What? What kind of qualifier do Southampton have? For Europe? Will he be cup tied then or won't it count if it's only the EL he would be involved in with Southampton?
We aren't in EL *unless we feck up qualifications or group stage * even if he were to play he wouldn't be cup tied to CL

If he isnt signed up by Friday I will be very surprised. He's obviously said he wants to leave and it's just about sorting a deal now.

By all accounts it sounds like this one will happen. Perhaps because he's a PL player, and a defensive (ish) midfielder, it is hard to really get too excited, but he's the type that could prove to be a key player for us for years to come.

He wont be a creative force or anything but his presence will give Van Gaal the balance he wants and allow our more creative players more freedom. It's exciting for that alone.

Clasie is more like Blind, a small holding mid who can spray passes and shield a defence. He's one of the best midfielders in our league and will leave Feyenoord, Koeman has always been a fan and tried to get him before. I would find it strange if he doesn't end up at Southampton.

I remember us linked to him and martins indi in a double swoop around may 2014 and at the time read that he was called Dutch Xavi. Seems like ages ago.

Exactly. Last season was pretty horrible but the very occasional chink of hope came with Carrick in midfield, against strong opposition. Spurs and City being the obvious examples. This guy is younger and more aggresive than Carrick but just as composed and intelligent. He could potentially bring us up a level from what we saw when we were at our best last season. Which really is exciting.

Bet he's glad now that Southampton blocked his move last summer otherwise he'd be stuck at the spuds for the foreseeable future.

He would if they qualify.

Rule 18.07 states that if a player features in the first, second or third qualifying rounds of either the Champions League or Europa League, he can play for another club in either competition from the group stages onwards, provided his former employers do not reach the group stages themselves.

If a player is involved in any of the aforementioned qualifying rounds for a side which then goes on to play in the group stages of either UEFA competition, he is not eligible to play for another club in Europe in that season.

We need him for our own CL qualifiers, let alone for the competition itself! But it looks like it will be done quickly anyway.

Sorry for jinxing this lads.

First leg of their qualifiers is on the 30th of July, we'll have sorted out this deal by then. Right? :nervous:
I would hope so. If not the CAF will be in meltdown me with the rest. I'm hoping this week but I have nothing concrete to base that hope on.

Sad Chris wants threadmarks.
How about us adding threadmarks to some of these muppet threads? I just spent an hour and a half updating myself on a semi-fake-official photographer's twitter habits and the secret image preferences of gaz.

I could sum up the latest 500 posts with "Nowt and a couple of good laughs".

I agree with everything you said. The only downside I see is that he doesn't have the passing range of Carrick. Last season not only did we miss Carrick's defensive work but his ability to start a quick attack by switching play with an accurate pass. All our other midfielders are good short passers and Schneiderlin will be the same. Before Carrick we had Scholes who could play this role.

But overall I think he is the best available option for us and ticks most boxes. Hoping it will be a game changing signing for us.

I've not watched that closely but he looked good against us and his stats are very good.

I know that does not mean everything but we need a composed presence in the midfield and I think he will give us some tactical flexibility with playing a more creative third midfielder and still having three ahead of that '10'.

Can't see this happening if he is training as usual. They would want to keep him out to protect his fitness prior to a transfer taking place.

RVP continued training with Arsenal and even played in one of their pre-season games. It doesn't mean anything.

Yep you're right. I'll wait until something happens before presuming something is going to happen then.

He is leaving for sure. That's been confirmed by koeman and Morgan himself. Just a question of where was the doubt. It looks likely that it's us.

So they say, but until it actually happens, its still all speculation.
He said last summer he wants to leave as well didn't he?

Although it does seem very likely that he'll be coming to us. So many reporters are saying it.
