Nathaniel Clyne | Signed for Liverpool

I haven't watched a lot of Clyne but when I have watched him I have never seen anything that has made me think he is United standard. What is with these Southampton players having 1 decent season and then suddenly they get this massive reputation for being a great player. If we sign him I hope I am proved wrong but I don't think he is that good I would rather us look elsewhere but it looks like a done deal.

Like who? Only one I can think of that fits this is Lambert after his England call up, but no one really thought he was great except for Brenda Rodgers. The rest of them I feel were fairly rated. Lallana maybe a little overrated but he looked good for Southampton. Clyne has been highly rated since his Crystal Palace days in the championship so its not like he came out of nowhere...we were even linked with him back then.

I like Clyne but I know we can get better players for a cheaper sum around Europe. If it's £15million, then fine.

I had a dream last night that I was having a drink with Louis and he told me we were signing Clyne but to keep it hush hush. Not even Bale or Pogba or someone... I dream about signing Nathaniel fecking Clyne :( It even felt like a bit of an anti-climax during the dream.

People already mentioned that Darmian guy on the last page. Clyne looks pretty average to me, disapointing signing if true. Probably a better option than valencia but if that's the criteria...

Would you buy Rooney if you watched him for England at any time in the last five years?
Maybe not but watching clyne for England I wasn't impressed at all . He must be decent though or we wouldn't be interested .
On the other hand in the same game the Italian full back darmian looked very good . Not sure what sort of season he's had at club level but he did look a player .

Wouldnt be against signing Clyne at all. He's developed into a fine Premier League quality rb. Could've had him for £2m a few years ago though.

£18m is a big rip off. Kroos went to Madrid for £20m in his last year of contract for comparison.

It was his choice not to come TBF. He felt he'd develop more at Southampton

I'd be happy enough with Clyne. He'd be a big improvement on Valencia and I don't think there are many great options out there in that position.

I agree. We need a right back right now and we don't have the stability in the team to make riskier purchases. Clyne would be the safest alternative, he's not young or unproven at 24 but still has the ability to make improvements.

Proven in the league, he already has nearly 100 league caps alone and the only question to his ability would be for the latter stages of the knock-out stages in the CL.

Not a thrilling signing but if true it makes sense.

Shaw?

2011 5 2
2012 5 4
2013 10 6
2014 13 8
2015 2 1

Rooneys goals per season for England in the last five years. 21 in 35. Pretty good by anyones standard.

We are never good dealing with these kind of situations. We paid villa exactly 18 million pounds for ashley young who was in his last year of his contract as well.

Seems like a really good defender. Looks pretty meh going forward. Be nice to have a right back that could actually cross. But what I really want is a young back 5 set up that can grow up together

I don't think he's good enough for a big club, but he might step up a level when he is surrounded by better players, who knows...

Anyway, I don't like it when we target average players, but I don't know what other options do we have and a RB should be our main priority in the summer.

 Embarrassing. Shaw had more than one good season and he is a great player.

He is not a "great" player. Im not saying he isn't good and I think he will be very good in years to come but he is not great yet as you say. The amount we paid for him and the hype around him after last season was over the top IMO. Just as with Clyne he is being overrated.....by the way I rate Shaw much more highly than Clyne.

Shaw is going to be an absolute peach of a player. Will prove a bargain IMO.

Clyne is a sensible addition. We need six signings; one or two can be 'good' but CB, CM, Winger/Striker need to be top draw.

Zabaleta was unremarkable at Clyne's age. Ivanovic too actually. He couldn't get in Chelsea's team for a good while after he signed.

Actually I remember posting that Zabaleta was a good option for Rb when he was around that age at Espanyol, even helped them win the copa del ray in 05/06. In 06/07 he was playing in the uefa cup final. He was also captain of the Argentina under 20s side that won the world youth championships.

At 24 he rejected Juventus to go to City

Just because you didnt know him because he wasnt in the premier league doesnt mean he wasnt a good RB

Both Ivanovic and Zabaleta always had a mentality that Clyne does not. Its not technical skill that brought them to the level of top fullbacks

Clyne would be fine and might be a smart buy given the limited alternatives + other areas we need to strengthen.

He's not a top quality player or even a top quality prospect though, which I guess is why so many are a bit underwhelmed. Still, he'll help shore up a problem position for us so......

It's strange to see so many that shit on Valencia each week making out like Clyne will be a good buy, especially at that price.

For £18 million you should be buying a star player right back, not someone you'd be looking to replace if you want to challenge for champions league finals

Someone will mention Shaw, but thats exactly what the club believe him to be. Someone who will be a top quality fullback we'd never have to replace

I think Valencia has done ok as he has a lot of attributes that help him in speed and strength but his defending at times is still very much that of a forward player. I think Clyne is good and certainly better at defending and I think that is the most important thing right now in having an actual defender be a defender. Maybe Clyne will improve with us and with more international matches he plays. I like Coleman also but I think Clyne is the younger and cheaper option and maybe he will make Shaw feel more at home having an ex Southampton player here with him. Price is high but so were Jones and Smalling both who had a lot less premier league experience than Clyne.

I think it's important to retain a British core, Clyne has had an excellent season and looks a good option, is proven premiership and first choice internationally as well so on an upward curve.

i wouldn't get too held up on reported fees.

On the two occasions I've seen him in the flesh, in the homes games against Southampton last season and this, he's been excellent. Particularly in the first of those games with Shaw as the other full back. They were a key part of Southampton's game plan that day.

Probably paying over the odds at £18m but I think he's quite underrated on here. Capable of doing a good consistent job for us.

I think it'll happen very soon after the end of the season.

I don't think he's all that good defensively, at least not positionally, he often gets caught out and has to hope his pace can bail him out. I also think given the fact we use inverted wingers we need a fullback that can contribute in attack, players like Alves and Evra in their prime, Clyne lacks the control when running with the ball in this aspect IMO.

I'd be very happy with this signing. Always thought he was a good player and thought he should have gone to the world cup.

Saw him quite a bit last season and was very impressed. I remember him having Januzaj & co under wraps when we played them. I think he could improve and go on to be highly regarded. Quote me on it, Redcafe will be full of praise next season if we get him. Opinions will quickly change as usual.
