Nathaniel Clyne | Signed for Liverpool

Clyne is like Glen Johnson. Good going forward but against good opposition can be found out defensively.

I'll be delighted if he's like Glen Johnson at his peak. Just not Glen Johnson of the last few seasons.

Happy enough with Clyne. About the level I'd expect us to sign at right back, there aren't many great ones available so not much more we can do.

Holy feck

The fact that Hodgson picked Jones and Henderson at rb over Clyne, tells you everything you need to know.

Hodgson is a moron though.

I don't think Clyne is anything special but I don't think we could have done much better at right back either. Not much out there unfortunately.

Well yeah, that is of course very true

Shaw has been average when I have seen him, and given you lot paid £30m plus hardly value for money!

Clyne is one of the best young prospects in the league - and given we are into 42 pages on here, it's odd everyone suddenly thinks he is crap.

He isn't tied to a long term contract hence the price.

Lets not pretend you've watched him eh, because if you had, you'd know whatever body else who's watched him knows... Shaw is a very good player who will only get better. You'll also find many United fans on here who didn't want Clyne, and that was when it was us being linked with him before Liverpool had even been mentioned. Not a bad buy for Liverpool- it's an upgrade on Johnson afterall- but definitely a class below the level of player United can and will get.

Glen Johnson at his peak still had many flaws.

He did indeed. Don't disagree with your summary of him, just saying I'd take that version of him any day.

Current day Johnson is shit going forward and shite defensively.

Not a sudden change of tune. When he was heavily linked to United, there were pages and pages of people moaning about us going for him.

What right back do you think you'll get? Genuinely curious, as far as I can tell there isn't really any full backs available who are a class above Clyne.

If you're talking about your level of signing generally then fair enough, I agree.

I don't think we'll go for one now this summer.

Darmian is better than Clyne but we've not being linked to him for a long time so looks like it's another season of Tony V at RB for us

Yeah you have a point Bob in that there really don't seem to be that many available of the desired level. Personally though, I'd rather give Rafael another season with Valancia as back-up. Big if, but we've already got a very good right-back if Rafael can stay fit. Not that that's ideal but I'd honestly rather give that another chance than spend money on the likes of Clyne.

Wouldn't be surprised if United's alleged interest in Firmino, Clyne and Ings was entirely fictional. And now they can come up with the narrative of said players essentially 'snubbing' United to join Liverpool. Already seen that argument made by a few gullible Liverpool supporters on the interwebs.

Understandable. I think Clyne is a great signing for us because our options are so poor there currently but I wouldn't be in any rush to sign him if I was Man Utd manager.

I'm beginning to think it might be the same case with Turan as well.

I think he is good player for £15ish mil., they'll definitely improve in that position now that they have him instead of Johnson, IMO. I don't think he is perfect but I would definitely have him over Valencia as RB.

Ahh the Liverpool forum is fun reading atm, they have really got their swagger back with this recent clutch of signings.

But reality is it's- Milner for Gerrard, Firmino for Sterling, Clyne for Johnson, Bogdan for Jones, and Ings for Lambert/Balloteli, to me only the Clyne one would be a proper upgrade, Firmino might be but it could go either way, Bogdan maybe too but that hardly counts.

They need alot more yet before they get ahead of where they were last season for me.

Milner for Gerrard is a definite upgrade in my opinion, Gerrard was an utter liability last season.

Gerrard was their top scorer, says a lot really doesn't it.

Squaka doesnt show how many brainfarts Valencia had over the course of the season. The database would explode

Clyne isnt impressive, he's just not quite as dodgy

Good defender however he would be a great signing if we were still outside Champions League, without financial support from Adidas and with some budget cuts here and there but now ? We need to start using full range of Manchester United's influence. Bigger fish to fry, please.

Yeah, I'd say that's fair enough. I was probably being harsh saying he's average. It was a combination of the gobshite Liverpool fans on here (yourself not included) and the fact I'd be really underwhelmed had we signed him. I'm sure he'll be a decent signing for Liverpool though.

I totally agree, we should be aiming higher than Clyne. But if it was a straight up choice between signing him or sticking with Raf and Valencia, i know which option i'd opt for.

I agree, he's a truly useful player for Southampton but not their most important one. We had Patrice Evra in similar age who was already a finished article for a side back plus one of leaders in AS Monaco at that time who made with his club to CL final.

That lad Fabinho is 21 and already played at CL level and has that sweet experience of tearing Arsenal apart in Europe.

For what its worth I didn't want him as he started looking dodgy/par by March, after the hype died down. This signing could easily go down the Lovren road.

Fingers crossed it doesn't.

I wanted United to sign him but he didn't impress for England at all. Jones getting selected ahead of him and then Henderson getting put to right back before him didn't look good either.

That is a worry too (despite Bodgson being Bodgson).

Good signing by Pool. Gets the job done which is pretty much what you want from your fullbacks.

Indeed. Although I'd say Firmino will likely be an upgrade on Sterling. Mainly because I think Sterling is so massively over rated and average that it would be hard NOT to be an upgrade on him. I will laugh if Man City blow £50m on him... he'll never be much more than he currently is. He'll likely score a few more goals (more chances and some of them have to go in eventually) and that will be enough for some, but I would be so disappointed if we bought him. Clyne over Johnson is an upgrade, again because the player he is replacing is so awful. At 24 he's not "young", decent purchase for £12.5m but won't be a huge upgrade.
