Mourinho | New old Chelsea manager

The crazy thing is, Ramires wasn't even trying to play the ball, he just runs through it without trying to control it and you can clearly see at Götze's reaction that all Ramires wants to do is hurt him. Götze even tries to stop and go in a defensive position, to block what's coming. I don't know if Mourinho saw the video footage before he gave the interviews, but there's really no excuse for his comments.

Luiz acted like a cnut there as well.

Lukaku on loan? What is that all about. This club is great and all promoting the youth an- Oh wait.

Anyone else mighty relieved to get to the end of the window and find Chelsea have done so little? I was fully expecting another absurd tranfer window from them, and instead they've come out of it with the exact same problems. Maybe Jose was right and they really did put all their chips on the potato, so to speak.

They've added Schurrle, De Bruyne, Van Ginkel, Willian and Eto'o.

Their attack is ridiculous.

They've not done a small amount - they did what they had to early and have been reasonably quiet since.

You know, like we used to.

I'm pretty relieved, they've done some decent business but not what I expected.

Around May I fully expected them to get one of the top tier strikers which were 'available' in Cavani/Lewandowski/Falcao

Still having Lampard as one of the best centre mids is a weakness as well, was worried they would add someone there.

They have more problems in central midfield than we, and yet they did everything except improving that part of the team, which will come back chashing them soon as one of Lampard-Ramires end up injured. Lampard will probably have problems with tiredness too.
I don't see Willian as some improvemant in first XI, at least not this year, except in numbers. And don't forget their best player from last season is yet to start game in this season.

We have far better first XI than Chelsea, and our squad is good as always to do good in long run too.

Spending the entire summer pratting on about signing Rooney and then eventually giving up and slipping a semi-retired Eto'o in the door is hardly doing what they had to early.

That's a fair point - as a measure of how much the last 48 hours of football related crap has annoyed me I'd forgotten entirely about the Rooney thing

and re: Eto'o, my understanding is that basically whoever Anzhi were touting Willian to they were trying to chuck in Eto'o for free to get him off the wage bill?

It was an odd transfer window for us, to be fair.

On one hand, we added some quality to our attack: bought Willian and Schurrle and brought De Bruyne back from loan. The attacking midfield was already well stocked, though.

On the other, we haven't bought a defensive midfielder, which I think, we needed to do. Our central midfield is full of question marks. Lampard is 35, Essien is a shadow of his former self after all the injuries, Mikel is decent but never really developed into a player we hoped he'd become and offers nothing going forward. Young Van Ginkel looks very promising, but how soon and how much he can contribute at the top level remains to be seen. Ramires is the only one whose value to the team is apparent and whose place in the lineup is not questioned, but he does have his limitations. I was hoping we could bring either De Rossi or Khedira to improve that area, but it didn't happen.

After yet another poor season from Torres and underwhelming showing from Ba we clearly needed to buy a quality striker. Quest for Rooney came to nothing, Cavani and Falcao were priced out by PSG and Monaco. Lukaku loan was a surprise to me, I think it was a tough decision for Jose, ultimately he decided that another year where he can play more football rather than learning from the bench would help his development better. Since he sees the lad in training, I'd trust it was the right choice at the moment for all parties involved.

Getting Eto'o of four-five years ago I'd be crazy about. That current version is hopefully still good enough to deliver. He is undoubtedly a very talented striker and at 32 can still contribute. Whether he can find motivation to work hard and get back to his best, who knows. Mourinho knows him from his work at Inter, so I guess he's confident he can get him to do well. We'll see.

Yeah, that and missing the penalty that might have added another cup to the resume of your special one, instead it went to Pep again, which must sting even more.

Lukaku should have put in a transfer request and joined Arsenal.

He's set the prem alight with West Brom last season and he's still not getting a chance, right...

And what about Mata? Any news on that front? Wasn't he ready to put in a transfer request at the end?

Mourinho blocked the Ba loan move to Arsenal after he learnt of the Ozil transfer. He wouldn't have sold (or loaned) any of his players to Arsenal. At the end of the day, Wenger is still a good manager and I'm sure Jose doesn't want to strengthen Arsenal by any means.

