The sort of incisive comment that the Caf thrives on.

I agree with other posters that Rafael is very overrated by United fans. I think this is because he is such a likeable little chap who throws himself into each game with such gusto. Unfortunately this strength is also perhaps his greatest weakness as his 'hot headedness' and forgetfulness when it comes to positioning, marking and the offside rule often let him down. I can recall more games recently where he has cost us points than ones where he has earned them.

There need not be anymore said if you think clyne is better than rafael. You are telling me that you have personally scouted clyne? No ofcourse not. You just think he is better as an assumption, the same way my assumption is that rafael is better. Every day after a match this season, i see a journalist who highlights rafaels importance to us.

My lack of comment was because there was no need to argue against just drivel.

PLEASE TELL ME ALL OF YOU UNDERSTAND THAT RAFAELs injury might not necessarily be his fault just like rojos was not his fault. Lets get a good cover but replacing him is unnecessary when we should be adding quality to our cbs and cms.

Seamus Coleman is the best RB in the league imho but I wouldn't say no to Clyne either if the decision was taken to axe Rafael

2:1 against westbrom where he plays Berahino onside. Losing the header for the 3:1 against leichester. I am not saying that he is sole responsible for these goals, but he played his part. Its a myth that he is always top class when he plays. He makes his fair share of mistakes on a regular basis, but usually nobody talks about them. He is a solid defender but nothing more, considering the level we are talking about. In combination with his injury record, this becomes a real problem.

He was our covering defender, it was rojo that created the space. That ball should not have been played, we opened up like a whore in amsterdam.

Rafael is a bit overrated on here in my opinion. Every time a new right back gets mentioned people jump to his defence and claim he's better, but his performances haven't backed that up for a long time.
Agreed.

Why should it matter what others think of united players when they do not regularly watch us? He has had a knock in training and suddenly that is his fault?!

People do regularly watch you. Just because we don't support United doesn't mean we din't regularly watch you. You're one of the top four teams that is most often shown on the tele, naturally people will watch you more because of that.

Have we forgotten Fergie's last year then?

We can talk about last year, but everyone was shite. Carrick was great in Fergie's last year, but dipped the following year. Is he overrated as well?

so we rate players now always by their best year? What about 10/11, 11/12 or 13/14? These seasons dont matter at all?

Carrick played very good for a extended period of time.

He kept getting chances because it was clear he had it in him. Injuries kept stopping him. He got a good run under Fergie's last year and played around 40 games. He has started this season well as well.

Maybe he is over the hill? He is 33 after all.

We'll have to wait and see I guess. I'm not going to judge him after a season where he played under Moyes and was basically playing midfield by himself.

Why should we axe him? We should add a RB to be a backup for Rafael or to be a starter with Rafael as a backup..
Theres no point buying a 'backup' to any position (apart from GK). We should always buy to challenge or improve the position. Rafael is injured far too often to be useful to the team. If he can improve that situation, great. If he continues to be regularly injured, get rid.

At this stage it doesn't actually matter whether Rafael is underrated or overrated.

His injury problems alone mean we need to sign another RB. Rafael can compete with the new guy and, if he is as good as we hope, he'll overcome the challenge. If he isn't good enough to earn his place under serious competition then we'll have replaced him with a better player. Either way, we win.

Rafael will either prove to be good enough or he won't. The real issue here is that we can't afford to be this exposed while we're waiting for him to prove it one way or the other. As GB said, there's no point in just signing a back up either.
The ideal situation is the one Chelsea currently enjoy with Ivanovic, Azpilicuetta and Luis competing for three spots. Notice they didn't just gift the position to their talented young fullback, if he dips in form or gets injured he'll have serious competition for his place.

Coleman would be the ideal PL RB for us to sign but I definitely agree that a player who could compete for either fullback position would be useful. Quality is more important though.

Janmaat would be more realistic, cheaper and more experienced than Clyne, i think.

Then we will have to buy 2 RBs, not one.

We should go for Darmian, liked what i saw from him at the WC. If he plays like that week in week out, he would be our best optzion and wouldnt be as expensive as Clyne.

If Rafael isn't available enough to be trusted as first choice (in this scenario where we replace him in the first team) then what exactly would be the point in keeping him as a back up? A back up who's barely fit?
