Hererra is a bit odd. He hasn't got a great range of passing and he can be a bit inconsistent with his weight of pass but he's quite creative and is well capable of a really incisive pass. Mata's first goal against Liverpool being a good example.

I think he'll thrive in a midfield where other players do the fetching and carrying and his job is to do nothing other than create.
Herrera is more an allrounder like Vidal than a proper playmaker who dictates play. If we're going to continue developing into a dominating side with >60% possession regularly, we need at least one "pure" playmaker in the team like Carrick, someone who has the ball "all the time" and dictates our build-up. Herrera isn't that kind of player. Although he is extremly creative, his passing isn't good enough. He prefers risky passes too often and his long balls aren't goot at all. If he was the main playmaker in the team, we'd lose the ball too often and struggle to dominate games. Therefore we can't build our midfield around him. We need to replace Carrick with a great passer of the ball like Fabregas or Schweinsteiger. Also, limiting Herreras role to solely creating wouln't benefit him. His very aggressive playstyle is what makes him a great player instead of a very good player in my opinion.

So much this.

Carrick, Depay, Blind, Young, Fellaini, Jones, Januzaj and Valencia would be decent depth too...

Let's hold the excitement guys! We all remember how we were all going gaga over Firminio signing and thought that was a done deal. I will wait for the confirmed reports before even going close to my zipper! :smirk:

Who went "gaga" over Firmino lol? Reception seemed luke-warm at best to me.

He's an all round midfielder with excellent technical skills. Has a bad pass in him every now and then, but makes up for it in other areas. I actually think he offers a fair bit without the ball and shouldn't be left to just attack. He can't be majorly relied on to defend but in terms of pressing, energy, he has a lot to offer.

Damn it mirror is making me excited saying its a done deal

I need bbc and sky sports to break the news, for now the cage is open but the beast is still asleep.

L'Equipe are pretty reliable for French players according to some. But I won't trust anything unless either manunited.tv or Wall Street Journal publish it.

Has a sense of acceleration in him which always stood out whenever I saw him play. Even in the videos, it is a wee bit evident. Like whenever there is a loose ball to be won or a player to be closed down and/or tackled, he somehow just reaches there with with some quick acceleration.

Also correct me if I am wrong, but I believe it was Schneiderlin who won the ball in midfield and started the counter for the Southampton goal against us at Old Trafford. He was quite good that night.

This just has to happen now. It's the signing we've been waiting on for years. A central midfielder who we all actually think is a good player. Get it done Woodward, build it and we will come.

Exactly. The last time I checked it was like "Firmino, who? Does he play football?" Most people on here didn't even know him I would say.

He's a good player by the sounds of it but it wasn't like everyone here even wanted a player in his position let alone him. Other than one or two games I've only ever really heard about him getting linked to other clubs. Much rather get Schneiderlin in at United myself.

Schneiderlin is also much more what we need if we aren't intend on selling Mata, Di Maria or both.

I spoke to my chap last night who told me that it's on, medical expected on Tuesday. Wasn't straight from the horses mouth, rather something he was told but nevertheless looks like it's all sorted.

Chuffed to bits about this 'cos we need Schneiderlin big time.

Next stop, Schweinsteiger, I hope.

Not quoting but I remember everyone being all happy about the deal and how he will fit into our system like he was already our player.

I remember some muppets being happy we were signing someone, anyone. And perhaps a few of them let the rush go to their heads and got giddy with the usual nonsensical hyperbole that accompanies these things. But most discerning posters were questioning the wisdom in signing a player in the one position we don't need strengthening. Not to mention his pedigree (or lack thereof). Most had never even seen him play.

Schneiderlin on the other hand, is probably the most universally approved signing in recent history. Plenty of 'gaga' to be seen here.

He is just what we need though, he knows the league and was one of the best in the last 2 seasons, he'll fit right in straight away.

Completely agree with you. Waiting desperately for this to get confirmed! There will be euphoria here once that happens

If we get both Schneiderlin and Otamendi, we'll be twice as hard to beat. I dont think anyone would want to play us

Saw Schneiderlin a few times for Southampton last year. Comfortable on the ball, alert and always looking to trigger things. Carrick-esque.

Like Herrera he seems very quick for a central midfielder. While not vital for a central midfielder its a nice attribute to have.

Those two are the players i want us to sign most, enough of these stupid Ramos talks/bids, pay the 35m for Otamendi.

He don't count as Homegrown, does he? He left Starsbourg for Southampton at the age of 19 in june 2008, and he is born in november 2009.

Wow thanks for scouting a first choice Premier League midfielder for us Mike Keegan, how on earth did you get the opportunity to see him play?

Doesn't he play further up for SOTN when Wanyama plays? Like if he comes, isn't he most likely to play 8 with Herrera playing 10?

Southampton normally play with both Schneiderlin and Wanyama sitting fairly deep alongside each other and then a third player in a more advanced role. Imo this is how United will play next season.

And he does count as homegrown to whoever was asking that.
