Nathaniel Clyne | Signed for Liverpool

If we get Cyne, then I believe we have what could realistically be England's back four in the not too distant future. Definitely the two best English full backs, Smalling's form in the 2nd half of this season has been colossal, so it's just up to Jones to step up as well, though Hodgson seems to rate him regardless.

Not that it matters, and I don't really care too much if they play for the national team or not, but it would be good to have a solid English/British core throughout the team.

Would anyone who has seen Clyne play a lot be kind enough to do a quick summary of his strengths and weaknesses? I haven't seen the lad play, but I wouldn't mind a solid RB who is English if he's good enough.

I'm sure other people have seen more of him but from the decent bit I've seen of him he seemed like a good all rounder with a few defensive weaknesses that should (and could) be ironed out of his game. He's a good athlete, solid crosser and not terrible defensively (and could probably improve further in that area). He's a very competent RB who would solidify that position for us.

He isn't particularly outstanding in any sense though. Not massively talented, not excellent going forward and not brilliant defensively. Personally, I'd prefer us to go for someone like Coleman who (while having a fair few flaws himself) is at least a real attacking threat. I think we could do with having an attack minded RB, especially with a player like Shaw on the other side.

Why all the hate? he's a very good RB and a definate improvement on rafa and tony v.

Behind ivanovic and zabaletta he's the best RB in the league IMO. If we get him under £20 million as reports suggest then it's great business for us.

He's already 24 not a 20 years old with loads of room for improvement.I don't think he will progress to be the player we want him to be.Since there're already plenty of fans written off the 1 year younger but much more proven Phil Jones I can already imagine people calling for his head after half a season.

Smalling and Jones have barely improved at all from 20 to 24. If your fully fit you can improve immensely over 2 seasons. He's on their level right now and playing for the best defense in the country.

Smalling has improved a lot this season alone. Both Smalling and Jones are more proven and has shown more in their career in a higher required standard than Nathaniel Clyne.Best defense in the country means jack all.We conceded very few in those matches that we played McNair this season, does it mean he's ready?Especially in a Top club you would like your fullbacks to be good in attack, which I don't think Clyne has enough in him.

Don't get me wrong I think he can be an asset for the squad but I don't think he will improve our XI.

He's played alot this season he was performing briliantly when he first came on the scene just never lasted this long IMO

Ronald Koeman gives Nathaniel Clyne deadline to sign a contract

"We are talking to Clyne and his agent. We can't wait until the end of the season," Koeman told BBC Radio Solent.

"It's not like we need to know today or tomorrow but we are talking to them and we will try to do everything to keep the player but you need both parties for that."

Earlier in the week, Clyne said: "I'm flattered by the interest from the big clubs. It shows that I'm doing well and I've had a good season.

"I'm definitely ambitious. Every player would love to be playing in the Champions League and winning trophies and titles. That's what you play football for - that's the dream.

"I think I need experience playing European football. We're doing well with Southampton and hopefully we can get there.

"That would be great. So I'm just concentrating on Southampton. There are a few more games to play, so I'm just concentrating on getting to the fourth spot."

Why can't they wait until the end of the season? It's not as if they can sign someone before it.

Really ugly from them. Trying to bully him in to a new contract, while he's doing nothing wrong at all really. Obviously he'd like to get a chance at playing in Europe, like every player would.

He's just turned 24 and he just had a great season being part of the best defense in the league by a mile this year. The chances of him repeating this is slim so he's right to want to take the step now.

So basically am I right Hummels at 26 would be our oldest player in the back 5 if we play as below:

---------De Gea
Clyne---Hummels---Smalling----Shaw.

Thats a nice age dynamic for the next 6/7 years.

Aye. With Rojo, Jones and Rafael supporting the whole lineup it looks good with a room for further improvement.

Not seen much of Darmian but I'd take Clyne over Coleman, he's younger with a lot of potential.

A lot of potential could be said for every young player. He just lacks defensive skills, like Valencia earlier. For the price rumoured, i wont complain. But he isnt better than Valencia

Plus it's not like he's super young either. Whatever potential he has would want to kick in relatively sharpish.

Rafael is as good as gone. The earlier you accept it the better. Janko and Valencia to provide support
Van Gaal won't force him to move. They will have an honest talk about a lesser role just like it was presented to Welbeck. If decision is player's then he may choose to stay and try to compete once he's fully fit.

Agreed on Janko and Valencia... especially Janko. Would love see him in the first squad on US Tour in one or maybe two matches.

Rafael has been fit for months and has barely played. It seems obvious that Van Gaal does not rate him. He is good as gone.

Don't know why you think Rafael will be staying over Valencia.
Perhaps because Rafael is a legit RB in the first place and I don't hear any news about him leaving so far.

When I'll do, I might think something about it.

Fit also means physical condition and efficiency not just a damage repair.

So which club he is going to ? If he's good as gone, there must be a deal going on that apparently I don't know about...

He's been fully fit for a while now. We won't force him out but surely if he's not in LVG's plans we're going to be looking for a buyer. He's on a huge salary. My guess is he'll be sold to a smaller team in the PL and he'll have to reduce his wage demands. Lets be honest here man.

I used to rate him hearing how good he was for Southampton this season, but recently after paying more attention to him I haven't been that impressed. For england i actually thought Johnson was playing with him being so wasteful and having little end product? Would love to be proven wrong though.

Why would he stay? He is a competitive guy. I doubt he is going to accept being a backup.

That's a guess, mate... highly educated one but still a guess. Young has huge contract but it all can be sorted it out with finding a suitable role.

You might just answered that question yourself.

Why would he wanted to leave and settle for Everton when he was part of the title winning team, twice if I'm not mistaken...

We can't even begin to compare Young's situation to Rafael's. Young has found a role in the team, even getting in ahead of Di Maria. As far as his contract goes he has stated that he's willing to take a pay cut. As for Rafael it seems to me the boss is totally decided on him, no use for talks.

LVG played McNair as a RB a few times even when Rafael was available and even suggested that he could be our RB for the next ten years on the back of two games, one against lower opposition in the FA cup and the other against a PL team where he was subbed off at halftime. Rafael is so over at OT.

He has not started a match in months. Why would he stay if he is not getting any playing time? McNair has even started over Rafael this season.

McNair is another player who's not a legit RB. When we'll sign Clyne or other one we may start serious discussion about dumping our only RB.

Neither may leave and as such we not buy a RB. They are both capable of doing the job despite the "we urgently need to sign a RB" brigade may say.

Maybe Van gaal and the docs are working with him in order to make him less injury prone and more tactically polished. Or maybe he is out.

That is the thing though Rafael is our only RB yet a RW and a youth team CB are ahead of him in the pecking order. That is a clear sign that Van Gaal does not see a future for him at this club.

Now that's an interesting option... Could cause some forum rage.

It's On.

I find it hard to believe some folks in here are wondering if Raf has a future at Old Trafford.
He is as good as gone.

Unless the club are willing to deal with a PL,CL and domestic cups campaigns with only Valencia, McNair and Janko as RBs we are going to need a new RB.
