Mourinho not happy with transfer window - Exclusive interview with Ogden

The financial capability and current status of the squads also matter. We have the need and means to reinforce our squad substantially with 4-6 signings. One can compare to how Citeh are going about it

I expected us to do better than we have done so far this window, and using Griezmann as an excuse is simply being delusional.

Either our scouting and/or negotiation needs to improve going forward, otherwise we will struggle to assemble a squad that can compete with the very best.

Scouting certainly does. We need to get to the players that rise to fame at Dortmund, Monaco and Southampton before these clubs do and aren't willing to sell them anymore. Might be more of a gamble going for these players but at least they won't cost an arm and a leg or aren't for sale at all.

I always heard it was €100m (since he plays for Spanish clubs makes sense his buyout would be in euros) which is £85m. That is around the price we paid for Pogba.
The thing is that that is a bargain in today's market. If they hadn't put that buyout in the contract we would be looking at well in advance of £100m. They will not be happy to sell him for that price. No one knew how the market would explode before the start of the transfer window.

They don't have to be happy to sell him for that price. If it is his buy-out clause than it is his buy-out clause.

Had to really overpay for two players so far where I wonder if Lindelof really strengthens us, wouldnt be any happy either. This is still miles of an elite team, but might be enough for the relative weak topclubs in the PL.

The problem isn't getting them. It's committing to giving them playing time. Mbappe, Auba and co. just didn't drop out of the sky.

If we can't make that commitment, we'll have to keep on bending over at the negotiation table for these players.

My worry is what happens if Lukaku picks up a serious injury in August, say?
Thats pretty much the situation at a host of other clubs imo. If your main striker picks a huge injury you're pretty much fecked because the second choice simply won't be as good thats why he stayed there as second choice otherwise he'd have moved.

I know. It still doesn't mean that getting Griezmann for £90m would be representative of what any other World Class player would go for. They set the buyout clause before this transfer window exploded.

I was saying that £75m for Lukaku is far under what you would pay for a current World Class striker like Lewandowski. I stated that you would have to spend at least £120m for Lewandowski and may have to double that. Neymar's reported transfer supports my point.

There is a hole in many roles

RB + LB (2)

RW/LW (1)

CM (1)

4 players needed

Valencia + darmian ought to be enough at Rb.

At lb depends on Shaw's injury + rating. Same with rojo. Could be a hole though not the biggest.

I Agree cdm + winger required. Though not sure Perisic is a huge improvement frankly.

I don't blame him for being upset. City are getting business done. While we seem to be asleep. Chelsea have had a shocking summer so far yet they are about to sign Morata and that'll be their third signing ,one ahead of us. Jose asked for 4 and gave his list months back. We are back in pre season and still they aren't done. We are the richest club in the world-pull out the finger and stop messing about. A full pre season for new players to settle in etc are very important. We have been dragging our heels a awful lot since Fergie and Gill left. Ed gets big deals done but quiet often it takes too long

It's not a competition for who can buy the most players.
People need to chill out, no point in buying players for the sake of it. Griezmanns U turn obviously set us back, but we've signed someone who will probably go on to be a very good Cb and a proven goalscorer. Bring in one more quality addition and it will have been a good window.

If his list truly had Dier/Matic he is one optimistic motherfecker, I don't rate either that much but even if they both lost their places their clubs will make them unavailable just because it is us who wanted them. The race for CL footie is so tight that no club within the CL equation would dare strengthen a rival even if its for feck you money.
I appreciate the importance of established PL players but competition and the money flying around in the PL make it impossible to get a reasonable deal for a good player.

Good post

Agree, our eyes always seem to be above the scene, we need some eyes in the scene to spot talent early. Maybe have a closer look at the Dortmund, Monaco, Southampton, Scouts. I would add Athletico Madrid to that list.

I know it's not a competition. But if we are going to compete with the likes of Chelsea and city we need to add a few numbers and quality. Chelsea are starting too and city have. And you say it's not a competition but it kind of is. If you look at spurs, would you be happy with their activity this summer if you supported them. Or would you think they are falling behind. Hence the competition. Overall I just think we should be more activity earlier and try not to drag it out like we did with the whole cesc summer and boom we get fellaini.

Maybe Mourinho should have updated his ancient list of players before the transfer window opened while he was vacationing.

Or perhaps he should look at players who are actually available for sale and would move to United. That would probably solve a lot of it.

Considering he went to meet during a international friendly the player we are having more trouble signing, I suspect he might have made enough.

With Lingard, Rashford and Fellaini all being important players in our attack it's pretty obvious that we need serious improvements as none of them are good enough (although Rashford might be some day).

It would be a serious mistake not to do so in this window like.

Curiously enough, we aren't particularly targeting improvements for their positions, are we?

Well Rashford either plays on the left or up front and we've already signed Lukaku and look to be trying to sign Perisic so we're certainly (rightfully) trying to improve on him anyway.

I don't know why Lingard and Fellaini haven't been upgraded on. They both should have been sold in my opinion.

Jose still wanting another player or even 2. Bemoans the fact they are not in USA.

If only Athleti's transfer ban was lifted, offensively we would be up there with the best.

Paraphrase from what Jose just said in his post match presser.

Mourinho just said that he’s not even crying for 2 players. He just wants one as soon as possible.

Clearly a message to Woodward to stop penny pinching.

Yeah clear message to Ed. Really need to get the deal or deals over the line. I know the market is crazy but the importance of a good pre-season under your belt cannot be understated. Pogba was an example of it last season, and hopefully the difference will be seen this season.

I don't even care who it is now, if Jose wants a player, let him have him, stat!

It’s a clear message to woody imo. Don’t expect us to challenge if you don’t strengthen as much as other teams. Good. Hopefully we get things moving before the Real game in under 3 weeks.

He had a fair point but I wish he wouldnt use media against his own colleague and boss!!

Would be grossly negligent in my view.

We have to win PL this year and need the resources to do so

We definitely need to contend for the title.

Been 4 seasons since we've done so. Way too long.

Hopefully the signings Jose wants improve the team. Still don't think Perisic would improve us much nor would Dier/Matic imo, but if they came, hopefully I am wrong.

Wrote in other thread : Lukaku Rashford and Perisic would be fastest front 3 in world football and terrify every defence it played against. Makes sense to me

We still have 4 preseason games before the super cup on 8 Aug. We need at least 2 signings before the end of the preseason, so they can at least play 2 games of the remaining friendlies.

Let's see how it goes. Still have faith Ed will deliver even if he ends up to overpaying to get what Jose wants.

Aye, it'd probably be a good counter attacking trio.

I can see why Mourinho would like Perisic. Hopefully he proves me wrong if we get him.

The only problem I see at this point is lack of depth. Rojo, Ibra, Shaw, and Young are out for months (assuming Ibra intends to return), so we need a couple more players or at least a young player or two to step up in the interim.
