I'll be really annoyed if we miss out on Schneiderlin because we are fannying about trying to get Schweinsteiger.

Schneiderlin should be first choice between the two.

I'd be very annoyed. I'm picturing Carrick and Schweinsteiger sitting in the stands on far too many match days injured while Schneiderlin has another great season. A scenario that is highly likely if we don't do the right thing and prioritize Schneiderlin.

We talking about Schweinsteiger here. It's like turning down Scholes for Carrick. Think about it that way.

What do people think about this potential lineup: Carrick--Schweinsteiger
------------------------------------------------------------Schneiderlin
--------------------------------------------------------Depay-------Di Maria
---------------------------------------------------------------Rooney
Would it be defensive overkill? I know it makes sense to play Herrera at the tip of the trio, perhaps with Mata occupying Depay's position, but I'd fancy seeing this combination used in tough European away games. Few teams would dominate that midfield and Di Maria and Depay add width, pace, creativity, and a solid goal threat; with Rooney up front, perhaps dropping back to the no.10 role every now and then, the front three would be very interchangeable, whilst the midfield three would keep the ball for fun and win it back with ease.

Anyway, I hope we sign Schneiderlin and Schweinsteiger because it would give us the best midfield options this club has had in many years.

I don't like any line up that doesn't feature Herrera.

Yeah, would be very harsh to drop him, excellent player -- has a bit of early Scholes about him. Just the potential squad depth we could have if we sort out a few transfers would be incredible. We're a RB, CB, 2 CMs and a striker (if RVP leaves) away from seriously challenging on all fronts next season.

so more than half a team then considering De Gea is probably going!

But at some stage of Scholes's career - a late one, of course - you would turn him down for Carrick. With Schweinsteiger's age and injuries making him our first choice (or only) signing for that position is wrong.

Valdes will take that spot. But yeah, we're five players away from being a top class side again.

Coleman (£24m), Ramos/Otamendi (£40m/£30m), Schneiderlin (£25m), Schweinsteiger (£15m), Lacazette (£30m). Could probably get the five of them for about £130m.

Miles away then and then another season of transition beckons.....

Agreed. Schweinsteiger's passing is still there, but he is not the same player he was a few seasons ago. Still won't mind him coming here, but Schneiderlin should be the first option for that holding/defensive role.

If Southampton are trying to pressure us into speeding up the transfer, then that would imply Arsenal aren't really pushing strongly for him. If Arsenal aren't really going for him, then who the feck else would be getting him? No one else seems to be in the running, Southampton can't really risk keeping him on after the whole fuss about refusing to transfer him last season, and he's made it clear he wants to stay in the PL and play in the Champions League.

The transfer doesn't seem to be happening as fast as the papers want it to so theyre trying to stir things up and fill pages with nothing.

I don't think its relevant to bring Strootman into this.
He is perennially injured and we don't know how he will play after he returns from injury.
In any case, Strootman probably wont ever play for MUFC, so its not worth talking about.

I think the point is that statistically he was better than Strootman's one good season, where he was hyped up all over this place. Thats why he used the season before last's stats, not last season where Stootman was a sicknote and not impressive when he played.

The only way we'd miss out on him is if he doesn't want to come here over Arsenal or if we don't want him.

I'm very calm and optimistic about this one, I'm fairly sure it'll happen regardless of Schweinsteiger because they offer different strenghts. I find the speculation that we'd miss out on him because of Schweinsteiger laughable tbf.

Arsenal probably won't pay what Southampton want, so they'd much prefer a straightforward quick deal with us like with Shaw.

I don't see why we can't get both, what's the issue?

Schweiny would cost £8 million or something (if reports are true)

Schneiderlain would cost £25 million

so for a combined total of less than £35 million for 2 players we desperatly need, that's literally pennies to United what's the big hold up just get it done ffs and stop messing about.

I think we can. Priority is Schneiderlin though, he is a MUST. If we can also get Schweinsteiger it will give us lovely options in midfield, and allow us to rotate between Herrera/Carrick/Schneid/Schwein/Blind/Fellaini which is a pretty healthy/balanced mix of options.

As mobaco RB in place of Coleman and I agree. Although Gündogan would be a much better option instead of pig farmer if we're buying a German midfielder.

Jason Burt of the Telegraph suggesting that the deal isn't as advanced as other sources indicate and Southampton want us to hurry up.
What a crap article this is. The headline is "Man Utd told to speed up signing of Morgan Schneiderlin - but Van Gaal holding out for Bastian Schweinsteiger" but then it goes on to say "It is unclear whether United would continue to pursue Schweinsteiger should they bring in Schneiderlin" :wenger:

Mirror and Daily Mail both saying that the 25m deal is done. Mirror has said this should be announced by Wednesday.

Think this is done then.

All the right noises coming out recently. Not reading too much into the whole Schweinsteiger priority stuff, think we're genuinely after both.

Mirror now saying its a done deal - announced on Wednesday
Looks as though it's in the bag, Eds made him an offer he couldn't refuse. I was skeptical about him but so far he really has done the business we need.
