Alan Smith :)

Well if we ignore clubs being relegated in the same season - I can think of the following during Fergusons era

Ralph Milne (!)
Lee Sharpe - he was a talent but broke in the first team within a few months
Dion Dublin - signed from Cambridge

who else ?

Roy Carroll

Denis Irwin came from Oldham, Schmeichel came from a poor Danish , Johnson & Solskjaer from the Norwegian league

Doesnt matter where they come from as long as they have the talent and the attitude to progress

Look at the kid McClean at Sunderland, he was playing part-time for Derry City a year ago, now he's going to the Euros

Exaclty. Look at the Ox at Arsenal. I think we would all have him at United in a heartbeat.

Johnsen came from Besiktas :)

Johnsen was such a great find. Brilliant scouting.

Gone very quiet for a while with Clyne. Some saw the deal as in the bag.

A shock that has been going on for at least 6 months...

Seriously, if we sign Clyne I cannot see us going for Baines too...

I'd be happy with Baines for anything around £8m, but the £20m they're quoting is just ludicrous.

Plus I'd rather we got a young player to develop, like Clyne.

We have Evra who isnt going anywhere just yet and Baines isnt an improvement imo.

In fact their respective weaknesses are very very similar. I think Baines is a bit of a match of the day type. A few Everton fans I know have said the same to me. According to them he got murdered on numerous occasions by wingers this season.

Yeah, it would be crazy to spend silly money on a 28 year old left back who isn't any better than Patrice.

sportskeeda... seems legit.

Looks like a bollocks article alright. No quotes and nothing more than we already know, pure speculation. I have been watching Clyne a lot this season and I am not convinced by him, I know he is young but Raf seems a better prospect to me at the moment. Maybe for £2.5M he's worth a punt.

Clyne transfer has been pretty much touted as certain for a couple of months, he will move eventually - the only real question is if we'll agree a deal with Crystal Palace or leave it to the tribunal. Either way it'll be around £2m to £3m.

Just out of interest about Baines, why would we loan out a young exciting left back who's frustrated with the lack of first team football, and then bring in an established premier league fullback, who will be equally as frustrated, if we're unhappy with Evra, Fabio won't be loaned out, simple really.

Clyne on the other hand, would be a good signing because of his age.

It's my understanding that he has played there a few times for palace and done well, not seen it for myself though.

I think he played left back for England U21's a few times, only seen him play right back for Palace when they've been on.

We still need cover at LB.

Kagawa, CM(?), Powell, Clyne & Baines.

I'd be happy enough with that.

We don't need two fullbacks. Clyne would be my first option. If we can wrap the deal up soon, we should stop worrying about buying more defenders and focus on a CDM.

So is this guy the finished article? Seems hard to believe given he's playing the lower leagues. Last thing we need is another right back that still has years to go before reaching his peak. We have Rafael and Fabio for that, or even Jones if that's where he ends up playing.

No one is the finished article at 19. Fabio is going on loan. Rafael and Clyne would be good options as right back. And we have enough cover with Jones and Smalling capable of playing right back while Clyne is also capable of playing left back.

Read that West Ham are close to completing a deal for him?

Apparently he wants to stay in London and play all the time - two things we would accomplish at WHU that he wouldn't necessarily with us.

Crystal Palace are ready to offload defender Nathaniel Clyne, who has been linked with several Premier League teams.

The 21-year-old defender is out of contract at Selhurst Park but Palace would receive a compensation fee due to his age.

Manchester United, Newcastle, Reading and West Ham have all been linked with a move for the England Under-21 international but a fee for his services remains a sticking point.

Eagles chairman Steve Parish said: "We need to do a deal with Clyne. There is a bit of action in the background and we know there is a lot of interest.

"It is just about sorting out who it is best to go to and who will put the right money on the table. We're all working to get an outcome.

"Clubs don't want to go down the tribunal route. It is a game of cat and mouse on the fee - we've just got to let that play out."
