Nathaniel Clyne | Signed for Liverpool

Not a bad player but not one I'm unhappy to see go to Liverpool.

In keeping with their summer business really. Not terrible but not something that worries me either. I'm judging it this way, if we'd have done the business they've done this summer, I'd have been disappointed with our work.
Of course we would be disappointed. United have title aspirations, whereas Liverpool want to get back in the top four.

They've had a pretty decent summer. If we analyse them individually, Milner is a very good signing on a free and will add much needed experience following Gerrards departure. Firmino is a hot prospect, gives them another creative outlet (which was critical) and offers versatility in the attacking positions; decent replacement for Sterling. Clyne is worth the punt at that price, plus there aren't many better right backs on the market and Gomez is a good prospect for the future and worth the gamble.

As for their failings. I would be disappointed from their perspective with the signing of Bogdan. Mignolet improved towards the end of the season, but is still a liability and Bogdan doesn't have the sufficient quality to push him on. As for Ings, I only see him as a slight improvement on Lambert as a squad player, even though he's more suitable for that position.

So they've done reasonably well, few more additions and they could perhaps challenge for top four. We'll see. Personally, I doubt any club will be able to break the current occupants of the top four, as all our far ahead and I expect them all to have decent enough summers to consolidate their place in the CL spots.

Agree. I think they've had a great transfer window and it will remain being one unless they sell any players. Firmino is good enough to play for the top teams in Europe but his position as a sort of second striker is a bit outdated for the current top teams.

Liverpool will benefit from having a quite unique tactical system which means they can pick up aces like Firmino without the competition of everybody else.

They'd never be able to sign a player of that quality in positions where the other top clubs are also looking to improve.

Currently they've had the issues that if Sturridge is gone they lose all their penetrative runs and they aren't capable of forming a front trio without a major drop in quality and tactical level.

With Sterling out, suddenly they don't have anybody capable of providing width in a comfortable way and their only dribbling player is lost.

Firmino-Sturridge-Coutinho still fulfills the tactical components and is a high quality attack. The same goes for if Sturridge is gone as Firmino can then play as a striker instead which he also does well.

It is a huge signing for them and there is no two ways about it. Their team of last year was quite terrible if any of the front three were injured and there was no way to replace them.

Roy Hodgson prefered Phil Jones (and then even Henderson!) at RB the other day for England rather than Clyne - MOTWYW

I think he's a good signing at a reasonable price. Almost every single signing they made last year was appalling, almost every signing they've made this year has impressed me

Unlike firmino, clyne would walk into the united team. We simply don't have a decent natural right back that will be fit more than 50% of the time... crazy to say that for such a big club

I wish we took a punt on him at that price. Hopefully, we have some better lined up. Or may be Rafael will get one final chance.

Ahh the Liverpool forum is fun reading atm, they have really got their swagger back with this recent clutch of signings.

But reality is it's- Milner for Gerrard, Firmino for Sterling, Clyne for Johnson, Bogdan for Jones, and Ings for Lambert/Balloteli, to me only the Clyne one would be a proper upgrade, Firmino might be but it could go either way, Bogdan maybe too but that hardly counts.

They need alot more yet before they get ahead of where they were last season for me.

It's more because of the change in approach, Ian Ayre has come in for some flak over the years but this time around he is getting deals done quickly - which is a new thing for us, given the targets we have missed out on regularly.
Bogdan is definitely an upgrade on Jones and Clyne the same for Johnson.
I am not really doing like for like on the others, Milner adds some quality and experience and can play in a few positions.
Ings is still young and developing but on the face of it given he scored goals for Burnley there is no reason he won't for us.
Firmino is obviously the one we are more excited about.
Gomez I know nothing about , hopefully one for the future.

Not a sudden change of tune. When he was heavily linked to United, there were pages and pages of people moaning about us going for him.

Fair enough, there are many who saw him as a good buy and I guess many also who did not.

Personally I don't see that many great right back's around and Clyne for us is a very good signing.

Isn't he better of at Southampton; Europa football (like Liverpool), settled at Sot'on, decent English core.
Let's be honest Southampton won't progress further than they have without heavy investment. They will always be the nearly men like Tottenham/Everton. Moving to Liverpool is a logical next step, he may also further his England career at at a top English club, as it does actually make a difference.

I personally liked him and the price is good. I think Liverpool have a good player. I think he is an improvement on Valencia in the right-back position.

I agree, I am hoping that the lack of interest is because somebody else is being lined up.

Lets not pretend you've watched him eh, because if you had, you'd know whatever body else who's watched him knows... Shaw is a very good player who will only get better. You'll also find many United fans on here who didn't want Clyne, and that was when it was us being linked with him before Liverpool had even been mentioned. Not a bad buy for Liverpool- it's an upgrade on Johnson afterall- but definitely a class below the level of player United can and will get.

But let's be honest, who has been consistently better (so please don't say Rafael) than Clyne at right back since Gary Nev?

Yeah but using that logic, you could end up with a ton of "ok" players, not the level of player we should be looking at to compete at the very top.

For instance, 2-3 years ago we could have signed Cabaye/Henderson....just because they were more consistent (and) better than what we had, bar Carrick. But IMO, even though they would have improved us, it's not the level of player to challenge the superpowers.

A bit off topic now, but it's exactly how I feel about the Fellaini signing.

£12.5m is peanuts. surprised we haven't matched that. i can only assume (hope) we have someone else lined up who LVG refers more. please no to Valencia starting again next season.

It may be that Clyne wasn't happy being our second choice behind Alves.

His defensive statistics are heavily bolstered by the fact he plays in a defensively organised Southampton unit with Fonte and Alderweireld having Wanyama and Schneiderlin sitting in front of them.

He also always has a hard working player ahead of him who tracks back and helps.

It'll be very interesting to see what Rodgers asks of him and to see how his personal stats compare next season.

supposing that is the case, then he's an idiot, because Alves is clearly better than him, and it would be stupid to give up CL football because of a quibble like that. however, i just don't think LVG fancies him.

Or the fact he'd be competing with Valencia and maybe even Rafael, and if not Rafael then Jones who even played ahead of him for England recently....so alot of competition for game time...wise choice was Liverpool for me.....

most players would take CL football and a challenge. and geez, if he sees valencia, rafael and jones as a challenge, then the guys has issues.

far more likely we just haven't gone for him.

Oh I think we havent but thats the point even if we did he's not good enough to think he'll be an auto starter over them, quite rightly IMO, he wouldnt be! CL football.....he has Jones ahead of him for England which is a lesser level.

Reminds me of the Lovren signing.....

Clynes pace bails him out of trouble most of the time, I dont really see many other attributes there tbh.

He could be blind with a crooked leg and one working ear, and he'd still be a better RB than Johnson. I'll take anything at this point - Even Brendan as player-manager :wenger:

Not really. You can't really use stats to quantify contribution like that without context.

I appreciate stats don't tell the full story, only some of it. But the way people are banging on about Clyne and then seeing that, well he's obviously not much better than what we have currently

We were too busy chasing Alves. I'd rather have a young English player like Clyne than another player who's not even much better. Clyne and Shaw would've looked good for us and we wouldn't have worried about replacing them for years. Oh well. Lets just buy a talent like Fabinho or Darmian and let them use us as a stepping stone to Real Madrid

Alves is leagues ahead of Clyne.
