Moyes To Succeed Ferguson Anyone?

Of course it does. Globally no one considers Liverpool and Arsenal that big right now, kids on the streets don't usually wear their shirts and their fan base hasn't been growing these last few years. Sponsors also won't pay that much to a club that isn't seen as a winning one.

Arsenal are considered still a massive club in terms of endorsements. They just signed the biggest kit deal in English football yesterday with Puma worth £170m over five years.

Liverpool's main problem is that they are out of the Champions League but still they have had strong deals. It's not necessarily just about the fanbase but they have a strong following still in Asia.

OH NOES!!!! A SEASON OR TWO WITHOUT A TROPHY!!!! The one and only good thing about SAF going is it might finally make some of the more spoiled elements of our support a tad more realistic.

You are right to an extent but what do you consider to be realistic for a club of United's size?

I would say Champions League football yearly whilst a genuine challenge for League.

Someone Spurs decided wasn't right, is right for United. Ok.

Arsenal aren't regarded anywhere near the likes of United, Bayern, Barcelona and Real Madrid, not even close. They never were but in early 2000s it did look like they might establish themselves as the best London club and one of the two best sides in England.

Arsenal are still ahead of Chelsea and City and will remain ahead of them as well even if we don't challenge for the title which was my point.

Yeah, but both are still below Manchester United due to our success recently.

Agreed, I think to expect another 13 titles in 20 years is unrealistic, when you factor in SAF going, and the vast sums of money others are going to be spending, but as long as we are there or there abouts its not too bad.

Imagine how the interview will go....

Interview Panel: "Well David... obviously a big expectation here at Manchester United is to win trophies, and lots of them at that... can you please tell us your experience of winning trophies in the past?"

David Moyes: "Ah... well... I haven't actually won anything in the past... but I've stayed at Everton for a really really long time! And I've been voted their manager of the year every year I've been there"

Panel: "Oh Longevity? That's a nice trait... and you know what they say, first time for everything and all that... but I mean, as long as we go far in Europe we'll be fine, so can you tell us of your prior experience in Europe?"

David: "Erm, well I don't actually have any of note (under breath) bar losing a few pre-qualification matches ahem... but erm, I've sat in the Sky studio on a Wednesday night before! Boy those Jamie's pants are tight aye? Oh, and I've been at Everton a really long time... me and Phil Neville are best mates.

Panel: "Oh we do like Phil.... and never mind aye, so long as we consitently achieve champions league qualification?"

David: ".......I've been at Everton a really long time... and I sold Steven Pienaar to Tottenham for a couple of million and got him back for a bag of skittles and season 4 of Lost."

Panel: "When can you start..."

He's never won anything, never competed in the Champions League properly and has never managed a top club like United.

So to think he is ready to take over at United is based on if you know him or assumption.

No. I am taking into consideration the fact that he will be working under Fergie, who will guiding him, helping him the transfer and tactics. So there.

I really don't think this is going to throw us into doing a Liverpool-job in the early 90s. I think we'll be ok

No. I am taking into consideration the fact that he will be working under Fergie, who will guiding him, helping him the transfer and tactics. So there.

That's an assumption though. Fergie might not want to have anything to do with this side of it.

Why do you see this as a good thing?

For me, it just undermines the manager... if Fergie was going to do this, he might as well stay in the position.

Gill's interview on MUTV doesn't indicate the decision has been made yet and insists the new manager "will have to have experience in England and playing in Europe"

That points towards Mourinho to me over Moyes but who knows.

Moyes has had a few Europa League campaigns

but yes I see what you mean

Not tactics, perhaps. I don't think any director in the world does that.

Maybe, I don't know exactly.

But Fergie will obviously help him with the day to day functioning of the club. And anyway, tactics wise, he is very good, as we have seen in the last couple of seasons. Maybe with better players, he could do a better job?

I don't see the need to rush this appointment as has been stated. We've got all summer.

Manchester United chief executive David Gill, speaking to MUTV: "We have to look forward now and I think any manager coming in will inherit a great squad and great staff around him. It is a dream job. I won't speculate on the announcement but I think we will move relatively quickly.

Maybe. But that's all that - a maybe. Ferguson won CWC with freaking Aberdeen before he came here, beating Real Madrid and Bayern Munich. Now that was something.

OK, seeing as it's not worth a new thread, can we change the name of this one?

Just that this one has been around for months, so people who might have a passing interest in knowing who our new manager actually is may think it is just full of debate about who it should be.
