems we have there, and we do have problems there right now. Baines may not be everyone's cup of tea but we do need an established left back at the club.

He's 28, hardly 'short term'. We don't even know the price, and other clubs have spent far more on far worse of late.

EDIT: Still 27, actually

He has some great raw talent...at his age the headless chicken thing can be ironed out. Would ahve liked to have seen how he'd get on here.

I'd think if we were (still?) interested in Clyne then he would've been an announced done deal before even Kawaga and Powell.

SSN sources also claimed that Hazard preferred to move to Manchester United. We all know how that story ended.

What exactly happen here? Many reports had us signing him subject to a tribunal fee but it seems that it never even materialise in the first place

Apparently Southampton are on the verge of signing him, which confused me.

He so good he could come to United, but not so good that he'd go to Southampton? Of course he's more or less guaranteed first team football with Soton, but isn't he just going to become top four standard in a couple of years and move on again anyway?

It's no longer a problem - we'll just play Robbie Brady at left back. Solved.

:(

Would be a no risk signing, low fee and low wages. If it didn't work out we would get our money back. He looked really good against us.

Kyle Walker was a similar signing for Spurs and he's doing alright for himself.

Sensible signing IMO.

Didn't need him

Muppet season is brilliant

If he signed for Southampton and other clubs were I for him he must have been promised first team football. Plenty of teams that would use him as rotation until their established full back leaves/retires.

My points are valid, would have been a decent signing and he did look good against us. We don't need him however.

Great now even Southampton are beating us for our long term targets. Lucas Moura will join Stoke

Yeah, because that's our long term plan.

Jesus cnuting Christ.

:confused:I don't get it.

Are you saying a young full back at Crystal Palace was part of our long term plans?

As opposed a young full back we are bringing through the ranks at OT?

Surely if you are on the books at United you have a better chance of being in the managers 'long term plans'?

Brady isn't a fullback. He's a winger.