Where's Rob to tell us how amazing Mourinho is?

They are boring as feck, compared to this they were great to watch under Rafa last season. He only put Torres on to do his usual "look at me, look at me, I take crazy risks as a manager" thing. It didn't work, there was zero cohesion but will he get criticised? Will he hell. He lets Lukaku out on loan and wants rid of Ba, yet ends up with two players who used to be world class some time ago.

Everton ran their bollocks off and tactically were excellent, the change to put Mirallas up top towards the end was inspired by Martinez.

His squad aren't all that.

I also think Mourinho will find it difficult to recapture the hunger he had during his original stint. This isn't the young, hungry, vibrant Mourinho anymore.

This is a much weaker squad than the one mourinho had years ago, yes he's a top manager but this is a different challenge, and one that he isn't used to.

His squad isn't nearly as good as the one he had previously, but I don't think he would have lost any hunger whatsoever. His ego will have seen the 'Special One's triumphant return' headlines the second he signed on for Chelsea.

Jose's players were the culprits in this game, no intensity whatsoever. Everton will take points off the top teams at home this season, they are a vibrant side and are clearly responding to Bobby Martinez. Chelsea were guilty of missing clear chances in the first half, if one or two had been converted I doubt they would have lost to be honest.

Still thinking Hazard flatters to deceive every time I see him.

Has a successful manager (in England) ever gone back to his old club for a 2nd stint & gone on to further success ?

Mourinho took over a very good Chelsea side in 2004. He had unlimited cash to spend, & very little in the way of competition with other big spenders in the transfer market. That's most certainly not the case now. If he can get Chelsea back to where they were when he was last in charge then he'll live up to his 'special one' tag. But that's one massive 'IF' as far as I'm concerned.

Sending Lukaku out on loan was a stupidest thing he could do.

I don't understand Lukaku. Went on and on about how he wanted to choose his next team based on the amount of playing time he'd get and that he didn't want to go out on loan. Then goes to Chelsea, where he's with his idol for one season before being sent out on loan 2 seasons in a row while he sees Torres and Ba staying.

Most players really are stupid.

Anyway, always nice to see the twatty one lose.

Still thinking Hazard flatters to deceive every time I see him.

Not every time, for me. There've been matches for Chelsea (including one this season, though I can't remember which off the top of my head), where he shows another gear entirely, takes the game by the scruff of the neck, and wins it almost single-handedly. The problem is that for every game like that there are three or four where he just seems to float around waiting for opportunities to dribble a bit. He doesn't have Mata's vision, which means the threat of him running at the defence is much more one-dimensional.

Schurrle is working hard to confirm everything I thought about him being too average for a club of Chelsea's ambitions.

I changed my mind, I guess I am a bit pissed over Mourinho's comments.

Quotes by Mourinho after the game:
"There is a passion for football and if you are in love with the game, you don't kill a final with a second yellow card like this,"

"For me, yes, (the player should not have been punished) because there were many other yellow cards during the match which the referee didn't give."

"A good English referee would have stopped the game and told Ramires: 'Look, you've not hurt anyone but you mustn't do that again.' Or tell the Bayern players: 'Don't dive. Don't try and provoke. Play a fair game.'"

Out for a few weeks with a laceration of the capsule. I guess only in Mourinho's mind you could call that, not hurting anyone. Or even better, he'd really tell an injured player who got fouled really hard a few seconds ago, he shouldn't dive and play fair, yeah, that's the way a good referee would handle that situation.

I'm a bit late but that's fecked up! Gotze can tell way in advance that Ramires isn't looking to get the ball.

More in comparison to the competition than anything else. Mourinho took the league by surprise by taking charge of the first modern 'money club', buying a superstar for every position. At the time everyone else was still getting away with distinctly questionable squads. United were in the Djembax2-Kleberson era, for example.

Now, on the other hand, both his title rivals and the rest of the PL clubs know how to compete against these expensively assembled super-squads.
